I just realized I was looking at desktop packages, but even though they are Sandy Bridge processors they use a different incompatible socket.

'Nuff said on this subject I guess. That's out.
Correct; you need the mobile version of the CPU, which is compatible with the FCPGA988 socket,

Re: Tell me about your T420 cooling fan!

I took the T420 back apart and mystery solved; I have the 04W0627 single-pipe heatsink. While I was inside, I decided to take everything back apart. The first go around, I did not completely disassemble the fan, because I didn't have any of that nifty metallic tape that Lenovo uses, nor did I know ...

AFAIK, coreboot supports the xx30 series and it does not preserve the whitelist.

Granted, coreboot is a wee bit more involved than simply flashing a new firmware.

Re: Whats the highest wifi card for x230 without bios modding

IIRC, the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (Taylor Peak) does 802.11n on both bands. It's probably not worth the effort though, unless the 2.4GHz band is saturated in your area.

You need to go to 802.11ac to get any meaningful throughput increase, but that requires a modded BIOS.

Yes, fuses are generally designed to pop, before any damage is done to the component which it protects. Unfortunately the fuses used in these machines are incredibly tiny and require the skills of someone experienced in soldering tiny surface mount devices. You will obviously wish to determine the r...

Re: Needed equipment for hardware ROM flashing?

The Raspberry Pi seems to be both popular and easy to use. EDIT: Additionally you'll need a Pomona SOIC8 clip and some short jumper leads - the shorter the better. For instance, the leads supplied with the Bus Pirate are waaaay too long and may not work reliably, if at all. Flashrom is the software ...

The X230 has both a ThinkLight plus the option of backlit or non-backlit keyboard.
It's the only machine that has both.

T420 - Best LVDS Experience?

I have a T420 with the original 1366x768 TN display. I'm wondering if there is any consensus on which of the currently available LVDS panels offer the best viewing experience. After a cursory look, I came up with the AUO B140RTN02.1 which has superior brightness, contrast and viewing angles to the O...

Re: Tips on buying a T420/T420s/or T430?

I think a T420 would be a particularly good choice, especially if paired with a lightweight Linux distribution. I also have a T440p, which is better in very conceivable way (except the keyboard), but I always reach for the T420. It's a great machine and they are quite cheap. Let's face it, it's goin...

I've been using a single-pipe T420 all week and, usually, can't hear, or feel, the fan. For what it's worth, I tried the single-pipe heat-sink with an i7-3610QM. At 100% cpu usage the machine overheated and shutdown within 10 seconds. I immediately turned the machine back on and ordered a dual-pipe...

Oh, I must have missed that and just assumed you were using Windows. How do the grills on the base of the laptop look? Did you clean them also? I've found this can make a big difference. The double-pipe versions outperform the single-pipe models. There's currently $5/piece on ebay. This makes logical sense. Good to hear you're back up and running. I would never just rely on blowing a fan clean. Re: Tell me about your T420 cooling fan!

There is a heatsink model that has two heatpipes. I have this model in my T420 and the fan is audible. It's possible there is a heavy dust build up inside the fan's plastic housing that is impeding airflow. Disassembly to lift off the heatsink then unscrew the fan housing may allow you to clean fur...
