Re: Why I don't bother with a Smartphone

Worth the $0.01 gamble! Certainly. FreedomPop makes money through: 1) selling refurbished old phones for more than what they're worth; 2) users who actually pay for those non-free phone plans; and 3) people who use the free plans but accidentally exceed their monthly quota, and get charged somethin...

Re: Why I don't bother with a Smartphone

And is there perhaps a cheaper solution? Yes, FreedomPop has a free plan that includes, per month, 200 minutes of phone calls, 500 SMS messages, and 500MB data. I have had two smartphones on FreedomPop for just over 3 years and never had problems with data usage, although I haven't done enough text...

I understand. However, that fact alone makes them a complete non-starter for silly old me. I understand that "silly old me" is just an expression, but in this case I do think you are being silly, refusing to adapt to new technologies. Eventually your T61p will be too old to do anything useful, you ...

Re: POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

The 43" screens I was looking at were in the 24-25" range with stand, though I suppose I could have pushed the screen to the rear of my desk. You don't push your desktop monitors all the way to the back? I always do that in order to maximize the amount of usable desk space. In fact, by doing so, an...

Re: POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

I still wasn't sure I'd keep them. The pixel density was a bit higher, but what really concerned me is the new monitors were about six inches taller than the old ones, 16” vs 22”. I still wanted run one in portrait mode and when I first started using them, I felt like a kid asking my mom if I could...

Re: POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

I just noticed that there is finally a vote for 2560x1440! My desk at work has two 40" 3840x2160 monitors and one 27" 2560x1440 *touchscreen* monitor. Because I do like to touch the screen, I actually use the 27-incher most often. I definitely prefer the 40-inchers when I do serious work involving l...

Re: A 7" Windows 10 device for 40 Euro?

I was mildly interested in an earlier model of the GPD UMPC (also 7" with Windows 10") and searched for them once in a while on eBay. Even the cheapest used ones always sold for >$300, so I lost interest. I would be happy to pay $300 for this new-and-improved version. If it were a 2-in-1, I would ra...

Re: POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

I tend to dislike cheap 22" FHD units as I feel there's not enough height. Me too. I had one or two when they were still a fairly novel entity but the novelty wore off quickly. But Acer, Dell and I think ViewSonic have 20" (19.5" viewable) FHD monitors which are not a bad idea if you want to save d...

Re: POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

FHD is just a lot more common than WUXGA. But in this poll I am asking about what people consider to be the ideal resolution, which isn't necessarily the best resolution they have actually used. Whenever I use FHD I feel that it's too short -- for instance it's not tall enough for viewing many PDF ...

Re: Laptop collectors: if you're allowed to collect just one laptop, which one would it be?

As for the max resolution, found somewhere that it's 2048x1536. But still has to be doublechecked. The resolution limit for VGA outputs is always stated as 2048x1536 or less, but on my QNIX QHD2410R and Monoprice 10734 monitors I have had success getting 2560x1440 and 2560x1600 from most VGA ports ...

Re: W500 - 4GB versus 8GB

W500 already has SSD. :parrot: That's all the more reason to go for 8GB of RAM, so you can disable the page file and reduce the number of write cycles on the SSD. I disable the page file on my Surface and HP detachables, which both have 4GB RAM, and once in a while I get a "low memory" warning even...

My choice is IBM A21p. Spports Windows from 95 up to XP (has all the drivers for all of them), yet sound works in pure DOS Wow that's a very favorable feature I never considered before. I do still play DOOM and DOOM2 now and then, so the full DOS compatibility including sound is helpful. And of cou...

Re: POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

Looking at the poll results, I am surprised that more people picked 1920x1080 than 1920x1200. On this forum there has been so much discussion of the superiority of WUXGA vs. FHD. The PD3200U panel is definitely 32.0", not 31.5". The dimensions I measured match the datasheet almost down to the millim...

A few more votes have been cast. I must say I am VERY surprised that 3840x2160 is leading. Re: Lenovo CES 2019

I would say it probably was chosen to save money. It was a custom made 13.3" 16:10 WXGA+ LED panel, but still TN – Lenovo could have chosen IPS panels instead, as they clearly had access to them at the time (as they were being used in X series tablets like the X61t or X200t). Re: Lenovo CES 2019

*cough* X301 *cough* For the X300 and X301 I doubt that the crappy LCD panel was to save money, but instead to minimize weight and extend battery duration. Had Lenovo wanted to save money, they would have opted for 1280x800 or 1366x768. 1440x900 is hardly an "upgrade" over 1280x800 anyway. That's p...

Exciting news! Thanks for sharing! In the long term you would save money by getting an LED TV, versus buying the adapters and continuing to use the CRT TV. The LED TV would also doubl...
