Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

I think people are more conscious of temperature now than they used to be. I try to use Linux as much as possible, and my preferred flavour tends to include a temperature gauge as standard. Windows never does (IME), but recently I have been installing a temperature gauge (Coretemp) on my Windows mac...

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

Well, that's encouraging. Thanks. I can see this machine getting the full treatment - in due course. I will report back when it's done. Well, the number was said to be signifficant - but this may be due to high volume of those machines sold to big companies. It may be that it was the likes of 3% ove...

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

I have had a few other issues which have stolen my time recently, so until I catch up the T61P is sitting waiting exploratory surgery. But the Arctic paste is in the drawer, and in a few days I hope to get stuck in. Back in the day, it was said, perhaps on the Lenovo site, that only a small, though ...

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been in touch with Tuus, in connection with an earlier dud T61P which I had acquired. He can supply a board, and the price is not unreasonable, but given that this machine is working now I don't think there is much point in replacing the existing board unless and un...

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

That sounds like a good idea. I shall investigate further. Thanks. Since you have a T61p, I would strongly suggst you flash Highsun's BIOS as you can undervolt the FX 570M, lowering temperature drastically and increasing the longevity of your system, in addition to boosting battery life. I would sta...

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

Having played around with the machine for a bit, I am definitely going to keep it. It has the best screen of all my TPs, and I can't bear to part with it. Install Middleton's BIOS, re-paste the CPU or preferably swap it for T8300/9300. SSD comes next and you'll have something to truly enjoy for a f...

You are forgiven. Let's move on. The rudeness level here is quite high too. Not everybody in this world knows everything, and not everybody has studied electronics. The only way to increase one's knowledge is to ask questions, and hope for polite and helpful replies. Sometimes it's a forlorn hope. I...

It's very kind of you to apologise on Wujstefan's behalf, and I am sure he is delighted that you have saved him the trouble. I understand that you would naturally expect a polite answer, but that isn't always the case unfortunately. Re: Thinkpad T61 hard drive upgrade

I cloned my HDD before reading this, but have had no problems - so far! Others in the same position might find the following useful: https://www.disk-partition.com/windows-10/ssd-optimization-windows-10-4348.html IME, cloning from a HDD to SSD is a bad idea regardless of the OS involved. YMMV.

Re: Known T61p failures?

15.4" T61p 08/07 build date still running fine 10.5 years later. I've owned it for about 2 of those years, immediately undervolted both the CPU and GPU. Never had a problem, temps are completely sane and safe. If you under-volt an electric motor, it will draw more current and over-heat. How a circu...

Re: What is a brand new T61P worth?

Thank you for your comments. I have been doing more research into this machine, which included taking a look at the disk drive, which also appears brand new, but is dated Jan 2015. I have also been looking for signs of wear to support the suggestion that the machine is "by no means brand new, but we...

What is a brand new T61P worth?

Just bought a used T61P on UK Ebay for a reasonable price, and to my astonishment it appears to be absolutely brand new. There isn't a mark on it apart from a very small scratch on the lid, not deep, which might have been made while taking it out of the box. Although the hinges themselves are fixed ...

Re: i have hit jackpot with a second t430

Well done. It's odd how Ebay advertisers seldom mention screen resolution, even when it would pay them handsomely to do so. I paid good money on Amazon for a refurbed T430 in excellent condition, and was delighted when an almost new machine arrived with a 1600x900 as an unexpected bonus. A 14" T430 ...

Re: how much would an upgrade help?

Personally, I would sell the T410 and buy a W530 with a quad core I7 and 1 8Gb stick of of RAM. Then install an SSD, and put the HDD in the ultradrive slot. The result will knock your socks off, and have lots of upgrade potential (to 32Gb) if the RAM isn't sufficient. It's what I did recently, comin...

Re: Anyone still collecting ThinkPads?

I'm sort of collecting Thinkpads, mainly T42 and T61 models in various guises. It started when my old Lenovo cheapo died last year and I decided to buy a decent modern laptop. That took the form of a six year old refurbed T430, which was and is brilliant. Having started, I began buying any cheap T42...

Re: What Disk Imaging Program Do You Use in the Windows 10 Era?

I had never cloned a hard disk until last week, and downloaded Macrium Reflect with some trepidation. The whole process needed about three clicks of the mouse and then I went for a short walk. When I returned it was all over and the new SSD booted first time and is very fast. I couldn't believe how ...

Re: I got my favorite machine back!!

My first Thinkpad was a T430, just a few months ago. Superb machine - I was hooked immediately. It's since been largely superseded by a W530 and joined by various flavours of T61 and T42. Latest is an X30 in full working order. The challenge now is to think of uses for as many of them as possible. C...

Re: T42 - Fantastic Price in 2018

Interestingly, here in the UK at least, T42 Thinkpads have almost entirely disappeared from Ebay. So it is not impossible that prices may start rising, though not perhaps to the optimistic level of the machine referred to.

Re: Best HDD configuration for W530

More RAM slows booting? Interesting. Any ideas why it should? I would have thought that if anything it would speed it up, or else make no difference. Presently I have old machines running W95, Win 7, and Vista, and all are quicker than the much more powerful T430 and W530 with Win 10. But when I hav...

Re: Best HDD configuration for W530

I have been trawling the net for hours to find whether there is any observable difference in practice. A number of people say that any difference wouldn't be noticeable, or would be only barely noticeable, but I haven't found anybody to say that they have tried both. I have two T61s in daily use, an...

Coming back on this, I acquired a hard drive caddy for the DVD/CD space, but have now acquired a newish 1TB drive from a defunct Apple MacBook. After a full format it seems to work fine. So that will go in the caddy. Looking again at the mSATA drives, it appears that an 860 Evo 500GB is not much mor...

How do I know if my W530 is RAID-enabled?

There is currently only one disk in it, so it's not using RAID ATM.

And on the subject of RAID, would it work to run RAID on two disks of the same capacity but different speeds? Conventional SATA and mSATA.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Best HDD configuration for W530

Of course, there may not be large stocks of unsold mSATA drives, in which case prices won't fall. mSATA wasn't ever really TOO popular so the chance of having large stocks in a warehouse is small. There are cheap chinese mSATA drives that you could use instead. if it wasn't too popular then it is p...

However, if in the next year or two there are more mSATAs around than there is demand for them, the prices will fall considerably. At that stage, I will probably bite. Nope! Re: Best HDD configuration for W530

I would like to go the mSATA route, but mSATA drives cost much more than normal SDDs and it seems are slower. If I needed to fully max out the storage I suppose mSATA would be necessary, but as it is I think I will go for the cheaper, perhaps faster, and less expensive route of a caddy and a normal ...
