Re: Is it possible to read 5.25" floppy discs with a 770?

I do this all the time via INTERLNK/INTERSVR. I can hook up to my 5160 or 5170 and use those drives on my ThinkPad.

Re: New 701C owner, Questions, insight and opinions?

Makes me wonder what those floppy/cable assemblies are worth, as I recently came across several of them. I still have my 701s, though from what I remember, they had corrosion issues, and I really need a battery to rebuild so I can use it off AC.

Re: 701C replacement batteries

Absolutely, ask any questions you wish. I personally don't like the rounded corner 755C(x) packs, because 98% of the time, they've leaked. Like REALLY BAD! NiMH packs for the 760 series seem to be in a lot better shape. Some 755CX, CD, CV and CDV systems have an extra terminal for a Lithium Ion batt...

Re: 750C HDD doesn't spin up

I hope you're using a spot welder and rebuilding the battery pack exactly how it was before. Once you get that working, you'll have no problems updating the BIOS. Just make sure you fully charge and discharge the battery once or twice before you really start using it!

Re: 701C replacement batteries

I'm kinda cringing, because you really should have used a spot welder, though both battery ends need to be flat. I guess it at least works, but I'd still be leery of your method. Though I have noticed some of the battery circuitry is spotty; I built a 760 LiIon battery, and mysteriously, 4 of my ce...

Legacy ThinkPad Battery rebuilding

Wondering if any would be interested in purchasing rebuilt batteries. So far, batteries I have successfully rebuilt - 755, 755CE, 760, 560 and 600 primary. The 355/360 is the same as the 755, but without the intelligent circuitry. Unfortunately, the most expensive are the 360 and 755, because the co...

Re: Bill Morrow collection

Ugh. I was interested in the no power 755CDV, until I saw the price. Technically, I already have one. Combined the LCD from a non-working CV with parts from 2 CD's. I also have the non-existant 755CDX (800x600 on a 755CD). Given it's a no-power machine, is the price negotiable in the future? **EDIT*...

Re: Replace 755CSE LCD with 755C LCD?

If you really want to have fun, find yourself one of those rare/elusive 755CX SVGA screens. I replaced the system board on a dead 755CD I got on ebay recently; in the process, I also swapped LCDs with a SVGA from an also dead 755CX. The LCD has some vinegar syndrome, but for 800x600, I can live with...

Re: mysterious battery on 755, 770, etc

The NiCAD battery y'all are describing is the standby battery. It ONLY handles keeping the memory state intact when you suspend so you can swap main batteries. It has NOTHING to do with 161/163/CMOS. That's handled by the VL2020. Yes, it is rechargeable. No, you cannot use a CR2025/2032 (unless you ...

Re: 750C HDD doesn't spin up

Based on what's going on, I'd say the system board is bad. It sucks, since your other board doesn't put out video. I know it might not be an option, but there is a PCMCIA boot, where you can use a compact flash card as your boot up device. I don't remember if this is limited to 512MB or not, since y...

Re: Is Thinkpad 600X limited at UDMA2 33MB/sec?

I'm using a SiliconDrive 8GB in my 600X and it seems to respond faster than a mechanical hard drive of the era. No, I was never expecting even low end SATA SSD speeds, but it works. I ordered a 64GB Sandisk Extreme Compact Flash, so I'll have to update on whether that's any faster. I got a bigger dr...

I thought all ThinkPads are center negative? Now You're going to make me look at my bricks. And I could be wrong, but AFAIK, the ThinkPad 510CS should work with the same PSU as a 701C/CS. I check next time I'm in my attic, where my 510CS is.

Let me know if you still need a keyboard. I accidentally dropped one of 2 365's I was going to refurb and load on ebay. The keyboard appears to be intact, but the rear left hinge sure isn't. I know both systems do power up though.

Did you rebuild your primary battery? I regret tossing my leaked NiMH batteries over a decade ago, as I still have a 701C and CS, though both are stored away. Yes. I used 20 AWG wire to solder standard AA NiMH Eneloop cells together. Macgyvered a stand for said cells to hold them in place during so...

Re: 380XD: Bios Update w/o Battery (Help)

I've never owned a 380XD, but I'm curious myself now how hard it is to rebuild the battery. That's how I've updated all my 755s, 760s and 600s - by rebuilding the battery (or acquiring one to rebuild, if need be).

Re: How do I upgrade the BIOS to 1.44 on a 755CE with a dead battery?

That's for a 600. Totally different platform than any of the 755 machines. Though I can't comment on the battery-less updates, as I just updated 2 600E machines (2645-4AU) yesterday using rebuilt batteries (one used cells I got from an X61 pack, the other had its original cells that took a charge up...

The layouts of the circuit boards surrounding the screen are different... check it out, I took them both apart: https://imgur.com/a/caXndfO I'm probably going to return the 755c screen anyway. Some of the ribbon cables surrounding the screen were broken so even if I was able to get it hooked up rig...

Re: TP760: Li-Ion battery dead - can I put NiMH cells inside?

By the way, that 760XD Li-Ion battery is now still alive, but only used to keep the CMOS clock etc working. I charge it about 3 times per year (LCD usually starts at 0%, takes about 3 hours to 100%). I use the 760XD mainly to run an eprommer at the parallel part. The TFT has developed about 100 col...

No, you cannot. Just replace the 17500 cells with new Panasonic cells. To use NiMH, you'd need to source an NiMH pack, which uses a Sanyo HR-AUL, or any other 4/5A NiMH.

I think I need to write my own FAQ, but you should NEVER solder directly to a battery. That's why you buy a spot welder. You can get a Chinese one for under $200, and it's much safer than soldering to cells.

Consider it business audio. It's a crappy card intended to play wav and midi files in Windows or OS/2. In fact, I'm almost positive business audio was an actual term back in the 90s. You figure the "average" businessperson then didn't need to play games (in quotes, because who knows how true that wa...

Re: How do I upgrade the BIOS to 1.44 on a 755CE with a dead battery?

I'd be very careful hooking up power to the DC-DC board, attempting to fool the computer into thinking there's a battery. And as others have mentioned, there are other pins for outputting other data.

I've updated my 755CEs (that weren't updated) using a rebuilt battery, but that's another story.
