Re: Choosing the right SSD to install in the WWAN slot (X230, X240, and T480)
Progress.....! I have sourced a Western Digital SN520 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD and successfully installed it into the WWAN slot in the T480. I already have a Kingston SKC600 mSATA 256GB which should go into the X230. And I found a Transcend M.2 2242 SATA 256GB SSD for sale online which ought to arrive in ...

Re: Choosing the right SSD to install in the WWAN slot (X230, X240, and T480)
Thanks @axur-delmeria, that helps a great deal. I think I'll skip the idea of using an adapter, or modifying/resoldering pin-connections. Such things add complication, and as you point out, don't always work. So I'm going to focus on finding SSDs with the right spec, such as those you have suggested...

Choosing the right SSD to install in the WWAN slot (X230, X240, and T480)
For years I have been a devotee of the T-series, mainly a trusty and solid T430, which was succeeded by the T430s which I am currently using. On each I installed a 256GB SSD in the WWAN slot, because I like to have a dual-boot arrangement, So I retain Windows and its Boot Manager on the original or ...

Re: T480 - black screen when powered on
A quick update.... mainly to say that my earlier reply to @axur-delmeria was perhaps misleading. I went looking for the Lenovo Diagnostics "Smartbeep" app, and found that it would install on my mobile phone. So I figured it was worth a try. I powered up the faulty T480, and sure enough, black screen...

Re: T480 - black screen when powered on
Thanks, RBS, for that reassurance about disconnecting the internal battery. To answer your other questions, No and No. Looking at the screen from any angle reveals no glimmer of any kind of image. I haven't (yet) tried an external monitor as the only one I have is an ancient Dell item which is burie...

Re: T480 - black screen when powered on
Thanks @axur-delmeria .... I had seen a mention of this somewhere else, but wasn't clear if it was still available. Sadly, having just checked, it seems that the app is only available on phones running Android 13 or newer. Just as I continue to rely on old(er) Thinkpads, my phone is also not the lat...

T480 - black screen when powered on
I have just taken delivery of a refurbished T480. When I press the power on button, it lights (as does a little light in the Esc key), but the screen remains totally black. Not even a blinking cursor. Further (longer) presses on the power button sometimes result in its light blinking slowly on and o...

Re: T430 - how can I use ExpressCard slot?
Thanks @axur-delmeria, that helps to clarify things a bit. Just to add to the information, my enquiry was prompted in part by seeing this YouTube video https://youtu.be/cfi-GSLijG8?si=XopTKPqwDMlHzwex. I wasn't looking to try the NVME option, which seemed to be a step further (and perhaps more of a ...

Re: T430 - how can I use ExpressCard slot?
Have you considered replacing the CD/DVD with an SSD caddy and SSD drive? Ah, you must be clairvoyant! Yes, been there, done that ... and it is an easy and convenient modification. But right now the caddy is on the shelf, the SSD is in another laptop, and I have reinstated the original CD/DVD drive...

T430 - how can I use ExpressCard slot?
I have an T430 which I use as a spare/backup laptop. I notice it has an "Expresscard" slot (filled by a dummy plastic tray). I cannot recall ever using an Expresscard - indeed I'm not entirely sure what they look like or can do, and I understand they are more-or-less obsolete. However.... I'm just w...

Well, a belated update which - I hope - brings this little story to a close. And I owe big thanks to @axurdelmeria, to @RealBlackStuff, and to @kfzhu1229 for all their wise advice. It turned out that the problem, the explanation, and the solution - were all fairly simple. Back in November I had to f...

Re: ThinkPad T430 - white screen on boot-up

I haven't yet opened the laptop casing up and removed keyboard etc to make the first check - ie the cable connecti...

Re: ThinkPad T430 - white screen on boot-up
Thanks, kfzhu1229 , for that very practical advice. I haven't yet embarked on the disassembly and checking of the faulty screen (that's the task for the weekend) - but the cable will be the first thing I check, and the reminder about unplugging the charger and battery is very wise. Just a couple of ...

Re: ThinkPad T430 - white screen on boot-up
The Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) can be found via the HMM link at the top of each Forum page. Start checking the LCD-cable. It is a good idea though to make a backup of your data-drive. Also, you should be able to transfer all your drives (main, Ultrabay and WWAN) into a T430s and continue the...

Re: X230 - what SSD will best fit in the WWAN slot?
Thanks again, axur-delmeria - I can see exactly the caddy/adapter that's needed, and I'm getting one as soon as possible. And although the deep-dive by dr_st into the merits of X220 and T430S is more detail than i could have imagined, it does confirm what seems to be the agreed view in this thread -...

Re: X230 - what SSD will best fit in the WWAN slot?
I favor the T430s plan. There's an "ultrabase series 3" available for X230, it plugs into X230's dock port, that grants a cd drive slot in the same slim 9.5mm size as t430s. With t430s you'll only "need" to get the drive adapter. Thanks, TPFanatic. Useful to know about the ultrabase series 3. I've ...

Re: X230 - what SSD will best fit in the WWAN slot?
OK, here's my best effort at answering the question without trying to copy and paste from terminal commands or to post screengrab images. The T430 has three drives: sda is the original factory-fitted 240GB SSD. It has Windows 10 installed. It has 3 NTFS partitions ( sda1 System Reserved, sda2 Win10,...

Thanks again axur-delmeria - great to have your expert advice (you can tell that I need a bit of hand-holding!) Re: X230 - what SSD will best fit in the WWAN slot?
Thanks for that... I have found a note on my files that suggests the mSATA SSD I installed in my T430 (I haven't yet opened the laptop up to look) is a Kingston SKC600MS256G. The specs and images on the Kingston website suggest it has a single key-slot in the connector, and two screw-holes at the ot...

X230 - what SSD will best fit in the WWAN slot?
My trusty T430 has just failed (and I have posted separately about this in the T430 sub-forum). Might take some time to repair. Looks as if I will have to check and maybe replace the screen and/or its cable. Meanwhile I need to bring an alternative/replacement laptop into action. I have a "spare" x2...

Re: ThinkPad T430 - white screen on boot-up
Thank you, axur-delmeria , that is really useful information. In terms of transferring one - or more - of the actual drives in the faulty ...

ThinkPad T430 - white screen on boot-up
This is the first time I have encountered such a problem and I have no idea whether it is software or hardware related ... and as explained below, I can't easily provide the basic system info to help with troubleshooting. I have a Lenovo T430 laptop which until today has been totally reliable. The "...

More questions about cleaning up an SSD to get rid of Comuputrace.... As part of my gearing up for the "nuclear option" of wiping my 120GB SSD, I thought I would take a look at exactly what was currently on it (since Win10 Pro is installed on the drive). In particular, I was curious about the Host P...

Thanks @RBS both for the advice on a caddy for the CD/DVD bay, and for the link to that thread discussing mSATA cards. The caddy from a supplier in the US seems quite a bit more expensive than the numerous ones offered on that well-known auction site (which are no doubt mostly made in China - but th...

T430s - can I replace WWAN card with mSATA SSD?
I have just acquired an ex-corporate Thinkpad T430s. As well as the usual WLAN card for wifi-connectivity, it has an Ericsson WWAN card which appears to be "half-size", mounted using a sort of bracket or caddy in what looks like an mSATA (PCie?) space beside the RAM. I don't need a WWAN (which I ass...
