Re: 380XD BIOS memory test fails

I have a 32MB card in a 750C that seems to take forever to check, but it does finish eventually. I haven't timed it though.

Re: IBM Thinkpad 240 USB Windows 98 Installation

As I recall, it was designed to boot from a specific PCMCIA CD-ROM drive or floppy. The early BIOS won't have boot from USB 1.0. Win98 was all real mode drivers as well, meaning the OS had to load the (correct) device driver first to use the device. The device drivers for Win98 were very limited, ev...

If you get them off Amazon or eBay, just be careful that you looked up the correct part number. There was a flood of keyboards from China that were just the US keyboards with Cyrillic silkscreened on the side. Not any different from the OEM outside of the key logger added to the board...

Re: Help needed restoring a couple of 600X thinkpads

If I recall correctly, the 600X WIN98 recovery media checks the BIOS for the IBM name and once found, will continue the restore process, which is mostly unzipping files onto a blank hard drive. I believe the serial/activation number for win98/NT was hard coded into the recovery image rather than the...

Re: Everyone needs a classic IBM ThinkPad running MS-DOS + Windows 3.11

I started in the early 80's with the Tandy TRS-80 model III running TRS-DOS on floppy. No hard disk drives. I remember making lots of bootable disks for other programs so I didn't have to swap diskettes so often just to reread command.com I do recall a law office I went to once having an original IB...

Re: Win98 installation on the 600

Take a deep breath and step through the process. 1) (optional) go into bios and make notes of the current settings on paper, then reset to defaults. 2) boot from Win98 floppy, fdisk /mbr and reboot 3) boot from Win98 floppy, fdisk whole drive and reboot 4) boot from Win98 floppy, format c: /s and re...

I'd need to look at the spec sheets, but I think it a system bus type issue. It's most likely is not compatible with anything newer than 75x family

Re: Old drive not recognized with IDE converter.

IF I recall correctly, the pin out on the older IDE drives was different by one or two pins from the EIDE standard.
I've had to use LapLink 5 and cables to copy 750 era and earlier DOS systems to a 770X system running WIN98 in real mode that had a USB port.

Are you saying you have the floppy disk creation utility on your system still? As I recall it is just the OS, drivers, and some utilities, but not a full factory restore. You would need a recovery CD (if there was one for that model) to put it back to factory. If you want to make the floppies, I rec...

Re: Thinkpad 770X recovery with 770Z discs?

In this case we were talking about using recovery media for a different model. The older the system, the more specific the drivers were for devices and chipsets. The recovery media is a series of batch files and compressed achieves that work fine for the intended systems. Mileage varied for other mo...

It's been a long time since I messed with PCMCIA drivers, but as I recall the DOS drivers and programs, or "real mode" was different than the Win95 driver and programs. There are/were warnings in the IBM ThinkPad text documents about trying to use both or one vs. the other. It also had configuration...

Uh... no. No there weren't. There was a half length expansion slot on the original dock from 1992 that you could add a microchannel FDD controller card and attach an external 5.25" but I never saw anyone implement it. Here's a link to the adapter manual: http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/oa/OA%20-%20I...

I've already successfully rebuilt 2 750 series batteries that currently run for about 5-7 hours on a charge.
That is a long fricken time! Didn't the originals when new last for maybe 30-40 minutes?

Re: HDD caddy for the 360

If you look in the "Personal Systems Reference" it states that the IDE disks in caddies for the 755 series will work in the 360 and 750 family. Those went up to 1.2GB according to the documentation. I can verify up to the 1.2GB working (with the BIOS upgrades). I thought I read somewhere that the la...

Re: Contrast/brightness controls on active matrix LCDs?

I'd have to look, but I recall the User's Guide for the 750C stating it was one way for TFT and another for Monochrome, etc. I noticed later production display units didn't seem to follow that convention.

Re: HDD caddy for the 360

The answer is mixed. The ThinkPad BIOS has to know the drive geometry or it will not be recognized correctly. Later BIOS versions will recognize a blank drive up to and including 1.2GB (so the later drives in a caddy from the 755 would be useable in the 360 or 750). Without the BIOS update, you coul...

I think it may be hard coded in the BIOS as to which CD-ROM it can boot from (i.e. IBM), but it should boot from floppy and read from any PCMCIA CD-ROM

From the picture it looks like it's running AIX version 3 something. I'm sorry I missed the auction. I did Y2K migrations from that version.
If anything went wrong with that unit, I would have no idea where parts or install media could be located to fix it.
