Re: Some PC 110 pics...

Following up here somewhat... I have purchased the docking station from Japan, and the floppy drive from the Netherlands. Both work as expected which is great. In a perfect world I still want to acquire the keyboard adapter cable to use a PS/2 device without requiring the dock, but it will be very h...

Re: Z60m/Z61m Motherboard Swap Questions

Based on the earlier post I linked to, and some other "allusions" to this being done that exist out there, and it being a kind of silly thing to lie about, I suspect it's indeed possible like user underclocker reported in 2009. So I'm less worried about that and more worried about the other issues b...

Z60m/Z61m Motherboard Swap Questions

Hi, I have a ThinkPad Z60m and I'm absolutely in love with its build quality. This is an incredibly sturdy computer, and makes my W520 seem like a weakling, where I previously thought it was a pretty solid machine. However the Pentium M CPU is somewhat limiting. The P-M was an excellent CPU for its ...

Re: Some PC 110 pics...

To follow up on that thought: it is 100% not a polarizer defect. The large 'ring of death', for lack of a better term, is inside of the LCD panel. I can confirm this because I peeled back one of the polarizers enough to verify. The opacity issue is inside the LCD itself. Additionally, the hairline c...

Re: Some PC 110 pics...

If it is indeed only the polarizer film, then this (and many!) PC 110 can be repaired with a bit of surgery that doesn't even look that difficult.

Since I've got two bad screens it seems silly not to try it. The one with the nasty flicker has some other issue in addition, of course.

Re: Some PC 110 pics...

To me it looks like a polarizer issue and I've seen similar screens do that but the image is still faintly visisble even if the color and contrast are screwball. You might want to also talk to xiphmont and see if new polarizers can be on your broken LCDs since they all seem to just have the "ring" ...

Re: Some PC 110 pics...

I would have ballparked the capabilities of a 486SX-33 at "thousands of times less capable" than current stuff, lol. My observations about the PC 110 go somewhat in a different direction, though. For its time this is easily the smallest reasonably fully-featured notebook PC. Although today we can pu...

Some PC 110 pics...

ThinkPad? No, not quite. Appreciated by ThinkPad enthusiasts, on the other hand...absolutely! I have recently purchased three "untested junk" PC 110s (PC110? there is a space between PC and 110, but it's a small space...) from Japan. Two of the three have been received; the third is coming soon, alo...

Re: WTB IBM PC110

By an incredible stroke of luck, one of my three new PC 110s is 100% functional, including the elusive screen. It was sold as untested junk so I had concerns, though the photos suggested the screen had not degraded as they typically do. I am accordingly joining the ranks of the many who need PC 110 ...

Re: Replace TP760 IDE HDD with SSD?

I've explored this, as I have a bunch of old machines, not just ThinkPads, which could benefit from getting rid of the spinning disk: improve battery life, potentially improve disk i/o, improve long term reliability... I have found through comparing the options on the market that the best bang for t...

Re: T21 won't power on

Approximately 1 in every 30 attempts to power it on now will successfully power on, POST, and then begin loading the OS, except it will lock up or BSOD during the process with a different error each time, and the HDD LED will get stuck blinking in a very specific pattern. Does pressing power button...

Re: T21 won't power on

Well, I can report (neither happily nor sadly, just "matter-of-factly") that the T21 is now doing more than it was. After sitting on the shelf in a fairly cold room for a few days, I pulled it out again to just see if it would do anything. The charging LED lit up when I connected the charger, and be...

Re: WTB IBM PC110

If it aint a good screen, upgrade it to TFT. Then you can have the only TFT PC110  Oh don't worry, that has definitely occurred to me. There is surely a way to make some sort of newer panel understand what the PC110 is outputting. Video signals are not complete witchcraft. As it happens I'...

My apologies for the lack of response earlier. I am still seeking one of these, but have inched my way closer to one. I currently own one that will soon be in transit from far away lands. Its working condition is not known but case plastics and (!!!!!!) LCD panel appear to be in good condition. Afte...

T21 won't power on

Hey folks. From Googling, and some previous knowledge of the T2x series, I understand that these machines seem to be prone to a sudden death condition where they either will not power on, or may suddenly die during use. In my case, my T21 was previously working 100% fine and did not suffer any sudde...

Re: Spent TWO YEARS putting this vintage thinkpad BEAST together. Hope you guys like it!

Cisco Aironet 350. As far as I know, it's one of the only PCMCIA wireless cards with DOS drivers. I'm positive that I've sent files over my wireless network between Windows XP and WFW3.11 using this card. It's been a few years but it's hard to forget something like that. The Aironet 350 is also one...

Re: Positive feedback for FAIR Traders

I purchased a screen assembly for my 760E from RealBlackStuff as he offered it when I posted about having some issues with that machine. He packaged the item extremely well (they could have dropped it to me from a passing airplane) and shipped quickly, and was very fair on the cost. Very pleased wit...

Re: 760E XGA Display Distortion

Photos of the 760E surgery will follow once I've had a chance to dig into that project. Phase 1 was to hook up the screen assembly as received, and verify all is working as it should. I did find that the lid closed switch (to turn off the display, put machine to sleep, etc) is damaged/missing from ...

Re: 760E XGA Display Distortion

I have received RBS' screen assembly, excellently packaged and in better shape than I might have expected from the description. I also received another item that accidentally included the same inverter again: a Dolch PAC 64 network analyzer, which is basically just a Pentium lunchbox PC. As an inter...

Re: WTB IBM PC110

I've responded to the above via PM - thank you for getting in touch about it. Somewhat as an aside: what exactly is the failure/effect/environmental cause of the LCD panels getting destroyed seemingly just due to age? I have never seen, with any computer except a PC110, the type of damage that these...

Re: 760E XGA Display Distortion

No, the LCD unit is an FRU. All LCDs contain an irreplaceable controller with the transistors hooked up to the board using a 1024x768 ribbon cable(so like 2000 connections) Ehhhhh... Picked apart the HMM. It's still a mess, but now it's less of a mess. Of all the panels listed (yikes), there are on...

Re: 760E XGA Display Distortion

Looks like the flat flex that connects the LCD to its controller is failing. Think a replacement LCD is the only option. Is the ribbon cable not given its own FRU#? I find it hard to believe the panel and/or complete screen assembly is the only way to get one... The HMM is a mess, it covers half a ...

760E XGA Display Distortion

Hello folks, The second of my 760Es has the XGA (1024x768) screen, but has a display issue. The entire screen is "ghosted" and has somewhat of a grid overlaid on top of it. I found that through flexing (yeah I know, bad) or applying pressure to the screen assembly, sometimes, it would appear 100% no...
