Re: Remote security exploit in all 2008+ Intel platforms

The T400 is not listed so you can assume it is not affected by the " Remote security exploit ".

Make sure AMT is disabled in your BIOS regardless and any software to AMT is removed.

I don't use linux but from my experience you will find WIFI tethering on a smart phone with newer hardware is more efficient.

Re: WD Red for data drive in Thinkpad?

Probably not ideal depending on how mobile the system was that it's going into. Alternately the WD Blue has Secure Park and has low power consumption.
Lenovo state that Active Protection System doesn't work on non-primary drives.

A well delivered droplet of oil can aid a noisy fan bearing. But I would say if you have a noisy bearing or a fan not running smoothly then it is time to replace the fan at the next opportunity. YMMV

A lot of these so called security features actually install a backdoor to your OS. Intel AMT was recently found to be a backdoor.

For XP I used Norton Ghost 2003 which was basic but just worked. I made up a boot usb and the 1 MB program was activated through DOS. It actually fitted on to a HD 3.5 floppy.

It's been a while since I used RMclock but I don't think you need to actually install the program.

Just copy to your Programs Files folder into a folder named RMclock and then run rmclock.exe from there.

My old Thinkcentre with Posready 2009 I installed it manually because it hasn't been switched on much lately. It is nice to keep any ransomware out of the network.

I wonder how many businesses are still running XP?

Plenty I am sure

I would keep it safe and simple and just get an SSD for the HD slot. If you had a T420 and wanted 2 HD's then maybe you have more options.

Re: Windows 10 driver for for WiFi card

You will find the driver installed for Windows 10 probably won't be limiting your connection speeds. Your connection speed of 144Mbps sounds about right to me but the speed depends on your router and internet connection. To improve on this you will need probably a better WIFI card, upgraded router a...

Flashing a Bios contains a risk element. With the warning I wouldn't proceed with the flash. I have flashed all my Thinkpads and I have never had warnings about mismatches.

Re: How Can I Tell If T400 is in "Dual Channel Mode"?

My situation maybe attributed to my chipset even though I obviously have a 2 GB and a 1 GB module that work well together. Always you should try to obtain identical ram at your highest allowable speed. You already have 4 GB of ram and if I was you I would look at other ways of optimising your system...

Re: How Can I Tell If T400 is in "Dual Channel Mode"?

My X61 running Windows 7 32 bit has 3 GB of memory and CPUZ also says "Channels# Dual".

Besides this it tells me " DC Mode Symmetric"

It seems ram speed is more important than size for dual channel support.

Re: WSUS Offline Update - selecting updates by group?

Yes users of Windows 7 are in the "Extended Support Stage" but Microsoft is still labeling update packages as "Improvements and Fixes". Maybe these "Improvements" are for Microsoft like adding Telemetry monitoring and spying for Windows Explorer. I would argue that MS can't be trusted and what they ...

Referring to Windows 7 updates "blurred" is apt also "murky" comes to mind.

In what we have witnessed with the release of Windows 10 it is difficult to believe that Microsoft has intentions of greatly improving Windows 7 today and into the future.

Re: IBM Thinkpad T42 windows 98 temp measuring and heatsink upgrade

The T42 runs reasonably cool with that stock heatsink. I wouldn't bother with the long heatsink. I ran TPFanControl by troubadix on my T42 with XP but if you have applied new thermal paste and cleaned the fan you probably don't need it on Windows 98. There is also IBM_ECW but I haven't used it Googl...

Yes nice review Paul and good observations as coming from a X61 I find the X1C3 and interesting machine but I don't use touchpads and I like the 7 row keyboard with the extra indicator lights. The chicklet style buttons seem good by all reports but the massive touchpad just gets in the way IMO. Sigh...
