On the contrary, it provides very pertinent information for somebody who has made the same mistake as you.

And it also reminds us, when we make a silly mistake, that we are not alone. Far from it.

Re: Warning: advise against disassembling the the Series 3 docks

Well done. A tip from wooden boat building. When you have to glue something, build up the glue around the joint so as to greatly increase the amount of glue in contact with the parts you are gluing. if it's strong glue, like epoxy, you will have a much stronger repair. Of course, it's best if the re...

Re: T30 USB stick boot possible? How to?

Life is strange. Having had no luck finding an X3 Ultrabase I simply searched for Ultrabase, and found a man selling seven of them. With a DVD unit. Manufacturer refurbished, apparently, whatever that means. Seems a bit unlikely. Now to sell the Series 3 Ultrabase that I purchased in error thinking ...

Re: T30 USB stick boot possible? How to?

Sadly, it seems that it is not so easy to buy an X3 Ultrabase, at least in the UK . There hasn't been one for sale on Ebay UK for a long time - none is shown in completed listings, so I wonder if it was even sold in this market. Those for sale in the USA are reasonably priced - until you see the pos...

Re: People I could strangle...regarding HDD covers

Thanks, but so far I can't see what I am after on either of these. It's interesting that for the T61, Lenovo sells (or used to sell) a screw pack (P/N 44C4809), but it excludes the cover screw. And people selling packs of screws never (in my experience) include cover screws. On page 63 of the T61 14...

Re: People I could strangle...regarding HDD covers

I mainly have T42 and T61 models. The 14" versions of both have the same screw - a stubby little thing probably 3mm or 4, with a wide head which has a slot going right across and a smaller slot at right angles which doesn't go right across the head. On the 15.4" T61 the screw head is smaller. My 15....

People I could strangle...regarding HDD covers

There are two categories: 1 Those who remove a hard drive from the computer and then throw away the caddy, cover, and screw. 2 Those who sell covers, caddies and screws, but supply the wrong screw or no screw at all for the cover. Of course, IBM/Lenovo are also to blame for using a non-standard and ...

Re: What OS to Choose

I use and love Xenialpup64 on most of my Thinkpads. There is a very supportive Puppy Linux community, and you will find Xenial sings on a T61. The default interface is a bit weird, but it's easily changed. The Puppy package manger makes it easy to download software, though depending on your needs yo...

Re: T30 USB stick boot possible? How to?

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I have the same problem, albeit on an X30, which I imagine is not very different from a T30. I have tried to boot Linux from a USB stick and got nowhere, despite doing exactly what AEN007 says. The USB stick works happily in other, slightly later, Thinkp...

Re: T510 Why so many refurbished on market

I use Linux on my older machines. Much lighter and quicker than Windows, and much less virus-prone.

Also, LibreOffice works well on Linux now, so for general computing Linux offers a better, faster, and safer experience than Windows.

Re: T42 music problem

Probably a stupid question but did you turn up the volume in ALSA? Thank you for that suggestion. I had never turned the volume down in ALSA, but I thought I would give it a try. So I unplugged the T61 and plugged in the T42. The first thing I did then was to press the "test sound" button, and was ...

T42 music problem

I play music from my Thinkpad through a DAC into the HiFi system. Recently I swapped the T61 for a T42, and until yesterday, everything worked fine. Now, silence reigns. There is nothing wrong with the external system because if I plug the DAC back into the T61 it works fine. The USB port in the T42...

Well, I think you are missing something. It is very easy to use, very configurable, and able to run virtually any Linux software. But it's ALSO good for checking out non-working Windows machines. Just boot it with a USB disk and sort out your problems. That's assuming the PC will actually boot of co...

Re: Looking up to equip my Thinkpad desk setup - mouse&KB suggestions needed

OK, understood. I am not a gamer, so not an issue for me. But a separate keyboard, on a TP? Heresy! I do miss not having a numeric keypad with my TPs, but a small standalone item works quite well. If you want to do any kind of gaming on a Thinkpad, you must have an external keyboard. In terms of key...

Re: Looking up to equip my Thinkpad desk setup - mouse&KB suggestions needed

A mouse is of course almost essential and I have cordless mice by Logitech and MS which both work fine despite being cheap. But a separate keyboard, on a TP? Heresy! I do miss not having a numeric keypad with my TPs, but a small standalone item works quite well. My main work-space consists of a W530...

If anyone is interested in trying Haiku, it is best to use one of the "nightlies" rather than the official Beta. The nightlies are the latest version, and since the OS is undergoing active development the Beta can now be considered to be obsolete. So far I have only been successful with running it o...

Windows never does (IME), but recently I have been installing a temperature gauge (Coretemp) on my Windows mac...

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been in touch with Tuus, in connection with an earlier dud T61P which I had acquired. I cloned my HDD before reading this, but have had no problems - so far! Others in the same position might find the following useful: https://www.disk-partition.com/windows-10/ssd-optimization-windows-10-4348.html IME, cloning from a HDD to SSD is a bad idea regardless of the OS involved. YMMV.
