Re: X220 from i5 to i7 - Direct drop-in replacement?

Hi guys. I'm looking at buying an i5 X220 with IPS and also found an i7 mobo (2640M). I would like to know if the mobos are a direct drop-in, or other mods are required? FryPpy put an x230 motherboard into his x220. That's doable but keep in mind they have different types of display ports and you'l...

Never been much a fan of the numeric keypad myself either. I'd much prefer a classic 7 row layout keyboard (even if they stick with chicklet) and maybe some programmable macro keys.

Just run a magnet over the area where the sensor is located and see if the screen responds. If it does then you will likely just need to reposition the original magnet. It's pretty straightforward with the maintenance manual.

Yeah that's pretty much what a custom ROM will do for you. I took a quick look over on XDA and it's doable without doing any complicated stuff. The most important bit is to get a custom recovery on there. That way you can flash any roms you like.

What in particular is it that you are having problems with? I've not played around with that specific device but It's pretty straightforward really. Re: Silicone spray on fan?

Are we talking about doing this with the fan in place? If so,I wouldn't do this either. The likelihood of the it getting on the axle shaft is very slim and in the process, you'll get it all over the inside of the fan housing, possibly giving dust something to stick to. I prefer to remove the fan and...

Can you post a pic of the standoffs as they are now? They can be removed from the motherboard without too much hassle but you'd need to use care so as not to damage the socket or any components in the area. I don't know if you'll be able to get replacement standoffs that match, but it shouldn't be t...

Iirc the T420 chipset does not support 8Gb SO-DIMMS in any configuration.

This has been discussed before.

The T430s isn't as sturdy as the X220, imo (the T430 non S is like a tank in comparison). The prospect of a FHD or higher res screen upgrade makes the 430s very attractive though (the non S models have been put on the back burner, I believe).
