Re: R61i (8932-AEG Frankenpad) memory speed, Bluetooth and LCD

The 15.0" R61i has the best screen options -- SXGA+, UXGA and QXGA flexviews (IPS). You may be able to get used instances of the first two relatively cheaply. It is not the screen bezel plastic breaking that is the problem, but the hinge that has broken. That can either be fixed by the judicious use...

Re: WTB: X61 T9300/T9500 motherboard or X62/X63 motherboard (UK)

If you were to OC the T9300 like that it would run at 3.3GHz with a 6M cache, it is expecting a bit much given the X61 form factor. Without any mod it is better than the T8100 overclocked, it has double the cache and both cores can run at 2.7GHz (dual-IDA) and there are no complications with overclo...

Re: Question about W701 GPU upgrade-ability

Well done. It is not (currently) how I use my W701 or others, so I can only proffer some vague recollections. There are some ways of getting a better than x1 PCIe connection that the eGPU crowd know about. The "DIY eGPU experiences" thread on notebookreview.com would be a good place to start. From m...

Re: Question about W701 GPU upgrade-ability

There are four NVIDIA VBIOSes, two each for the FX 2800M and FX 3800M, and no others. These are the VBIOS version numbers, one of them will correspond to your NVIDIA graphics card when you check it from your OS: 62.92.A0.00.09 62.92.A0.00.0A 62.92.B5.00.0C 62.92.B5.00.0D Here is the informative post...

In case you wonder, the panel is by the chinese company TCL. Do you know which panel exactly or any other details? Probably eDP, but what B/L arrangement, etc? A datasheet would be useful. Unfortunately even knowing the panel model may not make obtaining the panel or its datasheet possible, as is t...

Re: Lenovo has *FINALLY* returned to 16:10

Resolution is more important that aspect ratio. Higher resolution can make a lower aspect ratio screen more usable, it does not alter the deficiencies of 16:9 relative to the higher aspect ratios. You can calculate the ratio of screen area to lid area (take a look at the X61), the horizontal screen...

This, just flash the X61 Middleton BIOS.
Research the topic in this sub-forum, the SXGA+ is not just a drop-in replacement.

Re: Still possible to find a 1400x1050 T61p?

Multiple shader and core frequencies are set in the VBIOS, largely accounting for the performance difference wrt the two 14.1" NVIDIA chipped boards and is the reason you can overclock the NVS 140M more.

Re: Still possible to find a 1400x1050 T61p?

Both the 14.1" board VRAM amount and bus width are half that of the 15.4" T61p board so the performance suffers in comparison despite both having a Quadro FX 570M and the same model designation. They do however share the same VBIOS, largely accounting for the improved performance over the similarly ...

Thank you for this excellent series of posts. Do you know of any flush-mount USB-based expresscard USB 2.0 cards? I really hope that it is a revised nVidia board that it got replaced with. Did the T61 have revised boards from 2010?
You can't infer the graphics chip date from the BIOS date, for example you can flash a 2010-dated BIOS on 2007-dated T61.

Re: Just got a T61 with nVidia Quadro NVS 140m!

If you remove the battery you can usually see the planar FRU which conveys a lot of information, including a dating range. However this is likely a warranty replacement board and it may have a good chip independently of any other indicators besides the chip date.

Re: Just got a T61 with nVidia Quadro NVS 140m!

Run "lspci" in a linux shell, it'll tell you which nvidia graphics chip you have, if any. It won't of course date it, that you physically check once you've established you have one.

The IPS screens were only used in tablets and as such are not drop in replacements -- (1) the pinouts are different, thus requiring either an adapter cable or modifying the LVDS cable, (2) the attachment points are different, thus requiring the removal of eyelets using a rotary tool, (3) have a glas...

Re: Bios for T61 with intel gpu for 1066fsb

The middleton BIOSes are dual IDA enabled , which is just a pointed way of stating that the EIST LOCK bit, MSR 0x1a0 bit 20:20 is unset. IDA is the C2D-era intel term for turbo boost technology, where if one CPU core is idle the other can overclock by a multiplier or half a multiplier depending on C...

Replace the previous CPU, flash middleton's BIOS, try using throttlestop. If the dual IDA option is still greyed out the problem is more likely to lie with you than the highsun BIOS.

You can research using dual IDA to take it up to 2.3 GHz, you can't generally overclock this CPU since it does not have an unlocked multiplier like the X9100.
