T430 heatsink & fan

I've got three T430 and upgraded one with an i7-3632QM a couple of years ago. The other two have an i5-3320M and an i5-3210M. I'm going to upgrade the i5-3210 to an i7-3632QM. Last time I re-used the existing heatsink/fan, this time I thought I'd replace the heatsink/fan to try and get maximum cooli...

T430 wifi switch

Was in the middle of a post to say help, my wifi doesn't work and then it worked again. I'd physically switched it off (little switch on the right next to the SD card slot) to set up a new router hardwired via an ethernet cable (didn't want wireless - it would pick up my existing router), did my stu...

Re: Micro$haft starts nagging W7-users soon about support-EOL

On a side note, how do you enable USB connections to VirtualBox? As well as the extension pack and membership of vboxusers, you also need to install guest-additions in your guest OS. When this is all done and with the VM running, in the VB devices menu you can select which usb devices to pass throu...

Re: I got my favorite machine back!!

I like them so much, I've got three. One for the other half and two for me. Can't resist tweaking them, maxed out the RAM, HDDs to SSDs, changed i5-3320M to i7-3632QM, upgraded 1366x768 screen to 1600x900 (not lenovo, glossy) and replaced DVD drives with caddies and TB HDDs. Other half is win7, mine...

Re: T430 Win7 - Unexpected boot menu offering System Image Restore

I've never tried using VM/virtualbox and have no idea how that works. I assume I'd need a Win7 disk to run that (I don't have one). You can still download a win7 iso https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 . Looks like you need the product key and (from memory) there are various ...

Re: Check here if your IBM/Lenovo Laptop/Desktop is Linux Certified

Interesting to see that the ThinkPad T430 is actually not on that list
And all versions of mint 17.3 to 19.1 that I've used install 'out of the box' as has been the case with every thinkpad I've got. Not useful!

Re: T430 Win7 - Unexpected boot menu offering System Image Restore

Don't dual boot anymore, when I first got my T430 (one of several) I backed up the HDD, wiped it and installed LM - 18.3 at the time, now 19.0. I run win7 in a VM under virtualbox which is fine unless you are gaming. I don't remember a 13GB recovery partition, system reserved yes. Why don't you just...

I've got two T430's one with a stock 1600x900 screen the other 1366x768. Thought I'd upgrade the 1366x768 to 1600x900 as well. Got a B140RTN02.1 glossy screen (you also have to replace the cable). Took about 1/2 hour. It's so much better than the stock 1600x900 screen from lenovo. Total cost about £...

Re: how much would an upgrade help?

I've got a T430 with 16G RAM and replaced the stock i5-3320M with an i7-3632QM. Yes it does run nicely and does feel a lot quicker than original. Fairly simple mod, trouble will be finding 3632 at a reasonable price. There are very few T430's for sale with an i7.

Re: T430 2351-AJ8 Purchase questions

In the T430 the CPU is socketed. In one of mine I replaced the i5-3320M with an i7-3632QM, a straightforward job. Max temp I've seen is in the mid 80's running handbrake. Bluetooth was an option, some have it some don't - both of mine have it. Also both have the integrated intel graphics. Runs linux...

I'm currently playing with this easy one: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon
Most T series thinkpads run mint 'out of the box'. For my windows needs I run win7 in a VM (virtualbox) - fine for MS office. Also run crossover for MS office.

Re: Fundamental differences between T420 and T430?

Having had both, more than happy with my T430's - have two, neither with discrete graphics. Can't remember what you can do with the T420 but have modded one of my T430's with an i7-3632, maxed the ram and put a HDD in the ultrabay. Spends most of its life sat in a docking station (£10 off ebay) driv...

Got a manual hydraulic log splitter, so much better than using an axe. Think it cost around £150. Downside is that you are continually bending down and standing up.

Re: [solved] T430 boot from mSATA

Found it!! It's not obvious, on the startup menu first item is >boot, looks like a title for what is below, it's not. If it is highlighted, hit return and it takes you into a sub menu that shows the boot order list which you can then change. What is misleading is that when >boot is highlighted there...

Legacy mode, easier than getting linux to boot up under UEFI. Not locked out of BIOS and I've been through every menu and every menu item and can't find anything that gives me the boot order. I'll post a screenshot(s) tomorrow. Too much work to take photos and resize - BIOS contents: Main menu (acro...

[solved] T430 boot from mSATA

Bought a cheap T430 to supplement my main T430 for testing. Came with a 320G HDD so have speeded it up with a 120G mSATA SSD. Installed linux mint onto the mSATA and wiped the HDD (had win7 on it). When I boot it just hangs, the only way I can get it to boot is hitting F12 on start and telling it to...

Re: ThinkPad T410 WIN 7 PRO 64 BIT Recovery Disks Needed.

You have bought a 1.8" SSD haven't you? For some reason Lenovo put a 1.8" SSD/HDD into the T410, a 'standard' 2.5" SSD won't fit. Assuming you have a 1.8" SSD and want to connect it via USB to transfer the OS across then you will need something like: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB3-0-Male-To-Micro-...

I may be wrong, but think the mSATA port is SATA1 whereas for the HDD is SATA3 = much faster. You would be better off replacing the HDD with an SSD.

I began with Corel Linux
Wasn't that Xandros? which is where I started with linux in the early 2000's. I use linux for everything (almost - do have win7 in a VM for those odd sites that insist on IE and for word and excel).

Mint for me. Daily driver is a T430 that I've pimped up (i7-3632, 16G RAM, 500G SSD) running 18.3 cinnamon, a T410 running 17.3 cinnamon and an old T60 running 18.0 mate. Why mint - it installs 'out of the box'.
