AMD Pluton - Linux Installations
You'll have seen on Phoronix that the new Z13 TP doesn't allow Linux to be installed. Lenovo have now released a pdf showing how to fix this little snafu caused by the Microsoft marketing dept.

Re: You can say bye to your classic Thinkpad soon
According to this article , the Mesa DRI code supporting most older graphics chipsets (i965 tree) is going to be deprecated soon. The new driver appears to support only Haswell and above. Meaning that in 2025, when Windows 10 is finally discontinued, there will probably no way to run a modern OS of...

Re: New X230T Owner. Any suggestions? Ultrabase, etc.?
SSD for storage, max out to 16GB of RAM. This Ultrabase: https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_UltraBase_Series_3 If you have the money: FHD screen upgrade, Motherboard with Quad Core CPU, classic keyboard. The X230T keyboard is certainly OK but it's not comparable to a X61, so look at the classi...

Just retired my X230T after 5 years at work, used on shopfloor, at customers and in the field making extensive use of the annotation abilities. Replaced by a Thinkpad Yoga 260.

Re: X61 still relevant in 2020?
X61 is the smallest form factor fully featured ThinkPad. It also happens to be a classic design with the 4:3 screen nearly completely filling its lid area. The biggest problem with using old ultraportables in their intended purpose is that good batteries are not easily accessible, plentiful, or aff...

Re: Requesting Help Finding Modern Linux Distros for T60
Debian is the best choice... but many people are scared as they perceive it more complicated as Ubuntu or Linux Mint (false argument if you ask me) or too boring compared to distros like Arch... but Debian is able to do everything you want it to do and this in probably the best maintained distro of...

On the subject of how much omph you need for Software development.. I noticed that some more obscure corners of universe - Rust, OCaml - may require you to use a new generation of editors - VSCode (steer clear! use it's telemetry-free carbon copy called VSCodium instead), possibly Atom (VSCode's sp...

Re: Should I buy a T60?
I'd suggest something from the last decade at least. The T60 is what... around 15 years old by now? And it has quite some notable limitations: * 3GB RAM max * limited to dual-core CPUs, 2.3GHz max (the overpriced T7600) * SATA 150MB/s * weak graphics (unsuitable for modern UIs) Your wrong with the ...

Debian is more complicated in that you need to know a little a bout how you want to setup your partitions Hiya, but if you're running an SSD does it not make sense to throw everything at just a single partition? For me debian bullseye has been running on my T60 the last month, had buster the previous year and a half. That's with ati/radeon driver and mitigations=off kernel parameter. For the T2400 your gonna need a 32bit OS DL so make sure that's what you had, Debian still do 32bit, Arch 32bit was officiall...

Re: Is image-loading warning still enforced in the forum in 2019?
I've heard of the whole cell phone issue, but I say too bad. If you don't have an LTE connection in 2019 you shouldn't be browsing the web in the first place. And its a fallacy to believe only the US has "broadband" capabilities. Many countries in fact out pace the United States in overall internet...

Pretty much moved all 4 thinkpads over to stock debian bar the X230T which is on Arch. Have mothballed my T61 with nVidia GPU as the mess that is now 340-xx on arch pretty much leaves it unsupported.

Surely the answer is to avoid Microsoft altogether. There is obviously a learning curve, but it's not huge, especially if you go for a Linux distro like Mint or Ubuntu, which are designed to be easy to use by non-geeks. Not only will you be much more secure, but the computer will run faster and the...
