Re: Is this too many laptops in your opinion?

I have a stack of Compaq E700's, mainly the 15" XGA ones. They're lovely for playing CD's or DVD's and they make a dandy Kindle reader too. Their keyboard was different from the ThinkPad one but also a tactile joy to use.

Re: "Framework" laptops - a possible ersatz for us Thinkpad keyboard lovers ?

You can't please everyone. I see that machine and I see the keys too close up to the screen in order to make space for a gigantic track pad, which I don't even use. Not to mention what looks like a 15:9 screen. So the ergonomics are of the modern, conventional kind where your arms are extended too f...

Re: Can P53 be operated closed?

I just got my laptop back from Lenovo, who were treating it for power supply issues. Surprisingly, it can be awakened by any USB keyboard input, whether or not I'm using the always-on USB port. It also wakes on USB mouse input. It is a very woke laptop.

Let me get this straight, you want the fan to operate LESS than it would under the BIOS regime?

Re: I think the GPU is reading artificially high and is causing TPFC to run the fan constantly.

Those are normal temperatures for a T60 with an ATI GPU. You can tweak it with TPFC fan settings and high-performance thermal pads, but temperatures in the low to mid 70's are within the design limits of those systems and not cause for worry.

Zoltan - Yes, T60's are very fussy about having a healthy battery (and can be made to freeze by a mouse fart).

Re: OSD Volume for T60

Really, I have all Radeon X1400's and 60P's and only one has shown this problem requiring that fast boot be disabled. Very odd indeed! Each seems to have its own personality after all the years :) I've been refurbishing one lately with the model number 2613-H4U, which doesn't even appear in the Leno...

Re: Can P53 be operated closed?

Well I was wondering because some of those Lenovo USB keyboards have the Fn key and hotkey combinations, so I wondered if you could use that Fn key to wake up as you can with a built-in Thinkpad keyboard.... I take it you can't? What if you used an always-on USB port of the laptop? I'm curious to tr...

Would it have to be kept on standby? I don't see any way to turn it back on from a USB keyboard without lifting the lid to access the power button.

Re: OSD Volume for T60

I had the fast boot issue that you mention on only one machine. Very disconcerting to be staring at a blank screen upon booting! I have a little pile of T60's and 60P's, sometimes I feel a little eccentric but I enjoy reviving them all. They normally need a heatsink overhaul at a minimum :) All seem...

Thanks, I'll look for that hotkey integration version. As I just mentioned in my revised message above, I have a T60p with the same issue on Win 8.1-32. Alas, the old version of the hotkeys didn't help :(

Re: OSD Volume for T60

I did try the C++ redistributable, but it didn't help. It's only the audio that doesn't display, whereas screen brightness works okay and projects the same slider on screen. So there you go! :D I've just noticed I have a 60p that I set up with Win 8.1 and it has the same problem, so this may be a ge...

Re: OSD Volume for T60

As I understand it, you only apply the 32 bit version, even it's a 64-bit Windows installation, because the OSD is all 32-bit code. Anyway, I did try that to no avail.

OSD Volume for T60

I've got a T60 here that I've put Windows 8.1 on and no matter what I do I can't get the on screen volume display. I've tried changing the power management driver, the audio software, and the hotkeys integration, all to no avail. Oh, yes, I've tried installing the Lenovo Power Management Software, w...

Re: T60 Graphics

I was compensating for the yellowed screen with the ATI Control Panel, it's a matter of adjusting the colors to bring the blue back. It's tolerable like that, reasonable color balance, but without the contrast and brilliance of a new Hydis. These do yellow, though more slowly than the Philips 1280X1...

If you have no luck, mine should be ready to go in a few weeks. I'm still migrating all my data off mine, which is a 2007-ys3, with a T7600 and the 5250 graphics. In Quebec City. It has a 10-year-old Hydis Flexview that is still tolerably bright but the colors have yellowed horribly. And a CF keyboa...

Re: T61 streaming problem with 64-bit Windows

I run mostly wired too. Wi-fi at a distance of 5 ft from the router is probably unhealthy anyway. And, yes, I'm going to move the 8 GB of RAM to the 64 bit integrated graphics Frankie, since it's totally wasted on the 32-bit one with the Nvidia graphics.

Re: T61 streaming problem with 64-bit Windows

I get the problem with Win 8.1, with no aero. I think it's some peculiarity of the T61 discrete motherboard that shows up on MSNBC and CNN only. It's not stutter; it can go for long pauses of 5 seconds or more while buffering. I think it's a flaw in the T61 'discrete' systems with 64-bit windows. Th...

Re: T61 streaming problem with 64-bit Windows

That's a T9500 CPU in there, thanks to Middleton bios. I was thinking along the lines you mention, that more work is being offloaded to the CPU. This system is actually quite responsive on 64-bit Windows.

Re: T61 streaming problem with 64-bit Windows

The resale value of Frankenpads and hot-rodded T61's doesn't reflect what the builder often puts into them :D I've seen these machines listed over the years, and the seller rarely gets anything like what they're looking for.

The ebay seller replied to me, and it's an 08/01 date on that box. So of no interest whatsoever :) Interesting what you say about the form factor and the amount of VRAM. Hence nothing in the standard format goes beyond 128 MB.

Re: T61 streaming problem with 64-bit Windows

Yeah, I looked it up and it's only 256 on that chip, as you say. I run two of these; one in 14" screen and one in Frankenpad configuration. I'll just stick with my 32-bit Win-8.1. I have a stack of these machines, so no worries about a graphics chip failing. And I have a widescreen 15-inch unit with...
