Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Well, Raspberry Pi can only flash the EEPROM, not the MCU. Two options: you buy these chips and flash them yourself or I send you pre-programmed ones along with the new adapter board.

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

How do you know that caps are dead? They are just connected in parallel with the shorted component, so you can't tell which one is bad unless you power this thing up.

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

IC on the left is an EEPROM which stores EDID for dummy display. Left 4 pins are all connected to ground. If you want to find a short, you have to either connect the adapter board to a bench power supply and see which IC gets hot, or remove one of them and see if the short is gone. Got a hot air sta...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

How can you measure capacitors if there's a short to ground? 3 of them are connected between VCC3_BRG and ground, so they will appear as a short too.

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Yes, that's what happens when you hot plug the LVDS cable. We had similar cases before, so MCU is probably dead. Disconnect the LVDS cable and connect stock LCD back to see if the motherboard is still intact.

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

I actually meant VCC3_BRG - 4th pin from the left. VCC3P is not connected to anything on the adapter board. What did you measure?

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Sparks that you saw most probably came from VBL20 due to low impedance ESR capacity connected to it on the display board. Another way to get sparks is to short VBL20 to VCC3_BRG/VCC3P or to ground, but doing that will make some magic smoke to escape, leaving you at least without backlight.

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Why the flower don't you people disconnect the power?...
OK, first check if there's something burned on the adapter board. Next, check for a short to ground on VCC3P with/without connected LVDS cable. Next, connect the power and make sure you have VBL20 on LVDS connector. Let me know the results.

In rev.4 aux power wire is solely responsible for both adapter board and display logic supply. However, soldering this wire to the rev.3 pad won't damage anything.

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Today I handed the remainings of the second batch for manual assembly. ETA is 20 days. Speaking of which: 9 pre-orders are not paid after 6 days from the email with ...

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

There is no such thing as "imperfections in the wire", a wire has a resistance, that's all. You can get interference. Longer the cable, longer the possible variation in length between the lanes, but a wire remains a wire. Aside from resistance and length, wire has inductance and capacitance. The la...

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

I wonder if (like Louis Rossman suggested) it may be better to attach a wire to each pin and solder to the wire. I may be possible for the board to sit directly on top of where it normally would, right on top of those resistors. There's no much vertical space to do that. You gonna need a special ve...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

I don't want to go below 0.8mm because of mechanical durability. Although Louis finds these pins sitting too low to be soldered, in reality I have no trouble soldering them without micropensil iron. You just have to put good flux in the holes, touch the pad with hot iron, feed solder into the hole a...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Not really. Today I finished assembling 24 boards (from 120). I hoped to complete it quickly by using a stencil (which became much more important since the new design uses smaller passive components), but I'm not getting a sustainable quality, so for now I just solder every single part manually. But...
