ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with 65W charger

I'm thinking of getting a dock for my T420 (running Debian 9 Linux), and am likely going to get the Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (4338) because out of all the docks it has an eSATA port, which I use quite a lot on the T420 itself and would find very useful on the dock. Right now I use an aftermarket 65W ...

T420: Linux Driver for Modem (RJ45 Dialup)

I while ago I was thinking that it would be neat to learn more about the specifics of using dial-up modems (I'm too young to have learned how they worked in any detail). In particular, I'm interested in learning more about the Hayes Command Set (AT Commands). My first thought was to dig out my BBC M...

Re: Help! My T420 is breaking keyboards.

Ah! I never thought of the dock. I can get that for considerably less than the keyboard, so I may go down that route (I don't trust myself to not accidentally short something out if I try pin 19). On my previous Dell Laptop you could boot into a sort of checkup firmware, where it ran tests on variou...

Re: Help! My T420 is breaking keyboards.

That's good to know. Before I buy another keyboard, I'd really like to nail down whether the issue is with the keyboard or the motherboard. This is tricky because the power button is on the keyboard. Is there a way to power on the T420 without using the keyboard? Or even a BIOS setting which makes i...

Help! My T420 is breaking keyboards.

So this is a bit of an odd story, but bear with me... Last November I bought a T420. It worked well for the first month but it had a sticky patch on the keyboard where the arrow keys were. In December I decided that the best course of action would be to clean the keyboard, so I removed the five or s...

Two external monitors with a non-Nvidia T420

[Apologies in advance for what is probably a simple question]. I have a T420, and I am reorganizing my work space and one thing I would like to do is get two 1080p monitors running with the T420. From reading various threads, I understand that this will mean that the internal display on the T420 wil...

Re: Quad Core in T420 - Disable Cores to stay within TDP limits?

Thanks very much for the replies. I've tested disabling one core of a dual-core i5 with and then benchmarking with 7z (not on a TP, on a Dell), and it lowers the maximum temperature from 84 degrees C to just less than 70 degrees. From that, I think that disabling cores is a viable - if inefficient -...

Re: Quad Core in T420 - Disable Cores to stay within TDP limits?

I've just realised that the link in my original post didn't work. https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/debian-rhel-centos-redhat-suse-hotplug-cpu/linux-turn-on-off-cpu-core-commands/ That's the website I meant to link to. It describes a method of disabling CPU cores (on Linux - which I use) that appears to...

Quad Core in T420 - Disable Cores to stay within TDP limits?

For a ThinkPad T420 with a quad-core CPU, where the TDP of the CPU (45W) is greater than the maximum supported TDP of the T420 (35W), would disabling two of the cores of the CPU (through this method) bring the CPU back within the 35W maximum? (A pointless question I know, as if you're disabling half...
