Re: FREE + shipping: T400 and T410, 760XD (for parts)

Another brief update: New IRS regulations affecting electronic transactions are in effect. Payment via certified/personal checks and shipping to US addresses ONLY. In reciprocity for my more stringent sale terms, I just want the parts units gone. They are now free - just cover shipping and insurance...

I think RBS is right that the HDD password can be removed from BIOS. If not, swapping out the HDD should get rid of it as well.

Re: Which CPUs?

Remember a couple things. First, every CPU die is different and results will vary. Some CPUs easily overclock well as yours has; others may not. Second, you also are overclocking your RAM. Just like CPUs, some memory will handle it well and some won't. This is why reflashing the memory SPD to increa...

If you use a factory recovery it should activate automatically. Otherwise you can pull the OEM key from BIOS using this command from an admin command prompt or powershell terminal: wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey You can activate with that key as previously described. If nobody else bites before you need a commitment I will take the lot. With eBay you always run the risk that it could be counterfeit but it's about the right price to be what it says it is, in terms of DDR2 4GB SODIMMs. About $100 USD/pair is considered the average going rate. DDR2 is very old now and by the time the industry was capable of manufacturing the 4GB SODIM...

Re: Which CPUs?

Yes and no.

They will work with the 1066 FSB mod, but not otherwise. The 800 MHz FSB CPUs are all that will work without the mod - up to the T9500 and X9000. The Middleton BIOS will eliminate the thermal sensing error at POST that Penryn CPUs throw, if you have an early Merom board.

There isn't one.

By 3rd gen i Series Lenovo had completely abandoned 16:10 aspect screens and at that, the highest resolution available for 16:9 was 1920x1080.

Update.

I'm selling the T400s and T410s as a pair now. Buy one and get the other for free, more or less.

I've added a fully-functional T410 to the list as well and dropped the price of the 760XD parts machine.

If you upgraded to 10 from 7 using the factory recovery media, chances are the default Lenovo power profile was more conservative than the one MS defines by default in their generic Windows installer. Lenovo usually sets the CPU control to "adaptive" where it clocks down unless it's being worked har...

First thing I'd do is connect an external monitor to see what it does. Doing so wouldn't necessarily rule out the GPU entirely, but it does confirm whether it works fine with the 2nd output or not. They made a 9 cell "slice" battery (28++) for the T and W 10/20/30 series, but I don't think there's an equivalent that works with the xx40 series.

Yes, with a Middleton BIOS the T9500 will be plug-and-play. No need to update the image for a new CPU.

I have a T9900 in mine; it rarely gets into the 70s at full power. Have you considered the 1066 FSB mod? It's actually quite easy IMHO if you aren't concerned about enabling quad cores.

Re: Is it possible for a T60 battery to swell?

The swelling tends to occur, IME, mostly in batteries with the flat Li-po type cells which are made for today's thin-and-light laptops. They are sealed such that any gases that are released as a result of cell degradation are trapped inside the thermally protective foil wrapping the cell is encapsul...

Re: Chromebook recovery utility cut the disc into small pieces

This is typical, Chrome recovery sets up many partitions on the removable disk like that. To boot the recovery stick on a Chromebook you will need to reset it forcibly - press and hold the power button, esc and the reboot key (the one that is an arrow in a circle, usually 3 or 4 from the top left). ...

I don't suppose I fully qualify, but maybe partially? I use a W520 at least twice daily - for about 30 minutes in the morning and 30-60 minutes in the evening. It's the direct replacement I got after I retired my T61p, which I bought new in late 2007, in 2015. I had previously bought a T420 in an at...

I don't recall the T420 having a removable touchpad like the X220s do. If you're referring to the textured part of the touchpad, it's just a sticker. It will work just fine without the sticker.

I found the factory FHD in my W520 to be a little awkward to adjust to, being a high gamut panel. I don't recall it being a terrible panel, but it's not as good as an IP panel. Having been spoiled by nice IPS and AFFS panels prior I opted to retrofit in an IPS display.

I do recall another user telling me that they managed to get this to work by copying all the recovery files from subsequent disks to the respective folder on the USB drive after making it a bootable version of disk 1. I don't recall if they had to edit any metadata files, but I believe it can be done.
