Re: R500 screen dim at start-up
i want to say this is simply the nature of the incandescent backlighting that R500 use. it’s like the same technology as a fluorescent lamp, it has a warm-up time. they do wear with usage, it’s normal. the LCD is replaceable. virtually all R500 were sold with a cable that only supports the economy-t...

I Found A Z61t With A Working Battery
Lo and behold, it's somehow still alive after 19 years and 869 cycles. https://i.imgur.com/DCYUUOel.jpeg Laptop seems to work alright running W7 Ult x32 on the T2300, 2GB RAM, and 500GB HDD it came to me with. All I've done is install W7 (seller had W10 on it) and flash a modified BIOS and type "slm...

Re: T420 cooling system
I never had success modifying T420 or T430 heatsinks for use with the 45W quads. If it was a T430 I’d suggest the 3612QM or 3632QM which are deliberately underpowered and rated at 35W. For T420 in my experience it was better to stick with the basic i5. They are not slow.

Re: R500 onboard diagnostics
If you press Esc at the ThinkPad Splashscreen it will show some useless info. Within the BIOS (press F12 at the Splashscreen) there is a tool to check the Hard drive for errors. That’s it for R500. Possibly tell more about the issues it’s having and someone might know something helpful.

my oldie R60 has no issue running 2048x1536 on gma 950. IBM was pairing 1600x1200 with Pentium IIIs. HD3000 is a lot better.

R60 has a different case than T60, a W500 heatsink wont fit.

you would need the ATI heatsink. That is such a bummer.
After all this, even tho you love the laptop, please compare the price against replacing the laptop or taking no further action.

aliexpress may have cheaper batteries than amazon. they all come from china but if you buy from ali you skip paying for amazon’s overhead and real estate tax of the domestic distribution centers.

another X270, they surely haven’t gone up in value. Yoga 260, 370, L380, L390, L13 may be other contenders. these machines retain absolutely no value and the fair price is the cost of shipping it around + markup.

Wear and tear is normal especially on a 14 year old laptop. If it was mine id peel it off all the way.

Re: The "final" W7 ThinkPad ?
Skylake was the last officially supported by Lenovo, so P70, P50, T470, T25 … I was able to make W7 work on P71 (Kaby Lake) but lack of DX12 and TB3 support undermined my interest in casual rendering, so to this day it’s ran 10. Some folks have made W7 work on T480 and other newer chipsets but ymmv.

i would hunt ebay for the part or for a complete laptop "for-parts". alternatively post a WTB on the forum marketplace, someone may offer you a good deal.

Re: Suggestions on Maxxing out a X220 in 2025
at this point there’s little performance ROI doing anything extravagant. A large page file on an SSD obviates massive amounts of RAM. web browsing and office work, even video rendering can be done just fine on a dual core, with Sandy Bridge 2c4t being some of the best mobile dual cores of history. f...

utilizing the PC Card slot with a CF card adapter may be an alternative for expanding storage. with storage having gotten so cheap the SATA bay is in most situations generous enough.

Re: Is CPU Upgrade on x230t Worth It Performance-Wise?
the CPU is BGA soldered to the board. going from i5 dual core to i7 dual core is not worth it. going to i7 quad core may be worth it if you're going to run CPU-intensive software the likes of rendering, compiling, etc.. on your X230T, since it'll get the jobs done a little faster with more cores/thr...

There’s an even bigger hole on the opposite side of the laptop, with what looks like fan blades behind it.

15”-16.9” has been the more popular screen size in laptops market overall. what makes X1 Carbon Gen 4 so odd is that it is actually a X1 Yoga Gen 1 convertible just with a regular hinge sold as a laptop. Re: t43 1871 - IDE / m2 adapter.
For my T43 fling I wound up running IDE HDD and putting an NVME SSD in the expresscard slot, told OS to use it as RAM/pagefile. Expresscard is marginally faster than SATA1 and this mooted the 2GB RAM limit as well. I do the same thing on my T60/R60 offloading the page-file to a secondary NVME SSD an...

P8400 is fine, they are low energy usage and by virtue of the low clock they are very low temp especially under the beefy T500 heatsink. i have never noticed a meaningful speed difference between different Socket P Core 2 CPUs in web browsing and office work, but since you mention video work, you ac...
