Re: About to purchase a T470 - what does 'manufactorer drop ship' really mean?

Thanks, that's exactly what I was afraid of. Once they have my money I'm pretty much out of options so I'd rather wait until the device shows up somewhere "in stock". I'm hoping it won't be long because it seems like they have just started shipping the first T470 TopSeller models - 20HD000WUS, 20HD0...

About to purchase a T470 - what does 'manufactorer drop ship' really mean?

After serious considerations I have decided to replace my aging X220 with a brand-new T470, and I have found a TopSeller model that I want: 20HD000XUS with Core i5-7300U, 8GB of RAM, 500GB HDD, FHD-Display, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, and 3 years warranty. Unfortunately, this particular mo...

Re: T470 Screen - touch vs non-touch - how are they different

Usually, a touch screen will be a bit darker than the identical non-touch version of the screen due to the additional sensitive touch layer that has to be added on top of the panel itself. Expect to lose between 20-40 nits of brightness because of it, which would bring the T470 down from slightly be...

Re: Review of the ThinkPad T470s (Core i7, WQHD)

The USB C port is not the main charging port, the T470s comes with a slim-tip charging-port at the back of the left side. If you order a T470s, you will get it with a slim-tip charger, charging via USB C is optional. Turns out you're wrong about that, the T470s comes with a USB-C charger by default...

Re: New T430s has landed! (2 small linked thumbnails)

I though long and hard about my purchase. The T430s I bought (to me) looks sexy and still retains most of it's classic lines. I generally don't like the direction Lenovo is going with their designs. I see your objections to the x40 design decisions yet the only issue I am willing to acknowledge are...

Re: Suggestions: What to upgrade on an X220?

You're right, it depends on how the machine behaves. If it gets really hot or temperatures seem to be jumping up and down erratically then the thermal compound went bust and needs replacing. If not then I personally wouldn't bother either because disassembly and reassembly of the X220 is a major PIT...

Re: Review of the ThinkPad T470s (Core i7, WQHD)

True. It's just that in the current lineup I have yet to find a compromise that I am willing to live with. Right now I'm seriously considering getting a T450s instead because a) they can be had brand-new for 40-50% of the price of a T470s, b) they're similarly equipped to and c) not much slower than...

Re: Suggestions: What to upgrade on an X220?

One more thing: if you haven't done it yet you may want to consider replacing the thermal paste on the CPU eventually. It gets pretty crusty and hard after a few years, and loses its capabilities. I did mine yesterday and the difference is staggering. Not only does the entire device stay cooler (I w...

I know all that (except for the part with the charger, I thought it came with a USB-C charger instead of the old one so thank you for that) yet it still doesn't make any sense to put it... well, there. That placement it simply put very, very stupid. Quite frankly I'm rather disappointed with Lenovo'...

Re: Suggestions: What to upgrade on an X220?

For the trackpoint & trackpad you don't want to use Lenovo's drivers, neither the ones from the Lenovo website nor the ones supplied by Windows Update. Instead, go to synaptics.com and download the latest PS/2 drivers (can be found under resources, currently 19.0.19.1). Not sure about the latest one...

Re: Review of the ThinkPad T470s (Core i7, WQHD)

While they may have gotten the display right this time they have managed to f**k up in other places. The USB-C port for charging the laptop for example - who on earth decided to put that smack down in the middle on the right hand side? At some point, during a meeting, somebody at Lenovo must have be...

And knowing this is a ThinkPads forum, are there (a) any other ThinkPads you'd recommend (e.g. T460) or even a different Windows machine? I've only ever owned ThinkPads (since 1998) but time does march on. If the 15.6" Dell turns out to be too large for you maybe the new Thinkpad 13 is worth consid...

Re: Replacement for X220: X260 or E470? Or something else?

I'm sure I could replace the motherboard, it's probably what I did last year but without the part about removing fan from motherboard and replacing. The cheapest i7 I see on eBay is $81 from China ("almost 100% new") or $93 from Canada ("used"). I guess it could be worth a shot but at this point I ...

Re: Replacement for X220: X260 or E470? Or something else?

Windows 10 - It's here to stay; I am not sure any Windows-based system will come with any other version these days, although some current ones do offer "downgrade rights" to Windows 7, as you observed. In a generation or two, most hardware will be tested for Windows 10 exclusively, and you may not ...

Re: x230 compatible fans (want to upgrade and make it quieter)

Same here, I've got the Delta fan in my X220 and it's definitely very noisy. Inaudible on level 1 (~1900rpm), definitely noticeable on level 2 (~2900rpm), obnoxiously so in addition to sounding rather whiney on level 3 (~3600rpm), and painfully loud on level 5 and 7 (4000 and 4600rpm, respectively)....

Of course it supports an SSD. Every system with a 2.5" harddrive will support a 2.5" SATA SSD. Period. I second the notion to upgrade your existing system instead of buying a new one. From what you're describing it seems that the CPU isn't the limit you're running into, it's the RAM. 8GB should be f...

Re: Buying a new thinkpad

If your budget is $1,000 you may want to consider the L-series as well. In terms of build and overall quality they're right in between the E- and T-series. In other news, I would not get a laptop with only 4GB of RAM anymore. Especially considering you don't seem to be interested in the tremendous p...

Yeah, I gave up the Linux on a laptop experiments many years ago. It's just not worth it. I'm running Windows 10 natively and Linux inside VMs. Works much better and it's much more reliable. But thanks for the heads up anyway ;)

Re: A few question about the T460s, need some advice please

So apparently it was worth the wait. The T470s has been announced and as far as I understand all models will have 8GB soldered onto the mainboard, meaning they should all support 24GB of memory regardless of whether or not one choses the dedicated Nvidia GPU  Then again it's also possible that ...

Re: A few question about the T460s, need some advice please

You're right but the thing is I don't really need a dedicated GPU. Infact, it'd be completely useless to me and only one more chip that could render my notebook useless once it fails. However, I would certainly profit from more RAM and I'd be willing to put up with the Nvidia GPU for that. Maybe the...

Interesting. I cannot configure a T460s on Lenovo's website (http://www.lenovo.com) that would even have an Nvidia GPU, and all models have 4GB + xGB RAM, according to their configurator. Where would one find a T460s CTO models with 8GB and Nvidia GPU if Lenovo isn't even selling them through their ...

Don't underestimate the Core i5-2520M - it's plenty fast! Compared to the latest and greatest Intel Core i5 DualCore for laptops, the 2.5 GHz Core i5-7200U Kaby Lake, it's only around 15% slower in singlecore and 25% in multicore scenarios. Intel has been working less on performance improvements and...

1. I'm with dr_st on this one - if it's not broken don't fix it. Haven't replaced mine yet and it's totally fine, not worth bothering. 2. You won't notice the difference between DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866, much less between CL11 and CL10. In most cases you won't be even able to measure it in benchmarks...

It probably has more to do with the fact that SATA-III over mSATA only came with SATA 3.1. Which was fully specified and released in July 2011, at which point the X220 had already been on the market for more than three months. Let's face it: we're talking about an almost six year old device here. At...
