It will take long time at post with dead cmos battery. Once replaced still same till settings are set and saved, then next reboots will be much quicker. Wait long than usual get in bios with F1 then set time and date then save, then let it start up, don't power down, let it boot like this, it willl ...

Only one sensor for closed when magnet is next to this turns LCD off. To disable, take the bezel off the LCD lid and locate the magnet and simply take it out. Put bezel back on. This will meet your needs. Or in the keyboard bezel assembly, takes HMM document to disassemble this T400 to find the magn...

Win 10 will not cut it on 3.25GB, 8GB is best realistically. SSD is a must. CPU & integrated GPU does not matter much. Tx10 is no faster than Tx00 it replaced. Battery runtime is no better either. Processors is i core first generation for this reason but best fit is XP or light use windows 7. Use thermal grease instead of pad for the GPU, Use a 1.5mm thermal pad on the northbridge. This results in better thermals.

T400/T500 needs both whitelist removal and slic 2.1 put on separately. I have done this same way years ago with a T500 now running Win 10pro when 10 came out for free in 2014. Still in use by my friend's but they will eventually replace this with newer one some day.

Use your original windows 7 COA key that came with this T400 (look under battery or on bottom of the T400) to install windows 10, Home becomes windows 10, 7 Pro becomes 10 pro. Make sure the graphics is set either discrete or intel in bios. Not switchable.

The little potmetal pins are mushroomed over keeping fan in place on the copper plate holes. Just use a sharp flush wire cutter and shave the tops of mushrooms off then fan will come free. Get different heatsink with wider fin pitch also fins slightly thicker too, base of the heatsink should be thick. Dell heatsink makes good heatsinks from Optiplex series used for tower. Re: T420s to fanless server project - cooling concerns

If you can, change the smaller block of aluminum to copper, you should able to drop about 10 to 15C this way. The thermal conductivity is poorer with aluminum over distance. The heatsink is good design by the way.

Again, vacuuming will not fix that. Heatsink requires fan disassembly by take the fan assembly off the heatsink to get at the heatsink's fins properly with a brush and blow it out to finish cleaning. T500/W500 have same problem with dust build up inside the fan at the fins. http://www.paulstravelpic...

These mentioned heatsink can be further modded too: take a T500/W500 fan with cover from the heatsink and put it on the T61 heatsink, this will increase the cooling efficiency. Best part about this is there is nothing needed about modifying the fan to fit the T61 heatsink, just install it as is. T50...

Since there is no "W500" heatsinks, the heatsink shares with both T500 and W500 and is already made for 35W CPU usually. What you are basically holding is a T500 chassis with single difference is GPU for W500. What you need is to take heatsink fan off for a dust cleaning inside and lift the fan roto...
