Re: Anyone upgrade a T420 from 8 GB to 12 GB of RAM?

One appreciate 16GB if doing heavy work with large data and heavy software. I do see the difference even with normal use on 16GB. And I use SSD in both T420 and Latitude 3350, only difference in memory size is Latitude's is 8GB while T420 has 16GB and is just a touch slower. Both using matched pair....

There are plenty of dome keyboards that are actually decent and quiet. I have a old Logitech K120 which is still good after several years.

And double the memory from 8GB to 16GB matched pair if you can get swing the expense This will cut down on swapping and speed up at same time but easy on runtime.

Hey, only way you will know for sure is take one yellow capacitor (small ceramic SMD capacitors and tantalum cap tend to fail shorted) at a time and check resistance like you have done before till shorted part is found.

T420 does not have UEFI. All Ivy bridge computers started this with introduction of UEFI which is Tx30 and onwards. The bios is not the thing about TRIM feature. OS does the TRIM upkeep begun with windows 7. OSes requires 64bit to handle GPT partitions regardless of boot or not. XP 64bit booting fro...

Re: Anyone upgrade a T420 from 8 GB to 12 GB of RAM?

12GB is not dual channel mode. 8 + 4. 2+2, 4+4, or 8+8 is dual channel mode and helps with performance and bandwidth maxed out, both helpful for CPU and integrated GPU. Download CPU-Z, very small program and check what CPU-Z says on "memory" tab and for more details on each slot, use "SPD" tab. Chee...

Turn off UEFI by turning on legacy mode for storage section first. To boot in UEFI mode requires GPT partition which you do not have, Legacy is used where MBR partitions are used for booting. You'd get more bang out of pushing the RAM up to 288MB if you haven't already (a pair of PC133 CL2 128MB sticks plus the on-motherboard 32MB). A PC133 stick isn't gonna play with TP600 series nearly as well as a PC100 or PC66 part in the case of 600 and 600E. If you have 128MB PC66 memory in the sl...

These machines are really loud in comparison to T42. I love silence so I am still using T42 (15' XGA, Radeon 7500, 2GB RAM) for programming (Eclipse) a...

Take out Turbo Cache module every time. This only add more problems compared to helping with performance (not that any noticeable improvement) and 2GB is too small to help either.
