Re: Just a 20x IBM portable stereo CD-ROM - Timewarp (Pictur
Ok, having checked the manual, it is listed as a game port. Apparently the Stereo CD-ROM has a built in sound card, so for older laptops without a sound card it can also be used as an external sound card. The 'game' port is there for the other intended use of that port, MIDI. So instead of connectin...

I've seen photos of that thing. Definitely something I've been pushing back to collect. I think its valueble because its so obscure. I did have one a while back but all I had was the drive and it looked like it had been thrown off the top of a tower, I didn't even know they came with all these acce...

Ok, it's not quite a ThinkPad, or a desk setup, but there isn't a section dedicated to accessories/perepherials here so I'm adding it in anyway  Due to the recent acquisition of a TP 701c coupled with the old Toshiba 100CS in the cupboard and my love (trigger happy ebay skills) for vintage ...

WANT TO BUY: External floppy drive for 701c
Hello all,
I am looking out for an external floppy drive suitable for a 701c, the older chunkier style connector.
Preferably from the UK, although it depends what the international shipping charges come in at.

I know that this disease (collecting Thinkpads) is not curable 100%. And i feel myself very ill too ;) I don't know why, but i have ordered W700 couple of days ago. Someday i'll make photo of my Thinkpads, but not now. Worse thing - i feel that i have infected one of my coworkers ;( It is a disease...

Cool! But who painted that T60 red??? That would have been me, it's actually bright pink (not the best photo) as I have 2 daughters who are pink mad. The T60 is currently being set up for them with a child friendly linux distro, some educational stuff and some games. :D Edit: It's not a Thinkpad T6...

Edit: Never mind, google states that a Planar is another name for a motherbaord used by IBM

A collection of Thinkpads (Pictures)
Hi all, I've seen a few threads related to others collections so thought I would share my own 'current' collection. I used to have a whole load of legacy Thinkpads (numbers followed by letters) but unfortunately I sold a whole load of them off during the family financial crisis of last year. Any how...

Thinkpad 701c replacing or removing onboard memory
Hello all, I have a 701c showing error 201, unfortunately this error still shows if the extended memory is removed meaning it's one of the onboard chips that are at fault. Here are my questions: 1) My 701c has 8MB of onboard memory, is it possible to simply remove 2 of the chips to convert it to a 4...

Thinkpad 701c screen problems (pictures)
Hello all, I am experiencing some problems with the screen on a 701c. Down the right hand side of the screen there is an approx 1" wide strip that is slightly darker than it should be, when the background is black or white the colours are displayed correctly. Sometimes if the lid is moved this area ...

Re: Just added a 701c to my collection
New update: Ebay's Global Shipping Program have issued a full refund for the 701c, including all shipping costs and import duty charges, they have also said that I do not need to send the item back to the seller as the refund has come from eBay's GSP. So, the final result: I have a free Thinkpad 701...

Re: Thinkpad X24 RAM upgrade (beep 1-3-1)
Yes, it's that simple. X24 requires PC133 memory modules. Thank you, that's a pain, I've got a few spare PC-100s, the only PC-133 I have that can be switched with PC-100 are in a Thinkpad web server, I daren't destroy the uptime of that so... back to ebay it is for some PC-133, at least that way I ...

Thinkpad X24 RAM upgrade (beep 1-3-1)
Hi, I recently bought a Thinkpad X24 off ebay for £10, after installing a hard drive it appears to work quite well although I will replace a few of the plastics as the screen bezel/lid have seen better days. When it arrived it had no ram installed (just the 128MB on-board), so I added a 256MB PC-100...

I don't tend to use Windows too often as I've mainly been using Linux for a few years now. I do quite like Windows 7 and get on with it well when I'm using it. I did install the pre-release of Windows 8 on a spare computer when it was available as a test, but didn't get on with it at all so it was a...

Hi all, I've gone a bit quiet on this one for a while. The 701c arrived last week with a crumpled corner on the well packed box. The 701c powers on and works, but has a chunky line down the right side of the LCD. I've been in contact with the seller who is being apologetic and understanding about th...

Hi all, I'm currently studying a BSc in Computing and IT with the OU and am doing a small module on the history of computers, where I have come across a handful of predictions made in the early years which you may find interesting. I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. That chang...

I'm not amazingly up-to-date with Arch as I've become an addict of Debian. That said though pretty much all modern Linux distributions have much better driver support for older or unusual hardware, along with support for the latest gadgets. As the old annoyance of Linux was usually WiFi support the ...

Hi Temetka, I haven't got any plans other than general tinkering and remembering what Windows 98 was like, I bought this one purely on the basis of it being really cheap rather than for a purpose. Wow, so in terms of those hard drive prices the x220 I am using at the moment has $28,000,000 of hard drive space in it.
On the other hand, I agree that is one hell of a sexy modem although although unfortunately the 4.8kbps is a bit of a deal breaker vs fibre broadband.

Re: Recommended packages for a T60 running CrunchBang (Debia
Rather than installing extra software to help speed it up I would usually opt to remove anything that I don't use. Any extra software that you install, especially anything that runs a constant process will only slow a machine down. Step 1) Remove anything that you don't use. Step 2) Run apt-get auto...

Re: Grub and Lilo won't install on E530.
Hi, If you have Windows installed on the first drive (C:\ or /dev/sda) and Debian installed on the second drive (/dev/sdb), when you installed Grub/LiLo chances are that it has installed to the MBR on the second drive (/dev/sdb) and your TP is set to boot from the original hard drive. I'm guessing w...

Re: Will Ubuntu run on ThinkPad 10, a Bay Trail-T tablet?
Spec-wise it should run without any issues, modern Linux has a habit of recognising most hardware out of the box but the best way to find out is to give it a go. I'm not too much into the touch screen way of life but I have heard the KDE offers a better touch experience than Gnome/Unity so you may w...
