Re: ThinkPad T43 fan lubrication

Well the point is to fix the problem without spending a cent (well I technically did spent a cent worth of olive oil but still). I could've bought another fan assembly as a whole and spend like $20, but then there will still come a time where I will need that lubrication again as all bearings will a...

That's good, because that is the LTSC, supported until 2026. 8) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_version_history Hmm how are you gonna use LTSC? Re: IBM's ThinkPad T42 LCD - A Blast from the Past

What's the newest version of Win10 that can work on a T43? If it's too old and not one of the long-term service branches, then its support may have already ended, or will end before 2020... The newest version that works perfectly on a ThinkPad R52/T43/p ATi variant is 10.0.14393 (The first annivers...

Re: IBM's ThinkPad T42 LCD - A Blast from the Past

So when Win7 support ends in early 2020, we will then... Well then that means T42 and below will be stuck with an unsupported version of Windows or switched to linux, and T43 (ATI based) and above can still live with Windows 10 for a little bit longer since T43 is stuck on an older version of Windo...

ThinkPad T43 fan lubrication

Have anyone tried lubricating the fan of a T43 that makes those rattling noise before? I was originally going to replace two fans of mine that was quite noisy but then I thought it is a lost cause anyways so I popped the copper part out of the fan with two screw drivers, and then turns out the fan b...

I stand corrected. The previous T2x models did not have the CDC, at least my work-issued T20 didn't. T20-T22 did not have a CDC slot so it is an Ethernet combo card with modem. And no for those models plugging a wireless card doesn't work properly at least from my experience. T23 has a CDC slot wit...

I use a PCMCIA/PC Card WiFi adapter in my T23. That way I am not using one of the 2 USB ports, and PC Card as stated is fast enough. And the PC Card WiFi adapters are pretty cheap now. The only con is that I have to remove the card when traveling, as it sticks out the side of the computer, just ask...

I'm a "glossy" person, and after looking "forever", found an AUO B156HW01 V.7 in China (checked the specs in www.panelook.com). The colors and contrast are brilliant, if you don;t mind the reflections. For those AUO panels, the number for V.x is the one that indicates whether the panel is matte or ...

If it won't, I'd rather not break the one I have as new identical replacements (i.e. not the T43 model heatsinks) are very difficult to find and expensive. Why do you not want the T43 model heatsinks again? I know they spin faster and are louder, but they also should have better cooling capacities ...

For the R40, I used a B1 stepping, Pentium M 765 (SL7V3). The CPUID signature of this processor is 6D6, and should still use the microcode that I have also added into the R40's BIOS image. Unfortunately, it did not boot up. The same LEDs light up, the fan spins up, but it does not POST and proceeds...

I don't think that's right for the 600X. I'm pretty sure I had a Hitachi 160GB drive in mine, which was the largest PATA drive available at the time I was last using it. I think I had to make sure that no single partition was larger than 128GB, but I don't think there is a problem structurally acce...

If anything it seems to be the opposite...the longer it sits in between attempts, the more likely it is to power on. I meant pressing the power button like 5 times in 1 second works better here. Pressing the button once and the backlight immediately comes on (IPS stays black, TFT turns white), stat...

Approximately 1 in every 30 attempts to power it on now will successfully power on, POST, and then begin loading the OS, except it will lock up or BSOD during the process with a different error each time, and the HDD LED will get stuck blinking in a very specific pattern. Does pressing power button...

Re: PAE/NX CPU swap in T42P (2373-HTU)

Good idea, but why pick the fan from the T43? The only advantage it has in comparison to the T42's fan, is a higher maximum fan speed and a higher cubic-feet-per-minute rating. Well and it also have the downside of being a lot noisier because it spins faster. Since the T4x series have their fans tu...

Re: PAE/NX CPU swap in T42P (2373-HTU)

I haven't tried 1607, but 1809 boots to an error screen after a fairly long timeout. IIRC it specifically mentioned PAE, and the issue goes as far back as Windows 8.x. No mods to the motherboard have been done yet aside from replacing the USB port. The CPU is the real thing holding me back, though....

I got the legacy Vista drivers working OK in Windows 7 after using a modded Mobility Modder. From what I understand those should also work in Windows 10. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I wound up needing to use a generic driver, though. Does your computer boot Windows 10 1607? You said you ...

Re: PAE/NX CPU swap in T42P (2373-HTU)

So the steps for swapping in a 533MHz CPU and running it at the intended speed seem to be: 1.) Bridge pins 54 (FS0) + 55 (FS1) on the ICS950810. This corresponds to the 133MHz on the table from the ICS950810 datasheet (see below). 2.) Optionally flash SPD of the RAM so it runs at a lower speed (whi...

Re: PAE/NX CPU swap in T42P (2373-HTU)

At this point I think replacing the motherboard with a T43p one makes more sense if you plan to do the BIOS mods anyways. But a T43p would only run Windows 10 1607 well. Older versions aren't as matured and newer versions have problems with the ATI Radeon drivers and DirectX 9.0, while the latest 2 ...

I even wonder what one does with a T601. I built one to see if it's still viable as a work machine, but it's hardly still viable as a 'simple task' machine. Even with an SSD, Win10 is dreadfully slow, and most modern web pages filled with scripts lag the system (even gmail is laggy), and it can har...

At least the T4x/R5x series battery packs need to be reprogrammed, but laptop battery packs whose respective models are from 2002 and earlier can probably be rebuilt easily.
