Re: G-series hard drive upgrade/replacement question

Thanks everyone! The one without the HDD fell through although there is a similar one being sold locally that is also in need of a HDD that I'll be taking a look at next week. But, I did run across this guy on the Bay of Evil. The seller claims to have installed an Nvidia card. I didn't think that w...

G-series hard drive upgrade/replacement question

Has anyone ever replaced the hard drive on a G40 or G41? I have a line on one (I can't tell which yet) and it seems to boot to bios and everything else looks fine from a distance, but no HD. Just wondering how hard it is with this particular model. Also, what is the largest size and type of HD that ...

Re: ThinkPads on the job

I still use my A30 occasionally to do typing at work. We have Dells at work with crappy keyboards and overly sensitive touchpads, so when I need to do some heavy laptop typing, I will sometimes bring out the Pad. It's gotten a raised eyebrow here and there from my students. They have no idea what a ...

Re: Getting the smell of ashtray off an ebay acquisition

Yup, happened to me. I am fortunate in having a covered balcony so I opened everything up - battery compartment, CD drives, everything - and just let it air out for a couple of weeks. I also cleaned it thoroughly and was able to get the odor manageable, but never completely gone. Wow, what a horrid ...

Looking for I2611 inverters

Evening! I have a couple or three 2611s of various marques and they all suffer from the dreaded I-Series dead screen. They boot, but the screen is dead so I'm thinking it's either the lamp or the inverter, probably the latter. Are there any sources out there for new inverters? Google hasn't been my ...

Re: Any interest in ZIP-drives and ZIP-disks?

I do have a couple of zip disks salvaged from my school just one year ago and do you know if they work in Windows 7? As far as I have tested floppy works in Windows 10 but idk for zip My Zip drives and disks (I LOVE 'EM!) work great in Win 7 and everything underneath that. When I tried them on my A...

Re: Got an IBM Aptiva 2168-A90

Oh, those pics bring back memories. That riser card always vexed me. My first "real" PC was a 2176-C65. I still regret getting rid of it. A 2176-C66 with a 166mhz Pentium from the Bay of Evil currently sits in my spare room, awaiting either a total rebuild or a super duper update like you are doing....

Re: Is the G40 An IBM or a Lenovo?

Are you sure they're G40's and not G400's? Nope, G40s. I make it a point to zoom in on the data stickers and such on the bottom of the machines and verify the model numbers. I'm very sure it was discontinued before the Lenovo buyout; it wasn't a very popular model. Which is what has confused me abo...

Is the G40 An IBM or a Lenovo?

Just curious. The G40 appears to have been released well before the 2005 takeover by Lenovo of the Thinkpad line, probably a full year earlier according to the info in Thinkwiki. However, I've seen several over the past year on the Bay of Evil that are clearly branded as Lenovos. They are not IBM's ...

Re: All my A series ThinkPads have finally died!

My condolences. I felt the same way when my I-1450 died wayyy back in the day, the loss of a good and faithful friend. On the plus side, there are plenty of A series pads on the Bay of Evil. There are several IBM-made G-series that I'm considering right now. You can probably find a nice A series the...

You know, it's funny. So many people have had issues with the Mwave, but I never did. Mine always worked perfectly, despite the bad press, sounding great on games and playing music CDs. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. Best of luck getting your's back to full fidelity.

Yes, my new to me A30 is being used as a file transfer and conversion machine using its ultrabays. I"ll also use it as a word processing machine only as soon as I get a new copy of Windoze. I also have an I-Series pad that will also be used for typing as soon as the screen can be made to work; its p...

Call me old fashion, but somehow I just don't feel that such young children should be using laptops or mobile devices. Not unless you want to kill the machine *really* fast.
I would think that a fan pad blowing more air into the cooling ports would be a good thing. It certainly helps with my Core I7 when the heat goes up during high end renderings.

Sheer curiosity on my end: what exactly don't you like about W2K? I'd argue that it's a much better fit for these systems. Mainly the fact that XP is easier to go wireless with for folks like me (brains like mush) than is 2000. I also like the look of XP better than 2000. Granted, the changes aren'...

Re: Thinkpad A31 Questions

It has Win 7 and so far (typing, file transfer, simple stuff) no issues. It moves along quite quickly, but then there's minimal stuff memory resident so that's probably a goodly part of it. I may go back down to XP, my all time favorite OS depending upon costs for this and a few other projects curre...

Thinkpad A31 Questions - EDIT - its an A30.

Hi all, Awhile back, I came into possession of an A31 2652 machine with a PIII according to the sticker on the machine, and Win 2000. It turns on and boots but is in need of a new battery as the old one is pretty much done, and it will only work plugged in which is why I haven't done much with it 't...

As with all things, you get what you pay for. I have two reasonably fast HP Envys, and both have held up rather well. The older one has a brushed aluminum frame and has been through trips, a hospital stay, and other travails and has held up quite nicely, with only a small crack on the screen's frame...
