Re: What do you do with Linux?

tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-dkms I think both of these modules work only on the T430 and X430 series and lower, on any newer machines they either don't load or don't report battery cycle information... I know it's an old post but to set things straight... for older than t430 use tp-smapi, for t430 and ...

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

That is the main point about choosing a linux distro. There are no "true" right or wrong. The individual user needs to choose and commit to a distro that works for them. Although most are compatible - it depends on the machine and the user - and experimentation with different distros seems to be th...

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

What's a good distro for T60/T61/Frankenpad-type (or core 2 duo era period) machines? Basically one that works 100% out of the box and is lightweight yet functional? Any distro usually works with the age of machine, the decision is which WM/DE interface you want to use. Some distros like debian or ...

Re: Linux - avoid Mint or Gentoo as both have such poor security understanding that both have had important infrastructure compromised so lose any credibility.

Openbox/Gnome3/i3 work well with the packages in Arch/Debian/Ubuntu in any Middleton machine with 4GB RAM+ and a SSD .

Re: Wireless USB and Turbo Memory?

Readyboost is sort of like Microsoft's stop gap solution/non-solution to low memory just like Turbo Memory was Intel's own solution/non=solution. See this is a common misconception, Readyboost is not about low memory. It's about nothing more than the MS PR dept fixation with reducing windows boot t...

Re: Those who own the 15" T4xp laptops, how useful are they in 2017?

Are you seriously bringing up throttling and performance drops in Kaby Lake in a thread discussing T4x laptops? Kaby Lake can probably throttle down to 1MHz and still run leaps and bounds around these 15-year old Pentium Ms! (yes, that's an intentional exaggeration). The point is that even with the...

Keep in mind keeping going with T4x 4:3 is bound to end someday when software requirements looms. Get a 4 core 15W notebook with 2K screen this way will help with LCD height requirements and quieter. 4 core/8 threads is kaby lake refresh Core i5-8350U at 3.6GHz with 4 cores running or i7-8650U (run...

Thanks for the reply all, I removed the Turbo Memory from my mashine, and it started right up (would not boot with the driver installed on Windows 10). Re: Wireless USB and Turbo Memory?

it's bad practice to run a Robson TM unit with a SSD. Best off removing the module. Why is that? SSD is so much faster than the slow HDD Robson was designed for, effectively your doing double the work leading to negative performance. It also doesn't allow one to use the optimal schedulers for a SSD.

By the time the win7 driver package arrived in which robson modules worked well [for what they had been designed for] it had been overtaken by 4GB RAM as standard and the arrival of SSD with which you should disable/remove cache modules like robson. Robson only worked well on RAM starved machines wi...

For older hw I would recommend Debian, but look up how to dl the nonfree-iso or know how to apt get them after basic installation. The documentation on howto do this is easily found on the Debian website. It's that step IMO that people seem to think is poor hw detection, it's just that you need to a...

Re: X32 Linux/ Ubuntu support, any experiences?

DOSBox is an emulator - not a virtual machine. To get good performance you need a machine much more powerful than the one you're emulating. That's not a real problem, since any DOS software ever written was designed to run on much slower machines that we have now. Even something as old as a Pentium...

There is also the possibility of using DOSBox and installing Win98 in it. That is not officially supported, and requires a custom build. May end up being more complicated than Wine. But for DOS games - DOSBox is the best.

If you want it as a document processor where the screen & screen size come into play they are great, not so as a web browsing device where modern JS laden pages kill the single core processor.
