Worst case scenario you can look up Victor at allservice. I sent in the CRC1 corrupted EEPROM dump of my TransNote to him and he fixed it and sent it back to me. IIRC it was $30.

Nice. I'm just a PP building time at the moment, flying for pleasure; ASEL with complex and high perf. Getting the instrument rating is next on the list but... the house comes first. :)

What's your favorite set of wings to fly? I personally really enjoy the C210.

I've been using Crucial's drives for the last half-dozen years too and they have all been serving me well. I seek out MLC when it's in my budget, but avoid TLC and Sandforce. I haven't had issues with 3D-NAND so far but my experience with it has been relatively limited. Time shall tell...

Re: Location of backlight fuse on T420

I blew the backlight fuse on my W520 more than once. In my case it was on the underside of the board under the black tape near the DIMM sockets and docking connector - the fuses will be labeled labeled Fxx (e.g. F6) so they should be relatively easy to find. Ohming out across them will help you conf...

Re: A new G40

Actually the G41 uses a mobile CPU, despite it sharing socket 478 with its desktop counterparts. I'm not sure if a desktop CPU will work in it. The fastest it will support is the P4-M HT 3.46, Prescott core. The fastest desktop variant of the socket 478 CPU was a 3.4, in both Prescott and Northwood ...

I'd also considering my FHD IPS modded T420 which is in 9/10 shape for the right price. Rare T420 (non-s) FHD mod, although the sacrifice to having it is the fact that it does glitch.

Re: A new G40

I'm wondering if these machines use the same (known flawed) audio chip/design as the A31/p machines. They are rather infamous (aside from the other well known problem with the GPUs on that model) for failing to provide audio out to the speakers and/or headphones jack after a time. I have a fine G41 ...

Re: Time to crowdfund the real ThinkPad: let's see how badly we want it

I disagree. What do you do with that compact and expensive machine when the RAM fails? How often do you experience RAM failures? CPU can fail too. Very rarely, just like RAM, but it can. Why not put CPU in the socket then? I see RAM failures more or less monthly. I have only ever seen one CPU failu...

Sadly the 14" model is pretty much as-is when it comes to upgradeability. As configured here is pretty much maxed out in terms of available configurations - aside from putting in the 2.33 GHz T7600 CPU, an SSD, and (via the non-whitelisting BIOS) an "N" or "AC" wireless adapter. Sandy Bridge isn't 3rd gen, it's 2nd gen.

If you're interested in Sandy Bridge quad core mobile CPUs for the T520, all of them should work with the latest BIOS.

If you're interested in Ivy Bridge 3rd gen CPUs, then you're going to need to flash Coreboot with a chip flasher.

Re: Just bought a T61, few questions *PICS*

Reprogramming factory timed 800 MHz RAM's timings to work on a 1066 modded system should always be done on an 800 MHz bus system. If there are any issues with stability, they will most likely crop up when running at 1066 with 800 MHz timings, so you don't want to risk bricking the SODIMMs while repr...

Yeah, pretty much. Cut the one trace and solder in a jumper wire from the end of the resistor on the left to the capacitor on the right. There are other parts which add to the complexity but most of it isn't too difficult. The biggest uncertainty is whether your RAM will handle being overclocked; if...

The 1066 mod by itself also requires some hardware modifications, but much less intense than the quad modifications. IIRC it's as simple as a cut trace and a soldered wire, although the underside of my system board didn't perfectly match up to their example photos so I had to be extra careful in mak...

Re: T470 - Is this a good price and configuration?

I may be a bit late now on the price comment but I think it's rather good for the machine; my only real benchmark for the remark is the $1800 pricetag of the TP25 which has twice the ram, the 940MX GPU and a 512G SSD but is pretty much the same otherwise.

If the M50 is in any way prone to the same motherboard faults as the S50, then the capacitors are probably leaky and shot. We had hundreds of S50s deployed at one of our clients and they started dying off due to bad caps. Lots of strange issues ranging from video card artifacting, sound cards dying,...

Re: RAM frequency vs. power consumption for Carolina idiots

Ray is probably the best one to answer this one, maybe he'll chime in. My thought is that for a given voltage you'll see more power draw and heat on the higher clock speeds, in much the same way you see that with CPU frequencies. It's probably negligible with RAM, but it's true... I've never seen it...
