Re: X61s stuck in Dock
is the ejector pull arm thing on the left side stuck? even if so, you might be able shimmy the laptop out (just tried mine to see).
Or Is the key lock on the right side in the locked position?

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...
MX-18 Linux (with the XFCE DE) is now final and I highly recommend it (ymmv) : - https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-linux/files/Final/MX-18/ . I'm running it on everything from a Thinkpad 600x to a 701DS. I'm using for Thinkpads that would run Windows XP or 7. For older Thinkpads running Windows 9...

Re: WiFi Options for ThinkPad A31
I've been using an " EZ Connect N Pro " 802.11n 300Mbps PCMCIA WiFi Adapter for Thinkpads 600x, A31p, and T43p. It's cheap (under $10) and is a Ralink RT2800 802.11n card. At home it's getting up to about 20-30 Mbit/s down and 13-19 up of actual speeds in Linux (I don't use Windows online anymore so...

Re: SSD Capacity supported by T42P
I would think a T42p should work with 1TB mSATA -- I've got an older A31p running with 500gb mSATA (1TB was too much) and a newer T43pS with a 2TB SSD -- so, 500gb should be safe bet. Also, for more storage, consider you can put another HDD/SSD in the UltraBay (probably up to 2TB), and/or spare unus...

Re: A31p desirability?
For A31p I've found Windows 2000 SP4 for offline and Linux antiX 17.1 for online are the sweetspots (although Windows 98se to Windows XP FLP are also good choices for offline and Linux MX 17.1 for online). You got me curious with that *nix. Now I'll definitely have to look into it, just to find out...

Re: A31p desirability?
FWIW, another point of desirability for an A31p is it can actually use a decently huge Hard Drive ! I just did successful installs on a 250gb and a 500gb mSATA SSD in an Aleratec adapter (I tried pushing it further but, sadly, a 1TB mSATA wouldn't boot) ( specific A31p = 2653-R4U using BIOS 1.10 200...

Re: Toshiba sells its laptop business to Sharp
A long time ago Toshiba laptops were very good. I absolutely love the light grey Toshiba laptops: Porteges (t3400, t3400ct, t3600, 610ct, 620ct, 660cdt), Satellites (490xcdt), and Tecras (780cdm/dvd) from 1993-1998 were exceptionally good and exceptionally strong competition for Thinkpads (some perh...

After testing dozens over the past few years on a wide variety of Thinkpads, consistently the absolute Best Linux Distro I've found (for me) is MX Linux ( https://mxlinux.org/ ), currently at version 17.1, you can get the most recently updated versions here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-linux...

Windows XP -- adding Tablet PC Edition parts into regular XP, possible?
Is it possible to add the Tablet / Pen portions of the Windows XP Tablet Edition to a regular (non-tablet) Windows XP install? The XP Tablet edition is a royal pain to re-install. I want to set up a Thinkpad X60t with it in a way that I can easily do so again in the future. It would be nice to have...

A31p is still pretty darn useful even 15 years later! I just did a fresh install of the new Linux Debian Stretch distro AntiX 17 (on 128gb Plextor mSATA SSD) listened to a CD, watched a TV show from DVD, edited some text documents and pictures, and am doing some web stuff now... Still a pleasure to ...

Why only 6GB of RAM? Why not 8GB of RAM like other FrankenPads? Seems strange to boost the processor so much and not Max out the memory.

Re: No Windows Update for Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000
There is/was some unofficial Roll-ups and Service Packs for both Win98se and Win2k that had all the official Microsoft stuff and then some (e.g., part of the extra Win2K stuff let you install a lot of software that normally would only run on WinXP).

Re: Experimentation with A31
I just did a clean install on an A31p with WinXP-FLP SP3 on a Samsung HM160HC (great HDD!) -- so far it's working very well with 2GHz and 2GB RAM! I'm planning to compare it vs. Windows 2000 SP4, regular WinXP SP3 is too slow on A31p, IMO. Linux both AntiX-16 + MX-15 (Debian 8 ) and Linux Lite (Ubun...
