Re: Which version of Linux to install?

the choices are mind boggling I prefer Stable kernels (and Stable apps) hence I use Debian Stretch with 4.9.0-3-amd64. It may not support bleeding some edge hardware, but I have not had that event. Debian Jesse uses 3.16 but it is also Stable. for imaging and partitioning I use GParted https://gpart...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

Just finished uploading the new Window Maker Live release 0.95.7-4. Fetch it while it is still hot: sourceforge.net/projects/wmlive/files/wmlive_0.95.7-4/ A proper official release announcement will follow once i find some time for it. I appreciate your ambition. I am not sure I understand what you...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

Looks very interesting. I will probably try it soon. (don't forget to update your Distro Watch listing) Please be patient still and wait for the upcoming new version 0.95.7-4. There are many little enhancements (UEFI support, expert installer mode, etc.) that make it worth the wait. OK, I will wait...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

On Thinkpads that aren't the newer models I use Debian simply because I've been using it for 10 years or so. On bleeding edge hardware (which I don't have) I'll probably try Arch, though it might be too much for beginners. the main problem most people have with Arch is installing it. Feliz is a gre...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

I used LMDE Mate until the first of May when updates Borked it bad.
Now using SolydX with Mate desktop, Debian Stretch based.
Very responsive, no problems, nice features but not bloated.

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

I still use Mint. I think I have an older version 17.1 I like Linux. For security I much prefer Debian or LMDE or SolydM my new daily driver is SolydX with Mate desktop. Linux Mint gave me problems, after years of LMDE we got a bad update that is still not fixed .... Migration is a chore, but such ...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

Everything you read is an Opinion. I love conspiracy theories, but critical thinking and logic are required. Re: Linux Mint The who, what, and where of this event is hotly disputed. Many writers/posters say things that conflict with the others. It is difficult to weed thru it all and come up with y...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

I hope everyone who has been recommending Linux Mint does a double-take after their most recent hack. That distribution has always been notoriously flimsy when it comes to security. Their most recent hack was due to an insecure Wordpress plugin. My god, who does that anymore? And would you really t...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

I would recommend Linux Mint Debian (LMDE). Easy to use, fast, full of features, and more stable than regular Linux Mint or Ubuntu releases. I am running Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa"... is this different than LMDE? If so how would I go about trying LMDE? Yes, Rosa is quite different than LMDE. Rosa, and ...

Re: Cloning XP To Larger HD With Dual-Boot Partitions

off topic just a little: I ran onto this http://wiki.minix3.org/doku.php?id=usersguide:diskpartitions It is a little dated and the second half it pointed specifically to Minix3, but it explains a bit about how partitioning is universal, mostly a hardware configuration issue. I really does not matter...

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

I would recommend Linux Mint Debian (LMDE). Easy to use, fast, full of features, and more stable than regular Linux Mint or Ubuntu releases. I agree. It works great on all of my T61s and on other newer machines. I do not like Cinnamon flavor, but some love it. LMDE Mate is rock solid. That said I m...

Re: Cloning XP To Larger HD With Dual-Boot Partitions

since you are familiar with Gparted, use that. it has everything you need. 1. attach both drives to the same computer 2. boot with a live CD/USB that has Gparted (the Mint ones all do) using Gparted: 3. create a new partition on the target drive that is the same size or larger than the one you want ...

Re: Your Favorite Desktop Environments

Mate ... I use it for all the distros I use. Primarily Debian based, some Arch based. I got my feet wet with Gnome2. I do try the other desktops, but Mate fits me and my work style. I put LMDE Mate on my wife's T61 a year or two ago, she is fine with it. (she not a power user, she cares not a whit.....

Re: Your Favorite Desktop Environments

I went to Mate after Gnome 2 was pulled out from under our feet. (still annoyed with that). It took a couple years to mature but I think it is 100% now. Mint adds a lot of refinement to both the 17x and LMDE versions. tried to be open minded but Gnome 3 is a big disappointment to me. Cinnamon is bui...

Re: T61 and non-brand memory

I have been told the T61 will accept 8GB. I have a couple 8GB chips from a defunct laptop. Question: do ram chips need to be in pairs or can I use just one? thanks I don't ever recal seeing 8gb ddr2 dimms for laptops. Those 2 8gb sticks are almost certainly ddr3 modules. They will not work in a T61...

Re: T61 and non-brand memory

I changed from 2x1GB chips to 2x2GB chips on one of my T61s and the difference was dramatic.
now all three have 4GB, but all are 2x2GB

Re: 2504 Dock for T61 ... hardware fault?

Is there a setting in the BIOS to disable legacy devices (parallel/serial port) on the mini-dock? This is not an advertisement! I just spotted this... Taurinus X200. it is some sort of Thinkpad with Trisquel GNU/Linux preinstalled. https://shop.libiquity.com/product/taurinus-x200 Is this a viable machine? Is the pricing out of line?
