Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Impressive collection, congratulations this Japanese Thinkpad is very nice. I hope to post some photos in action soon. I have a small issue with it, when using Linux, I have the graphical desktop allright (aka Xserver), but the top 10-20px are corrupted. This is a challenge but I can post photos an...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Ah, so that's the game. We're not talking 30 machines indeed, I admit I did not expect being wrong about one order of magnitude. There are 188 lines here and 197 1s, so we're talking anywhere between 200 and 385 machines because, unfortunately, there's still ambiguity. I don't know if the occurrence...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

@axur-delmeria Do I look like I don't have the X220? :) (modded, but the same godlike keyboard...). Actually I believe in around 2018 I spilled beer on it (dead keyboard) and that let me justify the switch to the real deal Alps keyboard. Any X220 keyboard is great, but with Alps it's just otherwordl...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

I'm not too concerned with maxing it out. Once I have my OS loaded and some software onboard in Linux with this 755CE, I have 604kB free. 8mB of swap is taken. If I raised the RAM by 12mb, it would swap less. The CPU thing is indeed far less justified, and is mostly for fun. I don't expect any signi...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Epic fail. Got the RAM I bought for the machine from the US. I've waited like a month for this package. In short, the plan was to replace a 4mb sodimm with a 16mb. Those are 72-pin sodimm-s. The auction title and description stated that the sold item is "16MB 72-pin 60ns 3.3v 72pin SODIMM FPM". I'll...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Yes, sure. I just noticed my Linux attempts were a bit on the slow side on this 486DX4-100. Most likely, my software wasn't archaic enough - the kernel I ran (2.4.27) came out in 2004-5, so it's 10 years younger than the CPU. So, obviously, I just need to switch to an even more archaic, and I'm curr...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Concerning aggressive modding Can I replace the 486DX4-100 with the Am5x86 (or while we're at it, the Cyrix 5x86 )? I think Pentium OverDrive won't fit. I thought about a Pentium 75 but AFAIK they're different sockets. Haven't seen my 755CE's CPU yet, but I'm pretty sure it is a 486dx4-100 in a Sock...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Yes, it passes the RAM test all right. So, I found out that the CF->IDE adapter had a switched jumper (I played with it and forgot to put it back). Correcting it made the '174' disappear. Win95 still won't boot, this time its the "Disk I/O error; Replace the disk, and then press any key" message. To...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Interesting. I have installed Win95 (there are ISOs flying around archive.org, good times) on the CF card using a virtual machine. The Windows setup went normally, however it won't boot from the CF after installation. Says "While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You need to restart...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

No idea how to check that. Upon buying the CF->IDE adapter, I plugged it into the 755 (with a CF card, of course) and made a self-test in the BIOS, which didn't look to happy. It spat the error codes: DEV 017 ERR 01 FRU 6010 but as far as I can tell from the HMM, this means a hard disk problem and I...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

So, I noticed that the mwave modem/audio card isn't working neither in Win nor in Linux. That's quite odd. The MWave audio+modem device never had Linux drivers. The only way to make it work back then was to boot to DOS, load the mWave DOS driver, then use loadlin to jumpstart the Linux kernel. It's...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Got the CF-> IDE adapter working. Using a 4GB CF, I have Win+Linux moved to it from the IBM 810mb disk which had dual boot. Now, using the card, Windows95 won't boot, Linux works OK (I even have Xserver, albeit it still needs tuning). Would be a shame to loose W95 so I'm still on it. However, there'...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

As a follow-up to the post #16 on the HDD. To make a more practical Linux installation, I made a setup, wherein the 388mb attributed to Linux on the HDD do not host the whole system. Instead, the /usr, /var and /home directories are on the CF card. To explain for the Windows users, /usr and /var are...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

I've solved the Linux issue for HDD only. That is to say I can make a dual boot disk which will be okay both to run Win95 and a choice of Linux. But the IBM 810mb is way too small to make it practical. I have a few experiments to perform before giving up on the PCMCIA/CF based attempts though. One o...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Time for small updates. The laptop is still airgapped, no cigar with any connectivity. In this area, the only way I see is buying an expensive 3com so it's on hold. In the meantime, I bought a 4gb CF card with a pcmcia adapter. The goal, to remind, was to setup Linux on it, and then prioritize it in...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

I have located a 8mb RAM so-dimm RAM module on ebay. This could replace my (P/N: 59G3996) 4mb module, bringing the entire RAM to the sum of 32mb. I know this is the maximum value for the 755CE, however... Isn't anyone aware of any attempts to surpass this value? I mean, IBM is known to have claimed ...

ah okay, false alarm, the thing with pcmcia cf adapters looks better than expected. just bought this adapter: https://www.ebay.fr/itm/254898913273 and this card (i think 4gb seems safe, and will be 5x larger than the IBM hdd, nice): https://www.ebay.fr/itm/361908373235?var=631175570799 Made an idiot...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Hey evening_hunger Hello and thank you for your reply! ] I think all the drives you tried are way too large. The 755Ce is from '94. I don't know the max HDD it can take - tho I doubt it's much more than 4GB at the very high end (if even that high), so I'd try something a little more conservative fi...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

I bought 6 PCMCIA cards to be able to connect the machine to the internet. Unfortunately 4 of them were wasted money, as I had not yet understood which type they must be, they turned out to be too modern. Finally, I got one Ethernet card which fits (Hioki 9578) , but no drivers exist for it in this ...

Re: The official 755 Upgrade and general information Topic

I can rebuild batteries for the 360, 755, 760, 560 and 600 (all models I've successfully rebuilt batteries for, anyways). Obviously, newer stuff gets trickier. The other problem is the prices quoted from batteryrefill.com. Obviously, I'd like to make a little profit (like $20-30). The cost of each ...

Re: Just bought a Japanese 755CE

Yes, I'm gonna replace this HDD into a desktop-class external IDE enclosure which I just have handy here, and report back. Meanwhile, I went the other direction a bit, that is to say I tested a total of 3 different HDDs by sliding them into the 755CE (via its supplied IDE2"something" adapter). Here'...

Just bought a Japanese 755CE

OMG what a great machine. Also, buying anything in Japan which has a "junk" status there, pretty much guarantees that in the Western world it'll be like new. And it is, safe for the gluey paint covers, but I guess a 28yo machine has the right to it. The machine I received has 8Mb+approx 20Mb on a da...

Re: T30 - wont run on battery power

Hm, small update here. So I bought a new pack, a replacement of course. There are improvements, but some problems persist. So to begin with, the new pack is now recognized by the system correctly, even the Linux ACPI can talk to it. However, I am still suspicious, as I experience an issue similar to...

Re: T30 - wont run on battery power

Hi there, well, what happened is that after my last post, I tried to focus on the battery pack and repair anything I can inside the pack. I had moderate success, my pack now charges up to sth like 22% but won't budge above that. (it also won't report to Linux ACPI, so it's a mess, I use it in blind)...
