I think the motherboard can be removed without having to take out the hinges/lid. It's not per the HMM, but I recall doing it.
This, just be sure to position the lid before removing the keyboard bezel or your chances of breaking the structure frame near the side fan exhaust will be higher.

Re: T61p with BIOS 2.30 - still worth going Middleton?

First convince yourself you can flash just the BIOS (*.fl1 file) using phlash16 for the middleton 2.29 BIOS. Then flash the 2.30 BIOS, check your issues, then revert to the middleton BIOS. If it does fix what you want, you can induce someone to mod the 2.30 BIOS for you.

Re: R61 BIOS recovery - how to?

First thing I'd do is check your ports, especially the USB ports -- make sure the plastic tongue is not broken off and shorting the contacts. I'd have more confidence in your answer if you include the model portion of the machine-type and model number, i.e. the 3 characters after the 7735, but you'l...

Don't state that the fault is with the inverter if you just think that's the case. It may be the backlight, which many members are incapable of replacing (without replacing the entire LCD unit) in contrast to the inverter.

Welcome to the forum. What is the machine type and model number? This is on the big barcoded sticker on the base of the R61. Does the BIOS screen display on power on? Did the repair shop flash the BIOS and not switch it on? How did the repair shop flash the BIOS? Did you make a note of what BIOS ver...

Re: Options for mini PCI slot in X61

That's USB 2 though, which is why you can boot from it. If you used USB 3 via the PCIe lanes booting from it would not be possible.
You can use it to replace the cardbus slot with an expresscard one, but it is not straightforward.

Well done.
It is not a firewire port on the RHS but a place to attach a lock.
With your R61 planar the problem is more likely to be the keyboard connector on the planar than the EC, but you can dump the firmware and examine it.

There is no need to "update" (they are version control numbers for firmware for different machines) the EC firmware. I've just left the latest official release in place on several of these without issue. This is the first time I hear of this problem, so would not say it is prevalent in the R61. Use ...

Re: 14.1 4:3 T61 mobo into 14.1 4:3 T60?

I also suggest getting a 14.1" T61 if possible, because the same electronics will run noticeably cooler in the T61. I forgot why, is it because there are some extra ventilation holes in the T61 base? The air flow is dramatically improved but the holes are the only aspect that is easily visilble. Th...

Re: FrankenPad R61i

Are you sure you have a X9100 rather than a X9000? If it's an X9100 you either have to pinmod and thus underclock it or do the 1066 MHz FSB mod. With other CPUs of that generation, such as the T9900, you'd have to mod the BIOS too, but not with that extreme CPU (the overwhelmingly more common C0-ste...

This is the frankenpad Lenovo built. Essentially it is like the T601 frankenpad with Intel graphics but in an R60 shell. For those sensitive to it, even though it uses the same keyboard as the T60/1, the keyboard seems even better because of what's beneath it. Just like a boxer is happier typing on ...

The switchable graphics is plausible since in that generation only the R500 and W700(ds) have a single BIOS update. The W700 definitely does not have integrated graphics and my R500's with discrete graphics do not have integrated graphics as an option. I searched through the BIOS code strings since ...

Re: The Uncommon LED-backlit T500

I had a look at the BIOS upgrades for the T500 and found that it's TP-6F/7V with latest BIOS versions (that I could find) 3.18/3.20. If you run dmidecode right at the top of the output you'll get your BIOS version, and it should start with either 6F or 7V. The R400 and T400 also have these dual BIOS...

Re: The Uncommon LED-backlit T500

What is interesting, assuming this uses the same BIOS update as the CCFL ones, is that there must be a way of identifying the panel (so EDID, presumably) and then selecting the appropriate dimming regime since the same incremental adjustments will not be appropriate for the different backlights. Re: 14.1 4:3 T61 mobo into 14.1 4:3 T60?

Welcome to the forum. The 14.1" T60 mobo, when extended with a interposer card which extends the ultrabay connectors, is exactly the same mobo which is used in the 15.0" T60. Therefore you can refer to the frankenpad guides in this forum where the 14.1" 4:3 T61 planar is shoehorned into a 15.0" T60,...

Re: Theoretical mod to get 800mhz FSB cpus to work in a T60

Having the CPU microcode is necessary but insuffient for supporting the CPU, the 15.0" R61 not being able to run a Penryn CPU with it's correct (7Q) BIOS (even with the microcode added) being a case in point. Fat chance of this proposed mod booting.

Welcome to the forum!
You don't need to flash the Middleton BIOS to do those things you've listed, except probably you'll have to press the ESC key on startup if you put in a penryn CPU. The charged battery requirement is a safety measure, if you overide it take precautions.

Re: Need help: X61 bricked from BIOS and ECP version mismatch

It is not enough to flash Middleton's SXGA+ BIOS. If you then just put in the SXGA+ screen you could brick your planar, the pimout is different and you require an adapter of one form or another (check the pinouts to confirm). If that's what you've done flashing the BIOS won't help.

The W701 can have 3 drives. I would also try and run anaconda in text mode, probably achieved by specifying "text" somewhere as the next line of attack if nomodetest does not work. Interestingly the W701 BIOS does not let you choose the default primary video device but the W700 does (Config -> Display -> Default Primary Video ...
