My X61s - Slow project thread!

Hi! I got given this the other week, a filthy looking Thinkpad X61s. Compared to the T43, it looks terrible! https://flic.kr/p/2gSxvsy Under the lid was no better either https://flic.kr/p/2gSxvrm Started to clean it up, and use a live linux to get it booted and see what's on it. Imagine my surprise ...

Battery seems fab so far, charging nicely!

Happy with it so far for £28. It was missing a rubber foot so I peeled one off the old dead battery before lobbing it in the bin and stuck it on

This is still going very well, been using it daily recently (poor R500). Went shopping yesterday: Used 16 cycle 9 cenn genuineb attery with a claimed 2+ hours life on the ebay add for £28 2x 4gb sticks of RAM for £10 each 1 new heatsink and fan assembly (non genuine I think but shows the right FRU n...

Re: My new Thinkpad X201! (ongoing project)

Your not wrong, typing this with just 2 tabs of firefox open the CPU is at 66 degrees! Fan is on quite high too, I can feel it vibrating the whole machine (it's the only moving part now...) I downloaded the Lenovo software from the windows store, and found that the battery has 0.34% life in it... Bu...

Re: How common is this crack in T2x systems *PICS*

I fexed 2 last weekend. Both old daily laptops of a friend of mine, who fancied having them working again. I fixed it by removing the keyboard and optical drive, then running a VERY thin bead of hot glue down both sides. It has to be thin or the keyboard lifts and the optical drive gets pushed down ...

Re: Restoration of a ThinkPad T40 and some questions

There is a performance boost in my experience. But to the point where MX Linux can plod along ok with the CPU sitting at 100% less of the time... It's mainly the generational improvements, it can take more, but still gets maxed out. By all means do it for fun, I know that feeling but I can happily b...

Re: How to even get repair in London, 2019, for IBM R31 and T41?

I'm in Thame, Oxfordshire so fairly close (work in Marlow which is even closer) and would happily do a T41 fan swap for a pack of beer if your still struggling? Can re-paste your CPU and have a clean up internally too whilst I'm there. R31 sounds simple as well, but simple as in 'if it's not this t...

My new Thinkpad X201! (ongoing project)

Hi. Via a fairly complicated chain of events I am now the proud owner of 2 more thinkpads for my collection! And this is about one of them, an x201. By far the most modern and possibly fasted Thinkpad I own (in order of speed I have a T40, T43, X60 Tablet, X61, R500 and this!) However, it was a bit ...

Re: My Thinkpad R500

The answer to both your points is I've never used anything better or different! Hence to me the screen is amazing, but I agree that as soon as I experience something better its going to not be as good... The chic let keys are a bit of a pain as I love the older style boards, how they feel, how they ...

Just make sure that you know what's in them before you download and install them...
I usually have a sniff about, KB4493132 has already been hidden (it's the W7 End of Life notifier update, no thanks!)

Battery still fine too!

@beko1987 For a 2019 project/More powerful laptop, why not get a T420 and upgrade it with a Quad i7, 8GB Ram & SSD? T420's have become pretty cheap on ebay. Re: Restoration of a ThinkPad T40 and some questions

I went with a fresh and custom XP install for my T40 over the restore discs. Hacked about for use in 2019 (and it does a fair job, the CPU in mine lets the side down, cannot remember off my head what I fitted though...) and installed a few of the IBM applications. It browses forums perfectly fine, g...

Threads like this that make me glad I get my X60t out every month or so and tun it on, let it discharge a bit then charge it again! It's got a brand new genuine battery I found last Autumn!

Reminds me to do it again soon, W7 had new updates recently!

Re: Thoughts after trying to install Linux on my T41

I've had MX Linux running superbly on my T40 and 43 (well, on the 43 until the mSAta drive encountered issues the last time I tried it...) Didn't do anything special either, just made a Live USB and off it went Caveat? Well it runs better on the T43 than the T40, the generational improvement helps a...

T43 - Thinkfan & MX Linux

Has anyone ever got MX Linux and Thinkfan playing nicely? My T43 runs MX, and it's fantastic (2.13ghz 2gb RAM mSATA-ide hard drive) except the fan is on very fast all the time... Thinkfan is needed! I've just found this, what an amazing project! I'm trying to upgrade my T40 and T43 with a SXGA+ screen, and thanks to this have bought a 99p very ratty T43 with said screen fitted! I was secretly hoping someone would reply soon and go "Ah, I fixed this last year, do X, Y & Z!" The problem I've found is all the threads with solutions are for either earlier versions of Windows 10, which has changed in the recent updates, or for Windows 8.1 etc. part of the problem is, because it...

Do like a nice t4x series! I have a T40 which runs XP SP3. My daughter has a good game of the original Rollercoaster Tycoon running on it and plays with it alot, it handles it just fine, barely spins the fan up unless she zooms right in and it has to show lots of detail. I've got a T43 which is very...
