Re: DEX dock from an old Thinkpad

It sounds cool, but if you think of it you might just as well use a working ThinkPad along with your Huawei device and probably do software mirroring if you really want your phone screen to be on your laptop.

Re: Laptop collectors: if you're allowed to collect just one laptop, which one would it be?

I even wonder what one does with a T601. I built one to see if it's still viable as a work machine, but it's hardly still viable as a 'simple task' machine. Even with an SSD, Win10 is dreadfully slow, and most modern web pages filled with scripts lag the system (even gmail is laggy), and it can har...

You have to jumpstart the pack.

Oh okay this makes sense, but would that jump start apply to all batteries since mine is not a T4x battery (though I will do a rebuild of that too sometime)

Re: IBM Thinkpad Battery Re-Celling Battery Rebuild Tutorial

At least the T4x/R5x series battery packs need to be reprogrammed, but laptop battery packs whose respective models are from 2002 and earlier can probably be rebuilt easily. The newest laptop I was able to rebuild a battery in is a Compaq Evo N410c, which is from around 2002 or so. I did get someon...

Re: A31p desirability?

Some of the younger members don't want anything other than Windows 7 which is still a great OS despite it being not optimum on older hardware. They always want internet access despite the usage being problematic. Many younger members probably have barely used Win 98 or 2000 and would have limited e...

Re: My old ThinkPads degrading

Surprise that these old plastic parts are failing this early. Wonder if the cleaning product and UV light over the years are taking a toll on the plastic and is making it brittle? It depends on what model of ThinkPads you are talking about. Generally the cheaper I series ones have weaker plastic th...

Re: A31p desirability?

In my book, the absolute lowest-powered ThinkPad to run W7 without me wanting to put a fist through its screen every 15 seconds - I'm talking about web browsing, not typewriter application - would be a T42 with ATi 9600 GPU. To be fair my copy of Windows 7 SP1 takes about 1 minute to boot with a de...

Re: A31p desirability?

What OS do you have on the A30? Just wondering :D You cannot believe me, but I run Windows 7 SP1 on it (with Windows Update disabled). I initially did that to the 3 ThinkPads from my school back then (A30, T22, T23 and a Dell Inspiron 2650) in hope of bringing something modern and familiar to every...

Re: A31p desirability?

I thought the ribs on my A31p are stick on / decorative. :o I thought of the same when I first saw my dad's ThinkPad T43 back in 2005. Only to know that part a decade later. My A30 came without them, and it took me some salvaging to swap the lids with a A31p unit with it and sold the A31p with cust...

Right now I'm looking for machines whose names are prefixed with the letter T followed by the numeral 4, followed by either a 2 or a 3 and, optionally, the 'p' designation. I also have a T22 if that's something you want. Everything works fine except that the laptop requires a push-inward for the li...

Re: A31p desirability?

I would *presume* that a fully working, top-shelf (factory wi-fi and BT) A30p would be as desirable as a comparable A31p, but really have no data to back that claim up. TBT, I can't even recall when I last saw a working A30p, but it was a long time ago. Well I salvaged an A30 for free, in excellent...

Re: A31p desirability?

Does the A30p receive similar levels of desirability, since A30p has a more practical Pentium III processor that wears components much less than P4-M, and that nearly everything else are the same? I will experiment with these settings. I am not on the T42 15in at present. I also see there is an Advanced tab with some settings. This probably could have been helpful on that 15 inch ThinkPad over the last 8 years, I might have used it more. I lowered the screen brightness on the 15 inch as much...

Is there any freaky special way for this mod or am I just ignorant enough to use T43p UXGA tape + led-modded UXGA from T60? As far as I know of, the LED mod doesn't work all that well on T4x series. Also, as for the problem of large (30GB or higher) hard drive not recognised, make sure that the system partition is less than 8GB or something (and probably better luck with FAT32 than NTFS), and then it boots just fine. This is very interesting, is there any way for me to get and older version of Win10 (pre Anniversary) as a boot image or DVD? Is there anyone else here whom have done a LCD cable mod to change screen resolutions on the T4x and R5x computers? Well instead of fiddling around with EDID stuff, you might as well get an IPS panel for the T60 if you have the 15" version.
