Re: A31p - a decade later (LONG)

t's the opposite. In the CPU department, the T41 is much better (don't make the mistake of thinking a Pentium M is anything like a Pentium 4-M), and in the GPU department they are more or less equivalent, depending on the exact GPU in the T41. Neither is pleasant to use in a modern environment, unl...

Re: A31p - a decade later (LONG)

I’ll keep on using my A31p on daily basis until the support for XP ends in 2014. After that it will enjoy semi-retirement as a Linux box and a typewriter with the best screen that the world has ever seen. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T41 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:A31p Hey Geo...

Re: What do you do with Linux?

I think MS are fairly busy trying to perfect Windows 10 and its tentacles at present. Also there have been some ransom-ware patches this year and such but yes disabling all updates is definitely an option. Currently I only install security updates but in truth I am concerned about Google, MS, Intel...

Re: OS/2 Warp 4.52 on a ThinkPad T43 / T43p

There was something I just happened to see in the T43 manual: If you are using OS/2 in the default format, HPFS, you cannot create a hibernation file. If you want to use hibernation mode, you will need to reinstall OS/2 with FAT format. And it's true, I wasn't able to get the T43 to properly 'hibern...

Re: List of Thinkpads that Supported OS/2

I'd just like to announce that I've managed to get OS/2 working on my T420 today!!! Needed to change BIOS setting for SATA to AHCI to get it to boot. Did you manage to get wifi or sound working? Or is it just basic functionality? (IBM supported all of the hardware on the T43 with OS/2, fortunately).

http://vintagemacmuseum.com/reading-powerbook-2-5-scsi-hard-drives/ According to that they are mini-centronics like the 80-pin SCA on U320 hotswap drives. Either that or maybe some use pins like 2.5" IDE disks, but the SCA connector looks to be the only one I can see, and most likely the one in the ...

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition

No, I was referring to 2.5" SCSI *exclusively* (not other hard disk technologies; of which you're missing some like ESDI and PS/2 all-in-one hard disks). In that Bill Morrow is saying the caddies are different, which implies that there are variating 2.5" SCSI connectors--which I did not think was a ...

i still have a few of those 750/755 series caddys and they are NOT the same as those for the SCSI drives in the power PC 850 series.. SCSI drives have had a wider header on the drive.. and the plug that mated with the thinkpad was a wide trapezoid sort of thing.. i have a LOT of the bits and parts ...

If 51NB can economically make custom motherboards, why can't Lenovo?
Well Lenovo would also have to provide support and warranty, among other things. So there are a few more things to consider that 51NB has the luxury of ignoring.

You'd need to configure Xorg in some fashion (unfortunately it's fairly unstable and often drops custom settings). One of the worst pieces of software I've ever had the pleasure to deal with.

Re: Linux TrackPoint Driver (how to replicate rich IBM driver)

Virtually all Linux distros use X.org, so that's how the TrackPoint would have to be configured under. Unfortunately X.org is programmed quite poorly and after trying a bunch of things, it's just not possible to get the same awesome TrackPoint sensitivity as you can under Windows|OS/2 with Linux. Did you check the Windows 10 event viewer / bluescreenview?
Did you try running the laptop in something other than Windows 10 like in the UEFI/BIOS for an extended period of time to see if it locks there?
Did you run a memory test with memtestx86+?

Give me back the rim! (low profile soft rim trackpoint mod) *pictures*

It's time for operation: 'give me back that soft rim and defy China's lenovo!' That means of course, hacking an exsiting soft rim. First the assessment. As we can see, the 2nd generation IBM trackpoint caps are about 2x the height of the lenovo low profile (and the soft rim was the 'tallest' of them...

I think this should be called the Thinkpad Retromod. If you can call a 70 corvette with a new fancy engine a 70 corvette, because it is still a sports car that does what its intended purpose. X1 Carbon Gen 4 - thoughts so far

So I've been using the X1 Carbon (4th gen) for a good week now after getting it. Thought I'd share what I think of the laptop so far. The reason why I went for the 4th gen instead of the 5th gen, is because I prefer the hinge style on the 4th gen (Lenovo retrograded back to the static ThinkPad 'edge...

If you take a look at the A31, IBM redirected the cables through a middle specialized hinge, and went ahead with two 'slim' symmetrical metal hinges; they are meant for support.

I don't know why so many people obsess over the death of the ThinkPad (or PCs in general) or Lenovo's finances. As far as many people and businesses are concerned, they're going to keep on buying ThinkPads. Heck, they've been buying them even with Lenovo's changes. It's also going to be awhile yet b...

Strangely enough I just inherited a fully functional T41 the other day. It's a lost cause. Nobody has it and it's forgotten to the sands of time.

Best just to stick with AIX 4.2.1 on the 850.

Also, I'd suggest when doing an initial install to format the install partition as FAT so that you can access it from other OS's. You need to do that so that you can add a network driver, without which you are basically stuck. N.B. If you choose FAT you'll be limited as to what you can install due ...

Puppy Linux should be fine if you use the faster variants of PIIIM Tualatin (1.13ghz, 1.2ghz or 1.26/1.33 if you can find one because they are EXTREMELY RARE) with a gig of RAM.
