Re: Libreboot on a ThinkPad T60 with ATI Graphics?

It is theoretically possible, however no one has reverse engineered the ATI VGABIOS, whereas they have for the Intel VGABIOS (or it was open to begin with; not sure which).

Re: What OS to Choose

I think GNU/Linux is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but you have to get fed up enough with Windows/Microsoft antics to motivate you enough to get out of your comfort zone, and try something different. The other thing, is understanding what Free/Libre and Open Source Software is really all ab...

Re: Ultimate Libreboot Classic ThinkPad (15" T60)

I am no expert in Libre boot but is the T61 also supported? No, only the T60 and a few other models I listed. The R60 frankenpad is much more complex with serious frame modding involved, it's doable, but not for everyone, I for myself will not try it. Sounds like I need to search the forums here lo...

Re: Ultimate Libreboot Classic ThinkPad (15" T60)

Thanks for all the great info! :) I had to double check https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T60, but according to that there are only 14.1 and 15.0" screens, so I am assuming when you said 15.1" that was just a typo. And so, if the boards are the exact same, I should already have the needed inte...

Ultimate Libreboot Classic ThinkPad (15" T60)

Background and Justification I have been lurking and reading on and off here for many years. I love the community and people here, I always felt a certain kindred spirit in our shared love of ThinkPads (especially the classic ones). I have also been collecting hardware and little tidbits of informa...

Re: Signs of a bad inverter of CCFL?

I love my T60s (I am typing this on my daily driver right now, and I still collect them for spares) but they are pretty inefficient (power wise) by today's standards (20-40W running all the time!). Plus that seems like a waste of a good backlight/display and keyboard to me. :) So why not instead pur...

ran Debian+XFCE perfectly. May I direct your attention to Libreboot? https://libreboot.org/ It is a fully libre bios that is 100% compatible with your hardware, and loads grub as its payload. If you are already comfortable with Linux and GRUB it would be a fun project. +1 for freedom, also GNU/Linu...

I also agree with most of what's been said, especially that modern web is a hog. I keep looking out for and trying alternative browsers, but I keep coming back to Firefox. Mostly because of the plug ins. I personally run NoScript and RequestPolicy (among others), but this is going to be too confusin...

I realize this is a few months old, but I'm posting for posterity (this came up in my suggestions at the bottom, which is how I found it). In fact, I run it on all my T60s (some are 32-bit and some 64-bit) because that way if system crashes, hard drive fails, etc. I ...

I drive a lot for work and listen to some Linux podcasts (among others) to pass the time. All of the below only apply to "Classic" ThinkPads (which, IMHO end with T/X60s that still say IBM on them, could be debated to extend to 520s, etc. depending on your personal criteria): GNU/Linux support Libreboot support 5:4 IPS screen Hardware Maintenance Manual / availability of parts / modular ...

That's sort of what I was thinking, too. But glad to have it confirmed by someone more knowledgeable. I guess what was throwing me off was the fact that not one, but b...

No, it's Intel graphics. But I recall reading somewhere that if you use the 65W instead of the 95W, that your CPU will automatically be throttled, or something to that effect? Is that true? Also, I was hoping one of you gurus would see something in that report I posted that might help me with my pow...

Does that machine boot on battery alone, if you remove HD, CD and any other attachments? Anker batteries on average have a good reputation, so it could also be your motherboard. T60 won't run on battery

I just bought my first t60, been wanting one for a while. Yay! It didn't come with a battery though, but many don't, so I didn't think much of it at the time. I opened my R51 this morning to a missing nipple mouse. No idea where it went. Looking for a replacement, but before that even I have a more immediate issue. The touch pad (which I never use) is not working very well. It only works maybe half or less of the time. If I touch it very lightly, it seems...

Wow, thanks for super fast responses guys. Yeah, my "ISP" in this case is my 4G mobile hotspot on my Android phone. Carrier is MetroPCS.
