Re: Thinkpad 600 resurrection

The 700ED is no longer working, and my TP600 has a Ultrabay 2000 DVD-ROM drive that is new enough to have the correct region, so I am fine now.

Also, I forgot to say that: T/A20-22 suffer from some kind of chipset failure after prolonged use. A3x suffer from the Radeon chip not heatsinked thus desolders after time, tucking thick thermal compound between the chip and the heatsink may help prolong the lifespan. A31/T30 suffer from capacitor f...

Re: Thinking about buying a T42

If you want the best Windows 98 experience, get the A3x series or T2x/3x series.
T42 works in Windows 98, but not with optimal performance, since you would end up with some sketchy drivers for the mobility Radeon 7500 and 9000, and almost non-working drivers for 9600 or FireGL T2.

Re: Thinkpad 600 resurrection

Apologies for this untimely experiment, but I have now tried WinDVD 4 and 5 under Windows XP XP3 (debloated, and with no Windows Updates) with default drivers on my TP600 to play back a DVD (720x480) disc. While it does play and the audio and video are in sync, the video is stuttery and blurry, and ...

Re: Thinkpad A31p Backlight Outage

Efficiently replacing the backlight of those UXGA panels without side effects took me like 4 tries to practice. It wasn't also helping very much that the leads on the replacement bulbs I had are too long and might short out if I don't bend them, and on top of that, my replacement bulbs are made from...

Well I happen to have a 770ED with a non-working power board. So if you so happened to see a working 770 with some other problems, I guess you can consider this.

It was running Windows 98SE at the time, and I think I was using CyberLink PowerDVD (whatever version came in the package with the DVD drive when I'd bought it a week or two earlier. Maybe the 300MHz CPU module has more cache memory than the 266, and it made the difference? Now that I have time, I ...

Re: "Time travel tools" The 2001 IBM ThinkPad T22 (25+ photos)

Yes I've had that experience with mine before, though I feel like it depreciates much much faster if you keep draining it below 10% or so. I've done that on my Ultrabay battery, thanks to IBM's logic of draining it to 0% before switching to the main battery, and those batteries now only hold around ...

From my experience with 4GB RAM on x86 (non-x64) computers, you get around 3.25-3.5 GB of RAM that is available to use. Unless you have the Core 2 Duo variant of the T60, you cannot run x64 anyways

Re: WTB: T60 SXGA Cable for 14" model.

T60 cables do not have a resolution sensitivity as far as I know of, since the resolution is stored in the EDID chip, not by the cable. So a XGA cable works fine too as long as it is also for 14"

Re: Thinkpad 600 resurrection

Not true at all - 300MHz should be fine for DVD playback. Really? Right now with the 266mhz PII it couldn't even play back 360p properly (only the MPEG-1 coded 360p videos play fine, and even then it could only do it at 16bit colour). How the heck does a 300mhz PII do DVD playback while it has abso...

Re: I bought a locked TP-R40 ? now what ?

There are late R40 models that had motherboards supporting Pentium M processors which ran cooler than a Mobile Pentium 4-M-equipped R40, so that got me into thinking about the worthiness of it. Thing is, are you in any way affected by the fan noise and heat produced by a Mobile Pentium 4-M? in my e...

I now have 2- 24x CD drives ..and 3x Floppy drives. If you have Ultrabay 2000 DVD drives lying around, you can mount those into Ultraslimbay by exchanging the drive rail. You can even get CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive in this way and it indeed works in Windows. Since you have the 600X, might as well tu...

Assuming you buy a non-OEM 16:10 15" IPS display off Aliexpress, what's the relation of difficulty compared to just adapting a T510 display (the whole screen and case)? It's smaller. T500 has a 15.4" display in 16:10, while the T510 has a 15.6" display in 16:9. According to my math, the chassis of ...

Using it for school? You'd probably really like an SSD and a wifi card there.. I was thinking of getting one myself for that exact purpose, but I'm holding it off for now -- I wonder if 240Z XGA will fit in regular 240. As far as resolution goes, I'd be happy if you could stick a 16:10 panel there,...
