Re: Reasons why a computer would display machine language in Windows7?

So am I correct in understanding that this "machine language" is only displayed after Windows boots to the desktop? What about the BIOS? Is the display still corrupt displaying the BIOS? How about when booted from a live DVD or USB operating system?

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

...just enjoy it as is? That has mostly been my experience. There isn't really anything that "needs" to be done. Almost all the changes that can be made are a matter of personal preference anyway. Usually just after a fresh install, I change a few things about the look of the desktop and install my...

Re-seat the cable connection on the back on the LCD panel. Maybe it's a little loose.

My 2core CPU handles my needs just fine. I think I'm an avg guy, so no, I don't need more than a quad core CPU.

Re: Can the T40 screen fit in the T60?

I'm not sure if the pin out is the same or not on each panel. But, I do know that the LCD cable on a T40 determines the panel resolution and on a T60 the resolution is determined by an EDID chip in the panel, not the cable. So at the very least a EDID chip from a T60 LCD would have to be added to th...

Re: How does "AspectRatio" affect ... being a "laptop" ???

Aspect ratio has no affect what-so-ever on where I use a computer. I occasionally use each of mine on my lap, but more often it's on a table, desk, some other furniture or my chest as I'm lying on my back. But, aspect ratio still has no affect on it.

Re: Upgrade bios or not?

While I have upgraded BIOS on several computers, both ThinkPads and others, even un-official modified BIOS, I have never bricked a computer. Still, my policy is, unless there is a benefit from the upgrade that I need, or a problem that an upgrade will fix, I stick with what works no matter how old i...

Not sure about this, but I think if the HDD or optical drive is not properly seated, you'll get that one long beep. Could either be a little loose?

Mint is fine on ThinkPads. I just don't happen to have it installed on one at this time. I do have Mint on a couple of non-ThinkPad machines though.

TrueOS on my X300

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Edit: Just remembered SolydK on the X200

Re: Talk about USPS incompetence and waste

Down here we don't have a local processing center any longer. So, if I want to send a letter to a local post office box, I'll drop the letter in the mail slot inside the post office. From there letter will likely be sent to Little Rock AR, and then from there to Memphis TN for sorting, back to Jones...

Looks like the SSD failed at the same time I merged partitions.
Maybe....but more likely your attempt to merge partitions damaged the partition table. It may be possible to boot a live partition editor and create a new partition table. Might even be able to recover the lost partitions...or not.

Those wires are probably antenna leads for a WWAN card. And, yes they are routed to the (likely empty) miniPCI slot.

FS: LED display parts from T500

What we have here is a badly cracked LCD panel from a T500. It's a LG LP154WX7 panel FRU: 42T0797 with LED back light. Hopefully someone with more skill than I have will be able to salvage the LED unit for use in another panel. Also including the FRU: 42W8080 LED driver card. Looking to get $40 $35 ...

The old 600E looks much better in those super sized pictures that it did under my desk gathering dust. Years ago, it was getting almost daily use, but for the past two or three years, I doubt that it was booted more than a couple of times a year...if that.

While I suppose it would be best for all devices to be patched, including routers, here is what the krackattacks.com web site has to say about the situation: What if there are no security updates for my router? This is all uncharted territory for me, but you may have to go with the 4.14 daily build kernel to get support for such new hardware. http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
