W530 Black Screens on Boot

This is a continuation of the ordeal found in my last thread. Part 2: The Scoop: Ordered what looks like to be a K1000 motherboard with the assurance it works. After receiving it and giving it a look over, it looks to be good. I then swapped it into the case and moved all of the internals over (CMOS...

Are you open to selling the individual parts? I'll buy the mobo for sure, and probably the battery too, if you are.

Edit: Heck, I'll buy the whole thing if you're willing to sell it without the RAM, CPU or SSD.

Re: W530 POSTs Once in a Blue Moon

No go, replacing the BIOS chips made no improvements. I've abandoned trying to repair it.

I've summarized my thoughts in the "Conclusion" section in the OP.

Time for a new motherboard and a vacation.

Re: W530 POSTs Once in a Blue Moon

Update: Received soldering station last night and replaced the BIOS chips this morning. It won't POST, but I get a fan spin up for a couple of seconds now, instead of the dead silence from before.

Will mess around with RAM and CMOS again, then reflow the chips if nothing improves.

Re: IPS display for the older T500 and W500 series

Assuming you buy a non-OEM 16:10 15" IPS display off Aliexpress, what's the relation of difficulty compared to just adapting a T510 display (the whole screen and case)? It's smaller. T500 has a 15.4" display in 16:10, while the T510 has a 15.6" display in 16:9. According to my math, the chassis of ...

Re: W530 - for 280$ worth it ?

Too much modification. I can't risk my main thinkpad because of everyday use. Another thought: is it worth to jump to W541 ? Does ot has good keyboard ? I can sell mine, add some cash and buy w541. If you really like the W530, not really. If you need a better display and your maxed out W530 doesn't...

And now there is this $170 Acer FHD laptop, which comes with a 32GB flash drive: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CM9QMLR?tag=d000001-20&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&ascsubtag=11000_1135093_0 It's funny that for years many of us longed for 14" FHD panels, and now they are everywhere including ultra-budge...

Re: IPS display for the older T500 and W500 series

Was that LG display an IPS display? And what sort of cable mods will have to be made exactly? Forget it, T/W 510/20/30 are 16:9. T/W 500 are 16:10. Even if you'd managed to build a modded cable, a T510 display would never fit in a T500. Assuming you buy a non-OEM 16:10 15" IPS display off Aliexpres...

I have absolutely no idea what you're referring to, but if it's got anything to do with any of the factory-prepped recovery or system partitions on the SSD, those are long long gone now because of the Secure ATA Wipe that I've done (3 of them, actually, over the past 2 weeks or so). But did you do the magic "pay us $10,000 yearly for this arcane knowledge" button press? You'll have to Hold one of: Win+B Win+R Fn+B Fn+R Fn+Esc Win+Esc Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds Release the power button Release the other combination Or something of that sort, IIRC.

Tried to start it up again and got a few POSTs out of it. First time it went to bad checksum (no CMOS battery inserted), second time I got to my HDDs bootloader, and then crashed. Now, no more POSTs are to be found in this hellish landscape. I've gone ahead and ordered another BIOS chip and an extra...

Re: Backlit vs non backlit keyboard, is there a tactile difference?

There's a noticeable difference (although there's more than just "backlit vs non backlit," since there's different manufacturers). I really like the non-backlit keyboard. It feels like a step up from the classic "clown keys" keyboard. The classic keyboard is a joy to type on. There's virtually no tr...

Tried 8GB 2Rx8 PC3L-12800S Hynix RAM, no go in either the W500 or the W530. Looks like it's almost assuredly not a RAM issue. I also tried disconnecting all the non-essential components and trying that: no go. It sounds more and more like a blown BIOS. A previous owner might have wanted to remove th...

Re: W530 POSTs Once in a Blue Moon

Major Update: I was reading a thread about the W500, where someone had mentioned how picky it was with DDR3s. I had to double take, because I always assumed the W500 ran on DDR2s. Well, as it turns out I do have a W500 with two 1Rx8 2GB DDR3 (1.5v) PC3-10080 modules. So I pulled them out to test wit...

Re: W530 POSTs Once in a Blue Moon

OEM CMOS battery measures in at 3.029V DC. The other battery I tried measures at 3.102V.

Reseating gave some good results. The amount of times that powering on leads to a POST has increased.

Still randomly shuts off, but saving and rebooting from BIOS works.
Edit: Or it did the first few times.
