Hi Firstly looking at the last entries in the tlp_stat output i'd say the thresholds have not been set, /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/start_charge_thresh = 3 [%] <<<<< /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/stop_charge_thresh = 100 [%] <<<<< /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/force_discharge = 0 try the ...

Re: Optimizations

Thank you, I will try that when I get a moment. I also found another annoying problem, but hopefully easy to sort out. When I close the lid and open it (or when the screen goes blank when inactive) the screen remains black no matter what I do. The computer needs a hard restart to get the screen goi...

Re: Which ThinkPad gen suits best for Net/Free/OpenBSD?

look up man iwm that covers which of the newer intel wifi chipsets that openBSD covers, but be aware that due to the intel meltdown bug and the subsequent fallout OpenBSD disables hyper-threading by default and that hits performance.

Also there is https://www.openbsd.org/amd64.html

For Free/OpenBSD roughly anything that has an ipw2200 intel wifi onward till machines 2 or 3 years old. NetBSD is really a server OS AFAIK.

My X32 plays 720p files fine thru mpv but flash or 1080p from a webpage and your pegging the CPU, that's on debian but it's true for any distro from my experiences with my T43 and X32.

Re: Looking for a devil's advocate: why SHOULDN'T I move to Linux completely ?

Personally I have not used Linux or Windows on a daily basis in years. I suppose it depends on what kind of software you need to run on your PC for work or recreation. I use OpenBSD. <snip> Off topic but as someonfe mentioned OpenBSD - OpenBSD is probably the most secure distro out there, i agree i...

If you decide to install to your hard drive, you may be interested in using the installation media with non-free drivers, which helps a lot with hardware comp...

Re: Linux: WinTel "refugee" ~ Must-Know Tips ???

For you 1 simple tip - Use concise plain text when posting in linux/BSD forums or mailing lists or you probably won't get much help.

PS Dual boot is old hat, max the RAM and cut a VM image of windows and run that under Linux as Windows is notorious for trashing boot loaders.

@ Dekks : Many thanks for a well-positioned reply. Here's where I am at the moment: 1) I don't do any PC gaming. A conventional, real-world pinball machine is much more of my cup of tea. 2) Having used various *nix distros on recreational basis over the past decade, I have a decent understanding - ...

Re: Looking for a devil's advocate: why SHOULDN'T I move to Linux completely ?

Main reasons for not moving IMO roughly in order top to bottom. Like any transition DO YOUR RESEARCH before you flick the switch 1) Your a gamer who plays premium titles who do not support any form of Linux. Windows will always get preferential treatment wrt features & driver dev mindset - that won'...

The problem here is Intel: They have put out CPUs that can only reach their turbo-boost clock-speeds by using far more power than their TDP normally allows.
Sadly the siren call of the ultrabook marketing subsidy will mean that nothing will ever happen on that front.

Re: Similarity to the old way of doing things

The X230 doesn't use that "new" system though, does it? I know that it's lumped in with the X240-and-newer ultrabooks here on the forums for some reason, (even though it shares a lot more in common with the X220 series) but isn't its UltraNav more similar to the older architecture? The author references older trackpads and shows the maths needed to work out the acceleration etc over the different generations. It shows why the drivers in both Windows & Linux have their oddities.

I've been comparing it with the X200, and it does feel different somehow, but I can't exactly pinpoint how. I think that it's got to be the buttons; they do feel more concise on the X200. I do feel even more confident with it now, however, having switched caps from "soft rim" to "soft dome." I was ...

Count yourself lucky, but it's a fact win10 has had some pretty bad major patches. Creators update was particularly bad, bad enough for it to be temporarily disabled.

Can't see it being a big money stream if it's for consumers, businesses however may see it as of benefit seeing MS supply hw + sw. But given the recent history of poor patches i can see MS pushing dumb devoices with windows in ROM. Jeez, it's back to the 70s & time-sharing.

That is the main point about choosing a linux distro. There are no "true" right or wrong. The individual user needs to choose and commit to a distro that works for them. Although most are compatible - it depends on the machine and the user - and experimentation with different distros seems to be th...

What's a good distro for T60/T61/Frankenpad-type (or core 2 duo era period) machines? Basically one that works 100% out of the box and is lightweight yet functional? Any distro usually works with the age of machine, the decision is which WM/DE interface you want to use. Some distros like debian or ...
