Re: What Thinkpad Yoga do I consider?

I have had a quick look at a Yoga 370 which is a 2017 model with a 13.3 inch screen. Apart from the Windows 10 it didn't look too bad. It seemed reasonably powered with a nice screen. It had 8 GB of ram which personally I think is plenty and it has removable ram but only 1 slot. 2018 models have sol...

Re: How many ThinkPads is too many?!

I do like my Dell 7440 which is FHD and has an 'ok' keyboard and is otherwise a neat machine... What are the pointing sticks like and how do they compare to a Trackpoint? From pictures the pointing stick keys are flat. I like many here solely use the Trackpoint and the keyboard in general keeps me ...

Precisely how I feel although my latest is an X220 of which I have two to cover any hardware failures.

I suppose there are some good Thinkpads which are newer but they just don't do it for me.

Nice!

I have seen many T6X and T4X machines that have basically only sat on desks and these normally scrub up well.

Newer more mobile hardware that are thinner and lighter tend to get more cosmetic damage especially if they have been hauled around in shoulder bags.

"HEAVY" for a laptop on your lap is all relative. Once you have used something relatively light a T60 could feel heavy.

Re: Unusually high CPU and RAM usage

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you're having an issue where Windows 10 is having an issue with a driver after the Update. Or maybe it could be a microcode update that MS have pushed out. Many Tech sites are advising users to defer updates at this time until MS gets its act together but that ma...

Re: Can I put this wifi AC to T61:Intel 7260NGW AN ?

Go for the 7260-AC as RBS suggested because the T61 will limit your speeds more than that Intel card.

The 2014 dated card will be fine in a Thinkpad made in 2007.

If you have a few devices that you want to isolate maybe you could think about using another WIFI router as a repeater. I have seen WIFI routers go cheap at weekend markets. I suppose this depends on whether the existing router is an AC router.

If you go to Computer management and then Disk management you should be able to see the SSD. You can format or partition it then if that is your intention.

Re: Wireless USB and Turbo Memory?

I wondered if "Turbo Memory" was an attempt to deflect emphasis away from Intel ME on boot times and this was more relevant for HDs.

Yes keeping your system lean and removing any driver or program feature that is not required is the better option.

An X61 would probably be great for what he is looking for. Retro with 4x3 screen and no nasty trackpad and with enough performance that it is usable today with your OS of choice.

Also can be found with the IBM logo on the palmrest and has a great keyboard.

Actually I think he has a X201 but he is using extreme methods to prolong battery life and I don't think he is doing anything graphically intensive. Extreme methods are probably throttling the CPU to maybe 30% , decreasing screen brightness and switching off WIFI if you are not on the internet. Your...

For my X61 with T7500 CPU my setting for SuperLFM 6.0 x is .850 v and I am running RMClock v2.35.

On idle the CPU will hit .850 v .

I use the Intel WIFI 5300 and my palmrest gets only slightly warm.

I have a couple of T43's and I agree with RBS that "Samsung HM160HC" drives are hard to beat.

Also if you aren't using the Ultrabay consider getting a PATA to SATA caddy and installing a cheap SATA HD. This is also a great way to install dual operating systems.

Yes it's certainly looking that way but I don't think it should alter your usage of the dual core. The dual core only has 2 threads so in theory the threat from spectre shoul...

SSDs need TRIM and this is problematic with XP. The T43 would be happier with Windows 7 but you need 2GB of ram which is not expensive now.

Re: T43 with SSD has slowed down

A system image backup is always handy in this situation.

Knowing your OS would help and I assume you don't have a spinning drive in your ultrabay.

64 GB is not a lot for an OS like Win 7 if that is what you have and it might be lacking free space which SSDs tend to need.

Re: What are the pitfalls of an X301?

If you need a battery to last longer than 2 hours a X301 is problematic. The TN panel isn't great and to replace it with something better would be expensive. The 1.8 inch drives can be adapted to use msata with 1.8 mini sata adapter On top of this for today they only have enough CPU power to do gene...
