Lenovopad Problems

Bad news. It looks like W540s have the same issue that Y540s have with their screens: Basically, the lower the battery life gets and the more graphics power you use, the more the screen starts to flicker. See here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/screen-fickering-on-Y40-80-on-ba...

Re: Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

The manual does make it look easy to take apart, but I know from experience it's hard to follow manuals and they leave things out they expect you to know and a lot of time it's not easy. :P Is there a YouTube video or something showing the process?

Re: Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

Just got the computer in the mail today. It does have a clunkpad, even though the pictures made it appear otherwise. :(

Is replacing the clunkpad relatively easy? Do you have a tutorial (the post you linked just refers to finding drivers, it seems)? Any members nearby who could help me with it?

Re: Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

I just realized that computer doesn't come with a charger for some reason (guess it's stolen; they could afford to upgrade everything else to the max but not throw in the charger?). Would the charger to my E540 work on it, or do I need to buy another one?

Re: Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

Thanks for your advice. I decided I'll get the W540 linked. I want the better graphics card, mainly (it's not really a gaming card and games aren't really optimized for linux, so the more power the better). Thankfully, that particular W540 still has buttons for the trackpoint--which is all I'll use-...

Re: Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

W530 is 1 generation older than the E540. But I just saw this post about a very promising W540 : https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=128862 It needs its clunkpad replaced with the touchpad+buttons from a T450/T550. There are 2 touchpad versions around: Alps and Synaptics . Most people ...

Re: Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

Update: My current Thinkpad is a goner. One of the hinges is partially broken, and that's causing problems; when the computer is moved while on, it bluescreens. I was able to put up with it for awhile, but now it bluescreens even when not moved and I just don't want to put up with it anymore. I know...

Re: Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

The NVIDIA thing for Linux might be relatively alright these days - I was able to run a live USB of Fedora 27 on my Thinkpad T61p the other day. Of course, I can't guarantee much there. Yeah, I've been checking around and it looks like Nvidia is all right now; just it's hard to update drivers (whic...

Looking to get a "new" Thinkpad

A friend of mine will be getting a laptop soon. He doesn't like modern laptops that have terrible keyboards and trackpads. He also likes a decent amount of ports and CD drives. So he pretty much has to get an older computer. Right now, he's considering Thinkpads. Here's what he's looking for: Decent...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Right. But I don't think there's a point to 4K on laptop screens. See my last post. SXGA+, WSXGA+, UXGA and WUXGA scaled to native resolution are good for productivity on large enough displays, which for me is 13.5" and up. I had to Google what all those abbreviations stood for. I've always just ca...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

4k video and high resolution media is a large driver of high dpi and high resolution displays. Right. But I don't think there's a point to 4K on laptop screens. See my last post. Having greater pixels in general also attracts the average consumer more. Why? Because they think "more is better" (like...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Also, 12.85 inch screen is way too small for my taste. I felt the same about my 12.5" X220 Tablet display. Until I used a 12.1" X60. Even at XGA* resolution, the aspect ratio has such a huge impact on usability and productivity on smaller screens (< 14"). I always wondered why people like high-dpi ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Lenovo made a post on their ThinkPad blog with the title "It's About Time"! And the cover image was a Retro ThinkPad!... I hope the right half of that image wasn't the retro thinkpad, since it still has a 6 row keyboard. It looks much more like a T460s. Well, showing the two laptops side-by-side li...

Disc drive stopped working

The other night, when I was trying to read a CD, the drive just made a couple clicking sounds instead of reading the disc. I figured out what the problem was: The drive wouldn't spin evenly, and would spin slowly part-way, until it stopped. Today, it worked again, but it could stop at any moment unt...

Re: Is there a "hacker" or "computer repair" group near me?

So all Craigslist has is ads for places that do repair, and none of the 2600 meetings are near me (there are some a couple hours' drive from me, but they meet in public places like the food courts of malls anyway, and I have no idea how that would work). They both seemed like good ideas, but it look...

Re: Fingerprint scanner & Trackpad Linux Driver?

I heard about ThinkFinger, but I haven't figured out how to compile it. I'm undecided between Mint MATE and Ubuntu MATE.

I usually prefer a trackpoint, but it's useless without a right-click, and I really like its middle-click.

Is there a "hacker" or "computer repair" group near me?

I have an old Thinkpad that I want to fix, along with an old Apple Performa monitor. The latter sounds dangerous for me to fix alone, so I would need help. I'd like to learn how to fix things like this and would want someone to do it with. Is anyone a part of--or knows of--a group like this near (or...

Fingerprint scanner & Trackpad Linux Driver?

I have a Thinkpad Edged E540 that I'm thinking about installing Linux on. But one thing that I would want is support for its fingerprint scanner. It doesn't work natively, and I haven't found a place to get the driver yet. Does anyone here have experience getting it to work? Also, the trackpad doesn...

Re: Will one of these power adapters work with the 750?

Well the system board's the problem with the "new" one. But what's the problem with the old one? What does "basically it's the computer" mean? If it's the processor card o the DC/DC card, are those things that could be easily taken out of the "new" one?

The other one gets past the first part, beeps twice, and gives me a error that says 19990303 = Not OK and then an arrow pointing to an IBM manual.

Thanks for all the help troubleshooting by the way.

Nooo... :( How hard would it be to take the guts out of another Thinkpad 750 and put them in this one? (The other one's screen is shot. Or, would that one work with a VGA screen without having to go through a setup on its screen?)
