Re: What kind of keyboards are on 'modern' Thinkpads?

Yes, I think the old Apple Extended Keyboard used Alps switches, which are prized today. (People are taking apart old keyboards for Alps switches). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Extended_Keyboard And Apple's relatively recent chiclet keyboards are highly rated. But you're right, whenever I do ...

Re: What kind of keyboards are on 'modern' Thinkpads?

Yes, I thought so. Fortunately, I have a mouse when using my external keyboards, so they don't require a trackpoint. Scissor-switch is pretty good. It's quiet, it's consistent, and it can use backlighting. Even though I am using MX-switch mechanical keyboards right now, I wouldn't mind a decent scis...

What kind of keyboards are on 'modern' Thinkpads?

With the renaissance of mechanical keyboards taking place all around us, I was wondering exactly what kind of keyboards modern Thinkpads use. After all, even the new Chiclet-style Thinkpad keyboard is the best available on a notebook, with the retirement of the Classic Keyboard. It's firm, consisten...

Re: T420s/T430s WQHD kits pre-order

This is a really amazing effort, and I'm glad someone stepped up to do it.

I think I read something on the first page about 'X1 Carbon.' Are any of these screens available for my Gen. 1 X1 Carbon?

I have a 1600x900 screen, so any of those would be an improvement.

Re: Review: X1 Carbon Tablet Generation 3 (circa 2018)

Thank-you very much for your comments, everyone. They are very helpful. I am running a Gen. 1 X1 Carbon since 2013 or so. It's a great machine, but I find the screen very limiting. It's definitely not enough for word processing. I wasn't sure if it was the screen size or resolution (1600x900), but i...

Re: Review: X1 Carbon Tablet Generation 3 (circa 2018)

oh, ok. You're referring to the Gen. 4 X1 Carbon [2016]. That's a different model than the X1 Tablet, which is a separate series, but I am interested in that as well. You must be talking about the 1440p screen. 2560x1440. I am interested in that. Can you comfortably view two Word documents side-by-s...

Re: Can a T420 charger power an X1 Carbon?

Right. It's important to note, and I was probably not clear enough in so doing, that I was going to (and have) received my 90w charger back from the airline. I will be using the 90w charger most of the time, when the laptop as at home and on mains. But I hope to use the 45w charger when it is at the...

Re: What mods can be applied to stock T420?

:D Yeah, she's pretty bad. Her machine is an absolute disaster, dirt-wise. My X1 Carbon (2013) is right next to hers right now, and it looks pristine by comparison. I'm going to take a photo of it and show it to you guys later. It looks like it came out of a dumpster. But mechanically, it functions ...

Re: Can a T420 charger power an X1 Carbon?

I'm very interested in portability. If the 45w charger lets me use it abroad, that's great. I had the option to buy the slim 65w, but it was literally twice the price, and twice as long to ship. If insurance covers my 45w purchase, I might also purchase a 65w slim charger to test the difference. I d...

Re: What mods can be applied to stock T420?

Here are the parts I think I should buy (sans model numbers): -4-12 GB of additional RAM, either a 4 GB stick for the second RAM slot, or replace it all with 2x 8GB -1600x900 stock Lenovo screen, or one of the 1080p+ mods. -new keyboard, because they're probably not that expensive and it needs to be...

Re: What mods can be applied to stock T420?

Thanks for these details. This is all incredibly helpful. Based on your advice, I've decided to restore and refurbish this T420 as best as possible. My sister isn't keen on ordering too many parts, but I will stealthily buy some. Is there a place in Sydney, Australia that can operate on this? Some o...

Re: Review: X1 Carbon Tablet Generation 3 (circa 2018)

Hi SurrealMustard, The latest iteration of the X1 Carbon Tablet came out around July, if I am not mistaken. That is said to be the 3rd generation (2018). https://www.neowin.net/news/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-tablet-review-its-way-better-than-a-surface-pro/ Is there a newer version than that? I have not hea...

Re: Review: X1 Carbon Tablet Generation 3 (circa 2018)

This is fascinating. I have been drawn to the X1 Tablet (Gen. 3) for the same reasons: I need screen vertical height and a decent keyboard, along with HiDPI.

Could you let us know how you got on with it? Can you use the X1 Tablet for actual productivity tasks? How is the glossy screen?

Re: Can a T420 charger power an X1 Carbon?

I guess we'll find out. It ordered the 45W because it was literally half the price, and it ships in 2 business days instead of 6-9.

I won't be charging the laptop when I am mobile. I only need it it suffice as mains power to operate the machine.

Re: Can a T420 charger power an X1 Carbon?

Thank you for your help. That is very reassuring. I am also thinking about the replacement charger. My 90w will arrive when they find the luggage, but I need to purchase a charger for the present. Lenovo also offers a 45w charger here in Australia. Inexpensive and very light. Would it be safe to pur...

Re: Can a T420 charger power an X1 Carbon?

Now, that's interesting. From internet research, I gather that the X1 Carbon gen. 1 is almost unique in coming with a 90w charger. It is distinct from the T models of that era, which allegedly shipped with 65w chargers. The Carbon only had the 90w charger for fast-charging purposes, and it was dropp...

What mods can be applied to stock T420?

Hi, I'm currently using my sister's T420, which got her through medical school, and she is a doctor now. She is being tempted by Dell and Apple to 'upgrade' to the XPS 13 or Macbook Pro. However, all of her stuff (and I mean a LOT of stuff - medical videos, journals, logins, hospital portals, etc......

Can a T420 charger power an X1 Carbon?

Hi Everyone, I own an X1 Carbon (Gen. 1). It's the model from 2012-2013. Recently, an airline lost my charger. I am typing this message from my sister's T420. My question is: Can I use the T420's charger with the X1 Carbon? I know that the tips are different, but I think I can plug my X1 Carbon's ti...
