I have a couple of T43's and I agree with RBS that "Samsung HM160HC" drives are hard to beat.
Also if you aren't using the Ultrabay consider getting a PATA to SATA caddy and installing a cheap SATA HD. This is also a great way to install dual operating systems.

Re: Spectre v2
Yes it's certainly looking that way but I don't think it should alter your usage of the dual core. I would have liked them offered but I am not sure of the difference it would make to security or the performance limitations. The dual core only has 2 threads so in theory the threat from spectre shoul...

Re: David Hill plans to show his personal T25 shortly
Lenovo uses reddit for promotional activities so this shouldn't surprise really. The "real" David Hill may find reddit hard work. LOL Edit I notice Lenovo insiders are rallying around him and is the below comment something that David hill would say? Not sure how to prove who I am. Do you need the Ri...

Re: 'Kernel memory leaking' Intel processor design flaw forces Linux, Windows redesign
I think the browser updates are probably the most important followed by OS updates and then BIOS or Microcode updates . Keep in mind that the success of these updates may not be 100% effective against the exploits without extensive CPU design. It will be interesting to see if there are any attacks u...

Re: T43 with SSD has slowed down
SSDs need TRIM and this is problematic with XP. The T43 would be happier with Windows 7 but you need 2GB of ram which is not expensive now.

Re: T43 with SSD has slowed down
A system image backup is always handy in this situation.
Knowing your OS would help and I assume you don't have a spinning drive in your ultrabay.
64 GB is not a lot for an OS like Win 7 if that is what you have and it might be lacking free space which SSDs tend to need.

Make sure you have the Security Updates for March installed if you are running Windows 7. It seems a security researcher discovered Microsoft botched the earlier 2018 patches. https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/microsoft-meltdown-patch-broke-windows-seven-server/ Can we trust Microsoft? Re: What are the pitfalls of an X301?
If you need a battery to last longer than 2 hours a X301 is problematic. The TN panel isn't great and to replace it with something better would be expensive. The 1.8 inch drives can be adapted to use msata with 1.8 mini sata adapter On top of this for today they only have enough CPU power to do gene...

Sounds like this is caused by a MS tactic to encourage people to go to W10. How much would MS love to extinguish W7 new installs.

I was there last year in April and walked around Akihabara which is on the JR Yamanote circle Line. I walked through many shops but didn't see any older Thinkpads. Re: X201 Water Spill, Boot now takes minutes
The I core series bios of the X201 had a significantly different bios compared to the X200 and I haven't heard of too many problems with the dual core systems bios. Lenovo released a Security Advisory last year and there was a firmware update and the X201 was affected. I am not sure how long you hav...

Re: X201 Water Spill, Boot now takes minutes
Could be a hardware problem? Most certainly yes it could. Your X201 appears to be waiting for something or is bogged down by something or yes it is a hardware fault. It can be difficult to diagnose and if it is a mobo problem you may have to live with it. The X201 series are known to have Intel ME ...

When something odd is happening especially regarding the Embedded Controller it is prudent to give it a reset.
Remove mains and the battery then hold the power button for 30 seconds. If you have threshold charging activated you might need to start this after the restart.

Re: T420 Running Hot?
This begs me to ask the question: but doesn't Windows have a "overheating" notification? Shouldn't it notify you at 85*C, and automatically shut down at 95*C or so to prevent damage? Really this should be done in BIOS as not everyone runs Windows. For the X220 there is a advanced Bios which seems t...

Re: X61 overheating
Obviously this X61 is clogged and needs a thermal repaste of the CPU and undoubtedly that is the problem here. But with the heatsink and fan refurbished it is still likely to run warm especially if used on your lap. This is probably to be expected of a 10 year old ultraportable though especially one...

Depending on your usage it might pay to throttle the CPU. That will always be a hot X61 I think.

The bios update is written on a eprom chip on the motherboard and is separate from the HD
If you put the original HD back in there shouldn't be any problem.
As a side thought the WD drive is a PATA drive and outside the T43 it is probably redundant now.
