Re: Which ThinkPad gen suits best for Net/Free/OpenBSD?

The best Idea I've had in a while was to turn my FreeBSD based X61 with T7300 @ 2GHz and 4GB RAM into a dedicated .mp3 player. It has a tiny footprint, sits on a table in easy reach of my recliner and does nothing but play beautiful music for me. I never shut it down and it's at 178 days uptime. Th...

Linux Mint, Cinnamon edition or Linux Mint XFCE are your best bets for your machine. Try it on a live DVD.

Another thing which affects ThinkPad T510 used value, and makes them common. The T510 has sound issues on Linux Mint, and other Ubuntu based distros. T 410 and T 420 make superb machines for most *Nixes.

Until late this afternoon, a ThinkPad T 410 with Core i5 first generation was my main laptop. But running the latest Linux Mint Cinnamon 9.2. And did so just fine with 6 GB RAM. I am typing this post using the same operating system on a T 420 I just bought on eBay (sans battery and AC Charger, using...

Re: I wonder which is toughest... TP, Let's Note, or Sony VAIO

Panasonic Let's Note are business grade ToughBooks as far as the USA goes. Panasonic and TP are toughest. Sony VAIO is consumer grade and lesser build quality. Spastic me has good success with Panasonic and TP notebooks, and less success with modern VAIO machines past the early ones.

With all this new technology, why can't there be joysticks for an electric car, then disabled drivers can get by with one less set of adaptive equipment? Re: Thinkpad / Device for College

The question, then, is Yoga 260, X1 Yoga, or X220 / X1 Carbon, it seems. X220 make sense if you strongly prefer the 7-row keyboard layout only. Note that Windows 10 are not supported by Intel on X220 CPU/GPU generation (X230 is the oldest supported generation), you'll get Microsoft generic drivers ...

I run a T series as my main box for a very good reason over a cheaper model. The T series are better built, more durable than the cheaper lines. My old box is a T 410, and hope to get a T420 or possibly a X 201 (another good sturdy laptop). I have spasticity and muscles with a mind of their own. I a...

Re: Would you recommend a W530 in this day and age?

If a W520 came into my life cheap enough I could afford it, It would be a major upgrade to what I own now (a ThinkPad T410, and a X131e and an old Panasonic ToughBook CF 30). 6 pounds in my world is not bad. For 32 bit variants, Core 2 Duo OK, I'd go Core i3 or better for 64 bit, and 4 GB RAM or more as a better way to fly, meaning T410/T510 being good Windows 7 candidates (I run my Core i5 T410 with 4GB RAM on Zorin Core Linux 12 on it, it flies)

X 61 my favorite (4:3 classic era) ThinkPad as we knew them. In the Core i processor widescreen era, I'd put the T410/T510/W510 or T420/T520/W520 or the X210/X220 as favorite last of the line Real ThinkPads (though the newer keyboards are still better than most on the market)

Agreed. Many an HP ProBook is very good. Especially as used models. And the Dual Core Intel Celerons from 1.6 Ghz up are for most users, very capable for average computing needs. Re: Toshiba's PC business strategy for the future and what it means for us

Toshiba for me, is not true business class yet. Not rugged enough (I kill newer Porteges and Tecras too easily), and no next business day service on location. Be forewarned, I get better service and support out of HP ProBooks and Lenovo E series, small business line machines and the Dell Latitude E ...

Re: Nov. 2015: Consumer Reports survey finds Apple most reliable laptop brand

By consumer machine standards, Apple is really the best overall. And they are well built in that class, nicely styled, perform well for most needs. If I had to live with consumer grade machines, a MacBook Pro would likely be what I would run. Keep it very protected in a tough case, and all the Apple...

Re: Nov. 2015: Consumer Reports survey finds Apple most reliable laptop brand

Apple's idea of Pro is exact opposite of business class in the PC world. In the Apple World, there is no user easily serviceable, no accidental damage coverage, no next business day service which comes to you. And they're delicate creatures. My ThinkPad T 510's survived spastic cerebral palsied me m...

Asus also features for Americans, horrible bad tech support, depot service which is slow, often as not never repairs a machine correctly. And hard to get parts outside of warranty. Apple is also consumer grade. Which is a synonym for unreliable. And their obsession with thinness and styling, is degrading laptops. What part of frail do you not understand? Apple is delicate and frail. Want rugged and reliable, don't buy consumer, or gaming anything. If I can't kill it, you more ...

I would call Mint in the MATE edition a sensible choice. Ubuntu is another good friendly distro. That said, Mint in the MATE edition is what I keep coming back to every time. Works great for me, reliable, stable, and fast on my old ThinkPad T 510 with 3GB of RAM. I find it delightful in use.

I recommend not getting a Dell Studio. Too flimsy build quality. A Latitude E 5510 is a solid Dell Choice or better yet, hunt down a nice ThinkPad X220, T410/420, or T510/520.
