Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes

Even with BIOS+EC update installed the system isn't reporting it. I'll report back in a few hours. Meanwhile, the EC update did indeed fix the fan problem… a bit too well. The aftermarket X200 fan I installed doesn't run at all until I hit 100°C, but it sounds like it's trying (and failing) to start...

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update

Thanks for "trying" to answer the questions. Can someone who has a board share answers? No need for being an [censored]. You realize I typed out that answer on an X62…? Someone told on reddit that the X62 is able to accept a m.2 SSD. Slot is mPCIe, with screw holes for half and full size as far as ...

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what Wifi antenna FRUs are / can be used with the X62 case? I broke my antenna cables, and the seller isn't responding to my emails any more. Aren't they just the normal ones that come with X60/X61? Checked the hardware manual for the FRU? There's five different a...

I don't see anything about dedicated graphics, but yes, it's a brand new mainboard + current-ish generation CPU. Same as the X62.

Re: What is a good Linux OS for legacy thinkpads?

Do rolling release distributions like Arch really run well on that old hardware? Things like graphics card drivers are deprecated after a decade or so, Mesa/Xorg don't keep them indefinitely like the kernel does.

Try gunzip, maybe it'll give you a better error message, but most likely the file is damaged.

Just wipe and reinstall from scratch. It's almost always the sanest option.

Re: How to speed up the Retro Thinkpad Project

The problem with this approach is that the mobo's BIOS would still have to be tweaked to accomodate the classic keyboard. Else the mapping would be messed up. Oh yeah, haven’t thought about that. But it was done for that xx20→xx30 transplant, so it might work. It worked with the 30 series because t...

Re: How to speed up the Retro Thinkpad Project

Problem with that is the utter lack of plausible display candidates. Apple has exclusive contracts for their panel from all we hear, and that leaves exactly zero non-16:9 panels bigger than 14". And Lenovo seems to be unwilling to foot the (admittedly unreasonable) bill for an exclusive.

Re: How to speed up the Retro Thinkpad Project

16:10, 3:2 and 4:3 panels are mainly available in the 12-13ish" range, so it'd most likely be an X-ish model, unless you want 16:9.

Re: Low voltage v Normal RAM (Mixing?)

There's a difference between "low voltage" DDR3 RAM (which supports 1.5V by default and 1.35V via separate SPD entry) and DDR3L.

The X220 will work with low voltage DDR3, by ignoring the 1.35V mode and driving it with 1.5V. DDR3L will not work.

Re: Reliable SSD drives for the X220

It's the same controller and NAND as the SanDisk X400, and both are similar to the Crucial MX300: Apparently reasonable for the price, but with some performance problems on sustained I/O (with the X400 and probably the WD not quite as bad as the Crucial). But so far no firmware issues reported.

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes

The fix works, btw, and I've taken the liberty to make a systemd version for Arch . Should also work with Debian 8+ and whichever Ubuntu versions ship with systemd. I'm not happy with the amount of work the X200 fan mod takes, I wouldn't recommend it. It doesn't solve the underlying problem and it's...

Re: 51NB.com: X62 mainboard in the way

The current revision is proprietary and uses a regular, closed source UEFI. Not sure about future plans, I think they're a biiit swamped with all the attention.
