Re: Post your desktop.

Here's a shot of my W520 and its new OEM installation of Windows 7 Pro, replete with what appears to be all the Levono tools and recovery partition. I bought a HDD with a Lenovo image and put Windows 10 on the shelf: http://s13.postimg.org/nm8s31o8n/OEMWin7b.png And here's my X61 with a new Debian j...

Re: Microsoft finally reveals what data Windows 10 really collects

My point is I just have to trust someone. The Clean Hands Doctrine: n. a rule of law that a person coming to court with a lawsuit or petition for a court order must be free from unfair conduct (have "clean hands" or not have done anything wrong) in regard to the subject matter of his/her claim. htt...

Re: Microsoft finally reveals what data Windows 10 really collects

On my Windows 10 Pro box, in the Advanced Settings of the Windows Firewall, there is an outgoing rule called "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry", defined as "Unified Outgoing Telemetry Client" that is set to Allow outgoing traffic by default on no specific port. It belongs to the DiagTrack Gr...

Re: Firefox 53: no support for Windows XP or Vista

I use the FreeBSD ports system so when a vulnerability is discovered in Firefox I have to find a substitute available in ports to make do till the maintainer patches it. Midori is about the best alternative I've found, and there is a version for Windows too: http://www.midori-browser.org/ And if it ...

Yes, it's lightweight, without a ton of dependencies, and what I always use. That's just one of many skins available for it.

Re: Anyone running FreeBSD

I posted a screenshot of my new X61 running FreeBSD in that thread. It came with a 160GB HD running Vista Business so while I was waiting for it to arrive I set up BSD on a faster 100GB drive in my T61 and after a few days swapped them out. I had to make a few desktop app adjustments for the differe...

Re: Any interest in ZIP-drives and ZIP-disks?

My Zip drives and disks (I LOVE 'EM!) work great in Win 7 and everything underneath that. When I tried them on my A31 under Win 7, no issues. For Win 8 and above on my more modern laptops, they tend to just spin and spin and spin, the system not recognizing them. I'm using external Zip drives. Bob ...

Re: No Windows Update for Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000

That's not true, no reason to panic. The existing updates will still be available for a long time; it is just that new ones are not going to be released (except for the Malicious Software Removal Tool and maybe Windows Defender). FYI, I'm looking at Microsoft Security Essentials with a "PC status: ...

Re: No Windows Update for Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000

I have a tall Gateway Performance Series tower that came with a 500MHz Katmai PIII, a VooDoo3 (upgraded to a GeForce2) and 256MB RAM in need of a power supply I've kept all these years in hopes of someday bringing it back to its former Win98SE glory. It was the shiznik for a brief period and came wi...

Re: No Windows Update for Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000

So running Windows Update on an out-of-date Vista takes forever. The only way I could sort of get it to work is using WSUSOffline, and manual installation of specific updates. I just took delivery of an X61 that came with Vista Business and looks like it hasn't been updated in over a year. I knew t...

Disaster confirmed : http://www.zdnet.com/article/congress-repeals-obama-internet-history-privacy-rules/ It spins it in a slightly, but meaningfully different light, though. The key point is: "Once the bill becomes law, it effectively lets internet providers carry on doing with your browser history...

I initially went with the 32bit version of FreeBSD on my T61 but built the 64bit version over the weekend:

I know it looks virtually the same but this is my working configuration. The only thing that ever changes is my wallpaper.

Re: Anyone running FreeBSD

I've been running FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE-p8 on my T61 for over a week now. I initially installed the 32bit version but built the 64bit version a couple days ago. I posted screenshots in the appropriate thread. Both times the build process went smoothly and no different than on my Sony Vaio (32bit) or ...

Re: Windows 10 + W520 frame rate drops to ~30 fps in games

I just took delivery of my new W520 a few days ago and it came with Windows 10 Pro. I've got 3 other machines running FreeBSD but am keeping Windows on this one so I can play some of my older games. I had seen people talking about how the W520 could run hot but was surprised how cool mine ran overal...

Oh I have the EXACT SAME Logitech keyboard too! Just I don't even know why anyone would like it because it looks quite ugly to my eyes! Re: Anyone running FreeBSD

Hi, everybody. I've used FreeBSD as my OS for over 10 years and if all goes well by this time next week will be the proud owner of a W520 and T61 I just purchased off ebay. The W520 was acquired with the intent of utilizing it for casual gaming but I have every intent of making the T61 a FreeBSD box...
