Re: [Idea] Intel NUC boards in Thinkpads?

Ever since they pulled their IME nonsense, Intel (well, all of x86, really, as AMD have their equivalent, too) have been dead to me! :D I am mostly now interested in ARM (currently) and perhaps in future RISC-V or even POWER arch. A few posts up you can find a link I posted to Armbian Supported Devi...

Re: [Idea] Intel NUC boards in Thinkpads?

I had come across this back in early February (according to my notes) and it reminded me of this thread, so I thought I would re-post it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/diyelectronics/comments/kfgpn8/lockdown_laptop_build/ There may also be some technical bits in there worth studying? Re: My 6 weeks of trying Linux Distibutions

Yes but who made it a hassle? Stop and really think about that for a moment. In my view, the vendors who will happily take your money in exchange for a piece of hardware, while in many cases not so much as releasing proper documentation, much less F/LOSS drivers, are the guilty party. And Debian sim...

Re: Requesting Help Finding Modern Linux Distros for T60

Eventually you will probably write an installer to a USB stick. The Debian installer can also be used as a Live CD, which is very handy some times. I keep one on my keychain in fact! Almost anything you need to know can be found with a brief Internet search. If not, there is always IRC. Try #debian ...

Re: Booting T60 from USB

I realized something through the course of this thread. I have been exclusively using F/LOSS for a few years now, and for me this criteria is always a given. Therefore I don't think I ever did explicitly state it. I guess it is easy for me to forget, here in my little F/LOSS bubble, that there is a ...

Re: Booting T60 from USB

Success! Well, in the "short term goal" anyway... :D Sweater Fish, Your comments about GRUB got me looking into Debian. In the time I have been using it (which is only a few years) I cannot say I ever recall seeing it in any GRUB menu (even advanced one). So I can speculate that maybe this ...

Re: Booting T60 from USB

I do not disagree with your over-arching point. However, having a multi-boot USB stick, as compared to a single use tool, are most certainly not "functionally the same." This thread has always been about that larger goal, as I said Memtest86+ is just the current, proximate cause (or "short-term" goa...

Re: Booting T60 from USB

Thanks for the reply, Sweater Fish Deluxe. I appreciate the help. You can make a FreeDOS boot drive easily with UNetbootin (or Rufus). [...] Like I said last time, you could also just make the USB drive Grub4DOS bootable and then set up a menu entry for FreeDOS. It just seems wasteful to me to use a...

Re: Requesting Help Finding Modern Linux Distros for T60

Any thoughts on what I'll need to keep on hand for my Intel wifi cards on my T430 or X230i, before going all in? This post must have been made after the discussion in the other thread. So I know you probably know this by now already. But I write it also for the benefit of posterity. Just have an Et...

Re: My 6 weeks of trying Linux Distibutions

I have noticed this apparently widespread misconception (by no means limited to this thread) that certain hardware does not work on Debian, when the reality is (as pointed out above) it is simply a matter of enabling the non-free (and/or contrib) repos in apt sources. Now is this a (very minor) hass...

Some times we have to make small sacrifices for Freedom. Personally, I am pretty staunch on exclusively purchasing hardware that can run with free / open drivers. Re: Booting T60 from USB

Well, I decided to try the approach of using a live boot tool. I saw that Ultimate Boot CD includes Memtest86+ so I decided to give it a try. It even had a release as recently as August of last year which made me think it was still actively being maintained. I have learned since then that this does ...

Re: T530 blob free wifi recommendations

I am a T60 guy, so cannot speak specifically to T530, but on GNU/Linux that shouldn't matter in this context. There are only a small number of Wi-Fi chips that will run without proprietary drivers. And they are (as I recall) mostly Atheros based. One good place to look for blob free wifi hardware , ...

Re: Help on Virtual machines VMs on a Thinkpad

Yes indeed, it is just BSD under the hood. Which makes it only all the more obnoxious, IMO. But that is one of main reasons I am more of a "Free Software" than an " Open Source " guy, as that sort of stuff simply doesn't fly with the former. I don't think the advice RBS gave is crazy at all, if you ...

Group buy for LED backlights on German ThinkPad Forum (joker4791)

atagunov originally informed me of this guy (joker4791) on the German ThinkPad forums who apparently organizes group buys on LED backlight kits. Thanks for sharing your experience. Maybe I am weird, but I never did the "distro hopping" thing, which seems to me like some right of passage for so many others coming into GNU/Linux. (Multi-) Booting T60 from USB (using exclusively F/LOSS)

I first ran into this when trying to update my BIOS recently. At that time, I ended up just burning Lenovo's Update software to a CD (which did work) because that seemed to be the conventional wisdom, and I could not figure out any other way at that time. But even then, I couldn't help but think the...

XFCE is a very good Desktop Environment - lightweight, yet not lacking anything at the same time.

As someone pointed out, most distros really are the same under the hood. Main difference is in philosophy, in particular how strictly they adhere to Free Software ideals.
