Re: Win7, 8.1, or 10 for new nvidia 570 frankenpad?
The Haiku developers have just released a second Beta. This operating system is getting better and better. If you want to try it out, you'll need a USB stick and a way to write the ISO to it. Balena Etcher works well. Best way to test it is to dedicate an old machine to it. Then you can simply creat...

Re: Any good newer thinkpads? Time to replace my T530
Although the lid has a lens for a webcam, there is no sign that a cam is even fitted (ie nothing is Device Manager to say it exists or isn't working . From memory, people say that the wires are too short and become detached. Because I have a working cam on another computer I have not bothered to tro...

Re: Any good newer thinkpads? Time to replace my T530
I have a W530, which is magnificent. However, it's not hugely different from the T530, and most people (including myself) would be quite happy with either. It works with 8 gigs of RAM, but 16 would be better, and I have just acquired two 8 gig modules from Ebay. Mine has a good cpu and a decent SSD ...

It would not cost you very much if you were to sell the 14 inch and buy a 15 inch. That's what I would do in your situation. And just to encourage you, I have to say that the 1920 x 1200 screen on my T61P is superb.

Re: Thinking of upgrading...
I tend to agree with Wujstefan about keyboards, but as my first TP was a T430 I am of course biased in the opposite direction from the majority on here. Nonetheless, I love my T61 machines (wide 14" and 15"), and use them a lot. The keyboards are slightly different from my X230/T430/W530/T540P, but ...

Re: W701 thermal putty question
I have often wondered whether a small copper plate with thermal paste top and bottom would do a better job than thermal putty. The plate would have to be thick enough to fill the space. I see in the W701 Hardware Maintenance Manual that "thermal putty" is used between the fan assembly and the video ...

Thanks. I have seen a few more sellers saying the same. The first seller I saw quoted 30 pin, hence my question. Thank you. I am glad I asked before buying! T540P versus W530 Any thoughts?
My main machine is a W530, but I have recently acquired a slightly lower specc'd T540P for a decent price. It has an i5 rather than an i7 chip, and a low-res screen, but but both can easily be upgraded. Aside from lower max RAM, which isn't an issue, and the awful clunkpad (also not an issue as I us...

I have Win10 running on four T61 machines (which I will be selling). They do get a bit warm, but otherwise they work fine. I also have Haiku running on a T61P. It needs a bit of work still, but it's what a PC operating system ought to be. And Puppy Linux on another T61 (Xenialpup64). If you are incl...

Rather a late reply....
Glad you got it working.
You should be able to resell the second T440P for a lot more than you paid for it. Probably you have already done so.

Re: T-61 Reinstall Vista...
It's not clear whether AC12 tried to install Win10 and ran into driver problems, or was worried he would have problems, so didn't try it. Since somebody else did the installation on my machines, I don't know whether there were problems or not. All I can say is that Win10 works fine. If you plan to s...

Re: T-61 Reinstall Vista...
I acquired four T61 machines with SSDs in them, running Win10. No issues at all, and quite quick enough to run MS Office. They don't have fast CPUs, and nor do they have huge amounts of RAM, so not ideal for heavy surfing perhaps. But for word processing or spreadsheets or normal business tasks they...

Re: Worth upgrading the T430
Your T430 has a rather basic screen, and this is a rather more tricky item to upgrade. So if you are doing things like video editing I would rather swap to a machine with a better screen, preferably 15", or buy an external monitor - and then upgrade the processor, etc. The fact is that a T430 with a...

Re: T430 Touchpad or similiar available on newer machines?
There's no accounting for taste. A T430 was my first Thinkpad, so it is the standard by which I judge others. I find the keyboard (the much-maligned Chiclet) to be fine, though I prefer the look of the older TP keyboards. Perhaps if I had started with an older machine, I would like the T430 keyboard...

From what I can see, you'd still need to cut off some mounting eyelets and the inverter. See also here: https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=785950#p785950 If you had done a search on the forum first, you'd have found Sharp LQ154M1LW2A or LQ154M1LW02 screens. Dell screen for a T61
I have an upgraded T61 with Middleton BIOS, a T9500, and a nice 1680x1050 screen. it's an excellent machine which I don't want to part with (or not yet) but it has one flaw. The screen is quite dim - too dim to use comfortably in daylight. At night it's fine. I have been pondering whether to replace...

On the contrary, it provides very pertinent information for somebody who has made the same mistake as you.
And it also reminds us, when we make a silly mistake, that we are not alone. Far from it.

Re: Warning: advise against disassembling the the Series 3 docks
Well done. A tip from wooden boat building. When you have to glue something, build up the glue around the joint so as to greatly increase the amount of glue in contact with the parts you are gluing. if it's strong glue, like epoxy, you will have a much stronger repair. Of course, it's best if the re...

Life is strange. Having had no luck finding an X3 Ultrabase I simply searched for Ultrabase, and found a man selling seven of them. With a DVD unit. Manufacturer refurbished, apparently, whatever that means. Seems a bit unlikely. Now to sell the Series 3 Ultrabase that I purchased in error thinking ...

Sadly, it seems that it is not so easy to buy an X3 Ultrabase, at least in the UK . There hasn't been one for sale on Ebay UK for a long time - none is shown in completed listings, so I wonder if it was even sold in this market. Those for sale in the USA are reasonably priced - until you see the pos...

Re: People I could strangle...regarding HDD covers
Thanks, but so far I can't see what I am after on either of these. It's interesting that for the T61, Lenovo sells (or used to sell) a screw pack (P/N 44C4809), but it excludes the cover screw. And people selling packs of screws never (in my experience) include cover screws. On page 63 of the T61 14...

Re: People I could strangle...regarding HDD covers
I mainly have T42 and T61 models. The 14" versions of both have the same screw - a stubby little thing probably 3mm or 4, with a wide head which has a slot going right across and a smaller slot at right angles which doesn't go right across the head. On the 15.4" T61 the screw head is smaller. My 15....

People I could strangle...regarding HDD covers
There are two categories: 1 Those who remove a hard drive from the computer and then throw away the caddy, cover, and screw. 2 Those who sell covers, caddies and screws, but supply the wrong screw or no screw at all for the cover. Of course, IBM/Lenovo are also to blame for using a non-standard and ...

I use and love Xenialpup64 on most of my Thinkpads. There is a very supportive Puppy Linux community, and you will find Xenial sings on a T61. The default interface is a bit weird, but it's easily changed. The Puppy package manger makes it easy to download software, though depending on your needs yo...

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I have the same problem, albeit on an X30, which I imagine is not very different from a T30. I have tried to boot Linux from a USB stick and got nowhere, despite doing exactly what AEN007 says. The USB stick works happily in other, slightly later, Thinkp...
