Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Is there anything that we haven't tried yet? I ended up settling with reinstalling lightdm, then setting it to autologin by uncommenting the following lines in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf user-session=default ... autologin-user=<user> autologin-user-timeout=0 and then adding a custom rtcwake script t...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

remove gdm/lightdm/every DM that you could have installed before, write your .xinitrc then starting your DE only via startx ! :thumbs-UP: It took me awhile, since I haven't done either of these before, but I patched the 4.9 kernel and wrote my xinitrc script. The patch didn't fix the black login is...

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

Currently, I'm using the w03 model, transitioning to the w11 later next week. So the w21 is thinner? I wonder if the w11 is as well. I was getting bleed at the top and bottom mostly, probably because of cable routing, I'll watch for that on my next lid.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

@boutch55555, what thickness double-sided tape are you using to keep the panel in? I'm using 1.5 mm foam tape and it seems like it's a little too thick. Putting the bezel on causes a fair amount of bleed.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

I have not noticed it but I read it's enabled on the XPS, so it would apply to both the 03 (2015) and 11/21 (2016). No mention of it in the 03 technical specification PDF though. I taped the 03 into my lid as a temporary panel and, though it's got some backlight bleed because of how much you have t...

In its current state, it's fine. Per my use case, I'd rather suspend on every start than patch the kernel every update. If I find a fix in the meantime, I'll post it here.

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

You could try to modify the code as follows : This gives no perceptible difference. and when it does work, can you see that is notably faster than xrandr & monitors.xml ? Having only booted into lightdm three times total (I think), I can't make a good judgement on this. It may, it may not. Of the t...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

So replace /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fhdmod.conf content with : This gives the same result as with /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fhdmod.conf and the monitor.conf files. I can see lightdm on occasion, but predominantly, I have to suspend-wake the x220 to see the log in screen. Nice that it's just down to on...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Great, but did/would you try it without /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fhdmod.conf ? Because as you are using monitors.xml I think is in fact now useless... I went and tried, removing this file from that directory makes it so that when you log in, you get the extended display setup, and the screen that sh...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

Alright, I got it. For whatever reason, even in editing gdm3's monitor.conf and disabling wayland, gdm3 still gives a black screen. I switched to lightdm (the display manager I prefer anyway, thankfully) and xfce4 starts without issues. Gnome still starts with a black screen, and you have to suspend...

Well, what if you put the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fhdmod.conf ? Alright, we're getting somewhere. X starts as a black screen, but putting the laptop to sleep and waking it up again shows the "LVDS" screen as the primary (invisible) on the left side of an extended monitor setup. So what...

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

Oh man, yours has much more room than mine does. I removed that white plastic and it's still glass on magnesium for the test fit. I had to remove all the clips to the bezel, and as a result, it no longer clips in on the sides. I'll find a hack to make it work, but it's not pretty.

Nice progress

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

I bent it outward, such that makes the footprint larger for the antenna. I had to break the core wire connection and resolder it, which is (I'm sure) where I messed up. With the new ones, sitting in the same location in my house, I'm getting a signal level of about -43 dBm. The originals, I believe ...

Hey, that's pretty cool. I'm betting the seller just put non-stock antennas in there, but you came out with the better deal. Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

Does a 3G (possibly 4G?) connection sound like a workaround? My issue was that the antennas in the bezel, near the top, are too large. Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far

On the x220, what was your method of approaching the hulking mass of WiFi antennas? They're very much in the way; I suppose they could be replaced by slimmer ones, but I wonder if they can be bent flat without losing reception. If this was possible, they would just sit behind the screen. I simply re...

Any chance of cutting down the bezel, just like in the 51nb mods?
I don't have a 20x/30x model, but it's fairly thin plastic, so it should just require patience. I'm gonna be doing it by hand, since I have no CNC available. boutch already did one on a test bezel, earlier in this thread
