Re: Looking for a devil's advocate: why SHOULDN'T I move to Linux completely ?

I just purchased the Kindle edition of The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction by William E. Schotts, Jr. I can't get the Kindle reader app to run on Wine. I know you'll say "Just use the Kindle Cloud Reader", but my internet service is spotty. So I'm using W7 to read about the Linux CLI. A ...

(Not Devil's Advocate, I know, but...)
Put Linux on your favorite machine, and Windows on your least favorite. Or, put the Windows machine in the garage?

Lenovo duplicates of Windows programs

Is there a list of programs that came with my Lenovo Rescue and Recovery (Win 7 Ult x64) install that duplicate pre-existing Windows programs? I could use more room on my SSD.

Re: X200 or another Lenovo

I am going to completely erase and reformat-any suggestions on how best to do this will be great (I don't need any files from it) For my X200, I bought a set of ISOs to install Win 7 Pro x64 onto my from a forum member for $7.00. I had to burn them to DVDs. Then I purchased an inexpensive external ...

Re: different Xubuntu install

I'll bet you are exactly right! As it happens, though, my aborted attempt to install Xubuntu completely wiped the HDD. This time, as I re-install Win 7, I hope I can leave some room for the Linux. Wondering if I can shrink the Windows partition from within Win 7, or if I will need to do it fr...

different Xubuntu install

I've installed Xubuntu (18.04) plenty of times for dual-booting with Windows 7, and it always detected that OS and presented me with the option of installing Xubuntu alongside Windows. However, using the very same flash drive, this time was different, the computer being an X200 with Win 7 Pro x64. I...

Re: X200 Recovery hangs

Obtained external DVD-drive, burned 32-bit Recovery ISOs. Unfortunately, at the end of the install I got "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware". I found a work-around involving msoobe (Out-of-Box-Experience) and was able to proceed, but then Windows refused to...

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

Xubuntu 18.04 LTS on a T500 and an X200. I got interested in Linux because I wanted an OS with a viable (can't think of a better word) command-line interface. I missed DOS!

Re: X200 Recovery hangs

So if I check for ACHI, then burn the ISOs to DVDs, and spin them in an external DVD drive that connects via USB , it should work?

X200 Recovery hangs

Stops at "preparing hard disk". Generic Win 7 runs fine. Modded BIOS v3.22 and Slic2.1. Need Lenovo install for activation.
Could memory be causing problem? Again, no issues running the Win 7 already on there.

True/False Arrandale questions

Are these statements true?
1. All X201 (non-tablet) ThinkPads run Arrandale cpu's.
2. All X201 (non-tablet) ThinkPads run 1st-gen i5 cpu's.

cloning/imaging unnecessary?

If I back up all my personal files to USB flashdrives weekly with SyncBack Free (W7) and rsync (Xubuntu), and don't mind doing clean installs, do I really need to clone/image my HDD/SSD? Googling this question gives lots of How-To but not much Why.

Re: transfer slic

You're exactly right, I made a typo. Mine is 6FET50WW. So the 6F should work, great!
I'm thinking I should flash the modded BIOS before I try to install W7. Hope there are instructions in the ReadMe file. I seem to remember something about Embedded Controller, whatever that is!

Re: transfer slic

Thanks for the link, RBS. However, that file seems to say it's for BIOS 3.22(6FET92WW)--3.24(7VET94WW).
My BIOS says Version 1.20 (6FET92WW), date 2008-10-30. I have Embedded Controller Version 1.01.
Will the file you pointed me toward give me Slic2.1?

transfer slic

Is there a way to transfer Slic2.1 from my Dell Latitude to my Thinkpad T500? I have purchased Recovery Disks for W7 from a Thinkpadder. The toolkit says my T500 has Slic2.0. Thanks.
