Re: Chinese keyboards on Legacy ThinkPads

You need to look for the keyboard assembly number to be sure. It's on the bottom of the keyboard assembly itself. It might be a Japanese keyboard you are looking at. I have seen new Lenovo ThinkPad keyboards available online with silkscreened letters in another character set, but the part number ind...

Re: 600E boot problem

MS-DOS and PC-DOS used FDISK /MBR to blow away and recreate the master boot record. I remember having to do that when putting a drive in a system from some older/newer one to be able to use it. However, that means you are installing from floppy.

Re: 600E boot problem

The OS is not the issue. It's the BIOS. If the BIOS doesn't have the HDD geometry hardcoded into it or a similar drive size, it will return a lower value to the OS. look and see if drive sizes are mentioned in the read.me file of the last BIOS update. Verify you turned on LBA mode in the BIOS to use...

Re: IBM Thinkpad 760XL

You may need to look up information on the specific part number for your drive. If it will read CD-R, you may need to try a few of the expensive brands. Even when updating current IBM systems firmware from CD-ROM there are short lists of what type of media types you need to use (i.e. CD-R not CD-R+,...

Re: Question on IBM 3545-001 Dock I

There is/was a TV Tuner option that went in the 750C/Cs The video in would route through that.
Come to think of it, there was a Y audio cable that came with the dock would plug into the laptop sound card jacks and pass through to the speakers. I don't remember how it routed inside the dock though.

Re: Question on IBM 3545-001 Dock I

The dock is from 1992, the word "standard" is being used instead of "common" The SCSI standard was used. The older standard may or may not include which connector size was pulled out of the bin during the design phase. So there may be x number of drives made with the specific connector that fits the...

Re: Question on IBM 3545-001 Dock I

It's a SCSI controller, they are all SCSI drives. I don't recall if they are type I or II. It's not non-standard, it's just old SCSI. I would have to lookup the info later, but it may be that one of the ports on the back is for external SCSI devices (drives, scanner, etc.) There are drivers specific...

Re: 600X clean install W98SE apminst.inf ???

The inf file should just be a text file. With the older Windows OS the patches and such were layered, so it's possible that it's uninstalling and reinstalling lots of programs and drivers. Doesn't APM stand for advanced Power Management? I forget when it was introduced, but if you look through the i...

Re: Three TEAC floppy drives not working

The older system floppy drives seem to have much stricter operating parameters. I found that floppy diskettes made in the late 80's and early 90's work flawlessly in the ThinkPads of that time period. The floppy diskettes made after 2002-2003 work with newer systems, but the older systems have a lot...

Re: Tips on IBM Thinkpad 750Cs

The TP750C/Cs is one of the last systems that will run AIX PS/2 1.3 if you can find about 100 IBM floppy diskettes and have a 170MB or 340MB HDD.
With the last BIOS update, the TP750C/Cs can use the 810MB and 1.2GB HDD (not useable with AIX though) from the TP755

Re: TP 600X recovery cd not working?

Unfortunately I can't find the notes I made to finish the install. I think those may be copies I made a few years ago of the factory media I have. There was a defect in one of the zip files for DVDExpress inside the zip file from IBM. Again, if it's even the set I'm thinking of.

Was the graphics card in there originally? Are you able to connect via serial/management port? A serial cable, a putty session configured for a USB/serial adapter is what I use now days with my modern notebook. As far as the SCSI drive, you need to connect to firmware and run diagnostics first. Firs...

As I recall, on the 770x CDs the first thing was to load a virtual floppy in memory that was a subdirectory on the CD. That would be A: Then the config.sys and autoexec.bat in A; would set the CD-ROM drive to something and the hard drive to something else, (I recall Z:, R:, and M: but don't quote me...

The S/390 is/was a mainframe. There were a few normal games that worked with the pen for the 360P/PE and 730T/TE under DOS/Win311 in the 1990's (the original Warcraft worked as I recall), but most pen business applications were geared toward handwriting recognition. Win95? That is when USB was first out. Microsoft didn't provide device drivers, that came from the device manufactures. Just look at how goofy the addressing was on the older systems for PCMCIA
