It won't be very fast, mind you, with its Pentium M and very dated ATI graphics at best.
Even when running some Linux distro?
Depends on what you're doing. If browsing, Firefox 32 bit is very slow nowadays. You can play some retro games though if you have ATI GPU.

I agree with dr_st, you should stick with what you have, it aint broke so no need to fix it.

I'm typing this on a T61 right now with Windows 7 64 bit. Everything works great.

So if I'm staring at this screen for over 5 minutes https://i.imgur.com/stJAH71.jpg what do I do? Flashing from an SD card in a USB adapter.

There is no activity from the HDD light.

Re: Changing Actions of One Set of Hardware Buttons

I don't know about the newer laptops like the P series with 3 buttons for the touchpads. In my T500 there is actually a setting under the Buttons section of Touchpad settings in the Ultranav tab of the Windows Mouse properties to configure different actions for the touchpad buttons like reloading th...

FS: egpu GTX 950, EXP GDC Beast v8.0, Dell DA2 atx

I don't play games anymore and I'd like to liquidate my egpu project. It works to accelerate the internal display on Optimus supporting Thinkpads. Adapter goes through the expresscard slot. I've ran it with T500 (no Optimus), T410s, T420, T430, and T520 all running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and it makes ...

Re: What's a good temperature range for T61P?

Considering the 14.1" 4:3 and the 15.4" T61 use the same heatsink they should get the same performance, I'd think? Heatsink assemblies can develop defects that decrease their performance. There may also be some models of heatsink that are better or worse than others for the same model, eg. 2 pipes v...

In my upgrade path I completely skipped the T61 generation, going from a T42p daily driver to T500 but as my name suggests I will be working on a 14.1" 4:3 T61 project soon. They're very neat laptops and I appreciate you sharing yours.

Re: Retro Thinkpad T61p Build! Warning PICS!

They managed to keep 4:3 in as long as possible, even equipping some T60p with IDTech panels meant for T40 series, and keeping a 14.1" T61 model. Maybe they still had some 14.1" 4:3 stock? TNs are cheaper, after all. X201s was also an anomaly with shortages of its one of a kind Toshiba 1440x900 disp...

Re: Retro Thinkpad T61p Build! Warning PICS!

Being older design language I would consider T61p to be fairly retro. It still runs the full width indicator lights, had no LEDs on the keyboard, and unmutated keyboard layout. There was a lot of Lenovoism inserted into the design like the all black Ultranav buttons and cheap looking gray vol/power ...

@hwattys

You are right, T61 is of the last. Of the same era (Santa Rosa) there was also X61, X61s, X61 Tablet, and a rare Euro Santa Rosa "R61" and "R61i" refresh of the 15.1" R60.

Look for a T500 9 cell Panasonic 41++ FRU: 42T4620 or 6 cell Pansonic 41+ FRU: 42T4622. Mind you these laptops especially the 15.4" ones with their high resolution power hungry CCFL screens and DGPUs will not get good battery life even with a 9 cell, although I suspect with an LED backlight mod !! m...

Re: T43p & FireGL V3200: Good idea to repsste the paste between the heat spreader and the die?

I have been unable to find a longfan from a DGPU R52. I wouldn't mind this acquisition for my R50p which gets by on its original DGPU passive cooler interfaced with a thermal pad!! A bit stupid, but less so than the A31p which has NO GPU HEATSINK OF ANY KIND. The dedicated T40, R50, T60, R60, and Z6...

T420 cannot use a ultrabay batt actually, it has no connector in the ultrabay for one. They can use a 9 cell Slice battery that uses the Dock connector, the 15" series too.

Re: T420 - Where is the cooling fan intake?

The fan intakes air through many little vents on the bottom of the laptop, all those little slitted grilles with or without meshes you see on the bottom of various Thinkpads are the intakes. The benefit is air flowing over planar components and cooling any hot spots. The large vents with visible cop...

Re: SSD in an X60s - which model will work ?

I replaced the C300 in my X60s with a 7200 rpm HDD and the only diffierence is it takes 10-20 seconds longer to bootup. The desktop / UI / browsing performance is the same. The problem with using the X60s effectively is its battery life is very poor even with the 8 cell, and any new old stock 8 cell...

I had a Micron C300 (SATA 2) 128gb in my X60s for awhile but it was overkill for the machine which is limited to SATA 1 and the Core Duo is very slow.

Re: Is it a stupid idea to attach small copper heat sinks to T61 heat sink ?

IIRC in T61 nVidia models, there's a thermal pad between the GPU and the heatsink. Some guys replace the thermal pad with a copper shim (a small piece of copper sheet) of the same thickness; others bend the heatpipe so the heatsink sits lower and contacts the GPU directly, without need for a therma...

Buy expresscard SDXC adapter. There is an OEM Lenovo one used in T410s/T420s/T430s 34mm with a bevel that fits fine. You need to disable some power saving thing in the BIOS before it will work reliably in Windows.

Re: Motherboard transplant on T410S - can I use faster CPU?

The heatsink design is the same across all T410s as far as I'm aware, except for Nvidia models which would get an extra heatpipe for the DGPU. If just the CPU is changing speed, yeah, no problem. Make sure the fan is clean and you use apply good thermal paste in a good way. There should be no heatin...

If you're looking for a nice thin'n'light classic Thinkpad that can handle modern tasks... you should skip T400s and T410s for having sucky screens and bad battery life too.
