Re: X9000 - is it worth it?

Just letting you know you might take some flack for calling it a "retro" ThinkPad. Apparently, the people who define "retro computing" also happen to be members of this forum, and some of them insist that the T60/T61 is in fact, NOT retro. This is a fallacy, obviously they don't understand the true...

Re: T60p Supposed to Feel This Slow

For whatever strange reason, I had to disable windows updates on my T60p when I had it, for whatever reason it would always ramp up CPU cycles and make everything painfully slow. There was a period of time when Windows Update was broken and would never finish updating on some Win 7 systems. And the...

Re: X9000 - is it worth it?

In my opinion, totally worth it. Extreme chips tend to be better binned than their non-extreme counterparts. I run mine at 2.2GHz @ 0.9250V or 2.8GHz @ 1.0750V, so it is a decent chip. I undervolt with throttlestop as I did not want to mess with FSB or pin mods. It works fine as my light duty nightl...

This is not a debate forum please address members with respect. Thank you for your opinion, I have heard otherwise from multiple sources. Re: Running an Intel X9100 in T601 frankenpad without hardware mod?

I see you mentioned undervolting Nvidia GPU chips. Although I have not tried this I've heard multiple reports that this can destroy circuits in the graphic system caused by insufficient voltage. If your purpose is to make the GPU last longer you will likely only cause an early demise. Of the mother...

In any way, the best of luck to your abilities to keep that graphics chip below the 'danger zone' range.
Aggressive undervolting and high quality thermal compound should assist.

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

Back in the day, it was said, perhaps on the Lenovo site, that only a small, though nonetheless significant, number of these machines died. If that was true at the time, is it still true? Or are almost all of them bound to fail? Well, Lenovo tried to downplay the issue for the longest time, until t...

15.4" T61p 08/07 build date still running fine 10.5 years later. I've owned it for about 2 of those years, immediately undervolted both the CPU and GPU. Never had a problem, temps are completely sane and safe. If you under-volt an electric motor, it will draw more current and over-heat. How a circu...

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

Install Middleton's BIOS, re-paste the CPU or preferably swap it for T8300/9300. SSD comes next and you'll have something to truly enjoy for a few more years. My thoughts exactly. I have a Middleton T61 with T9500 & SSD and until two weeks ago it was my favourite TP. However, it has a 1680x1050 scr...

Re: How much can you undervolt your T61 gpu?

Well, that's cutting 8W off the GPU. If you succeeded that, you're super-lucky. Start betting for money. Honestly, I've never had any T61p able to undervolt below 1.05V unless underclocked. Depends on your definition of stable. I am able to watch youtube video (keeping several open, maybe 7 tabs) a...

Re: The most expensive and rarest Thinkpads ? [relax topic]

As for ISS ThinkPads...I believe that rkawakami has a couple of A31p systems that would fit the bill... 760XD is also an ISS Thinkpad, though my example has a morbid history to it. I did not know when I bought it at in an estate sale auction, but it when I finally sourced a power adapter for it and...

Hi all, I am satisfied with restoring the ThinkPad to factory condition and Windows XP. The only change I made was I swapped out the hard drive for a brand new SSD. Re: Artifacts/distortion occasionally when playing youtube videos in HD (T61p)

Just to add my experience, I have global artifacting/distortion very, very rarely, when I have maybe 15+ youtube tabs open in chrome, I'm not sure if it is a driver crash, a voltage problem, or a hardware failure, but it is curable by sleep or reboot. Re: BSOD during BIOS update with Highsun's modded BIOS

Never, ever, ever flash your BIOS from within windows. Make a bootable DOS usb drive and flash from there. override the checksum error when prompted, the modified bios does not have checksum corrected, but no impact on integrity of the BIOS. just make sure the MD5 matches.

Re: OWNERS OF CORE 2 QUAD MODED T61/T60s, How is the expreience of owning it?

Still trying to work up the courage to molest my T61 to accept my QX9300. I'm running about as pimped out a T61 I can without actually taking a soldering iron to anything. I'd feel really bad if I fried the motherboard with it's respun NV GPU. It's why I was kind of happy to see the Quad core mod b...

Re: Zender BIOS Issue?

I vaguely remember something about taping pins (19?20?) but that could've been back in the mini PCI days. My T61p with Middleton's BIOS doesn't light the LED in Windows with AR9380 but most certainly does in Linux. I was never bothered by that fact enough to even contemplate doing anything about it...

Oh come on. This ignites discussion what is retro and what is not. This s totally subjective and not worth picking. I could say just as much that my 355 is retro and 600x is not because it already has a TFT screen. Quite true. It's all about your definition. P.S. Neither of your machines are vintag...

Or, for the low low price of free, you can download throttlestop and lower your voltage on the CPU without reducing clockspeed. That will drastically reduce temperatures and power consumption. My X9000 was rated to run 2.8Ghz at 1.2250V, I can run the same frequency at just 1.0875V, big improvement...

Re: Is this cpu defective?

AFAIK a X9000 is not free. The OP is talking about a T7300 or T7500 with his T9300 being utilized in another machine. A X9000 is a nice CPU and throttlestop can be used for this particular CPU but downvolting will not work or is beneficial for all CPUs. By all means, if the OP can get a X9000 as ea...

Like many things in life, some things are just left to chance. My M18x panel cannot overclock past 65Hz, while my M15x could do 120Hz all day. Luck of the draw I suppose. Squeezing everything out of the T61p has been fun!

A kind soul on reddit was kind enough to give me the two restore disc ISO’s for the 600 series. I burned both and verified, but when I try to boot the disc, it shows IBM Thinkpad, sleep mode enabled, and the last thing I see before reboot is driver was successfully installed.

Of course, your overclocked refresh will vary depending on your panel. Seems ...

Since you have T61p, increase ram to 8GB, and disable page file entirely. Gain space on your SSD and reduce writes. Just don't go crazy on the number of tabs you have open.
