Re: X200 - ThinkLight not working using Win 10 - faulty?

Any views on whether the ThinkLight LED is dead OR do I need to install the official Lenovo driver for the X200 ThinkLight rather than relying on the built in Windows 10 Pro drivers?. Should I get some indication on the screen when I press Fn PgUp?? I don't believe you need any drivers for that to ...

Re: R51 Motherboard Swap?

You'd also need a new CPU, a new fan and new RAM with that, but the rest of R51 you can reuse. However, you are still limited to max. 2GB RAM. Uh I believe that is not true as the PCMCIA cage between T42 and T43 is completely different, and T42 cage is completely electrically compatible with R51. U...

Re: T430 can’t POST after RAM upgrade WARNING PICS

It's the chip and rank configurations for the RAM stick I believe, it determines how many chips you have that forms in total 8GB on your stick, and whether it is one sided or two sided mounted on the PCB. You should only use 2Rx8 ones as that was the only configuration that the chipset is designed t...

Re: WTB: A31p system board

You have a A31p board that's shorted? Like is it the kind that's shorted and shows no signs of life or semi-shorted, powers on but overloads the power supply? Interestingly enough I have a parts A31p motherboard sitting around, presumably with a defective clock generator because last time I run that...

when you insert the RAM at an angle, you should in most cases (other than some extremely worn ram slots) feel a click that the ram stick goes in, before you push the ram stick down and feel another click. Also I don't recommend getting Chinese RAM for these machines as there are just far too many ma...

Re: Thinkpad 600 fan question

If you are concerned, you can try updating the BIOS to the latest version and see if the BIOS now has better fan controls in Windows 98. You see, all MMC card CPU's like the one in the regular 600 don't really exhibit enough heat for the fan to actually be required to spin, but they have fans in the...

I believe these older models simply use thermal pads instead. Replacing it with paste means you need a copper shim of the right height and then slam thermal paste on both sides. That said I don't know if you will see any measurable difference because the real thermal bottleneck on these come from th...

I believe your RAM is just low quality at this point. It claims to be 2Rx4 while it clearly does not look like 2Rx4 to me. I know you are trying to save up because the 8GB sticks are ridiculously expensive right now on the height of the pandemic. Maybe try looking for good branded second hand option...

If you use R40 in Windows 7, make sure you are using either a modded version of driver or a driver designed for Radeon 9000. AFAIK, a standard mobility Radeon 7500 driver causes bluescreen in Windows 7 whenever certain shadows are drawn, and a standard mobility Radeon 7000 driver will give you lots ...

I suppose the bigger downside for T9600 is a slight reduction in battery life due to higher tdp

The CPU upgrade to T9600 is just drop-in upgrade on these, I don't believe any BIOS updates are required. The fastest it supports is T9900 but those go for insane amounts of money and no one should buy one at those prices, so T9600 is kinda the sweet spot. While cloning the current installation of W...

If you put a board into the 15" chassis though, be mindful of an extender that goes in the ultrabay or your motherboard connectors won't reach the ultrabay. Also note while the keyboards look identical on the 14.1" and 15" machines they are not interchangable unless you rip the membrane and all the ...

Also one more thought, have you attempted disabling the patches for Spectre and Meltdown if you don't mind the decrease in security? It is entirely possible those patches slow your computer down while a Core 2 duo is not even prone to Spectre in the first place AFAIK. It is entirely possible those p...
